A year of transition2014-15 was a year of transition due mostnotably to the retirement of our Consultant DrBarbara Downes. In many ways Dr Downeswas one of the founders of everything thatBolton Hospice stands for: a person centred, compassionate, professional, collaborative, and innovative provider of specialist careand support.

We also completed phase one of our Buildingfor the Future project, expanding our bednumbers and opening our multi-faith prayerand reflection room which now has male andfemale ablution rooms.

Giles House is now fully operational and ourwork in partnership with NHS Bolton ClinicalCommissioning Group, Bolton PeopleAffected by Cancer and Macmillan CancerSupport to open a Macmillan CancerInformation and Support Service hasprogressed significantly, helping us transitiontowards offering a wider range of services.

Looking forward we know there are manychallenges ahead, not least the need toensure that we are financially secure and thatour income is as sustainable as possible in aworld that remains in the grip of austeritymeasures.

Bolton Hospice is proud to be able tocontribute so much to the health careeconomy of Bolton and to work in partnershipwith NHS Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group,Royal Bolton Hospital and Bolton Council inpursuit of our mission to provide the very bestspecialist palliative and end of life care.

None of which would be possible without thesupport of the people of Bolton who sogenerously give of their time and donationsto help make all that we do possible, and forthis we, the patients we care for and theirloved ones say thank you.

Judith Bromley Dr (h.c.) Leigh Vallance(Chairman) (Chief Executive)

What people say about Bolton Hospice

Thank you for your sensitivity during whatwas a very difficult time. The hospice is alovely peaceful environment, but it is you- staff and volunteers - who make it sucha special place.

When our daughter Janine was in thehospice, the care, love and compassionfrom the staff helped Janine and us tocome to terms with what was happening.Janine felt secure at the hospicebecause the truth was always told, theyknew how she was feeling and how tocomfort her.

The hospice were fantastic with Nigel. They treated him like a king - with totaldignity and respect. When he was at thehospice, they let us have a party for hisbirthday and all the staff were terrific withhim.

You hear the word hospice… and fear isa normal reaction but I can say without adoubt any fear you may have hadabout Bolton Hospice will be dispelledthe second you walk through their doors.Love, respect, compassion and empathyradiate.

You are a beautiful & calming place forpatients and relatives going throughdifficult times. The hospice took unbelievable care of

me, there were times when I wanted togive up but a natter with the staff mademe think differently.

My Grandpa was unsure about goingthere but he really enjoys his weekly visitsand we know everyone looks after himreally well. My mother had a few extra wonderful

days all thanks to you. She helped somany people in her life, and your supportat the end of her life was priceless.

The work you do is extremely difficult anddemanding, but you all remain cheerfuland compassionate throughout.

The hospice staff don’t just treat thepatient, they treat the whole familywhich is why we always support themand try to give back a bit of the careand love they gave to us all.

Volunteering is definitely so worthwhileand rewarding that anyone evenconsidering it, should take up theopportunity. You feel so appreciated bythe patients and their families.

The Light up a Life service was lovely, moving and uplifting, an oasis of calmwithin a busy town that allowed time toremember.
