Operatic escapismInspired by the folk story The Little Mermaid, Scottish Opera’s latest production offers the chance to lose yourself in the imaginative world of Rusalka, a water nymph who longs to be human so she can win the love of the Prince. The witch, Ježibaba, grants her wish with conditions: Rusalka cannot use her voice, and she will be

cursed for eternity if her Prince does not remain true. Soon, she has everything she’s ever dreamed of, until a foreign princess starts to turn the prince’s head… Dvorák’s romantic score, folk-inspired melodies and a standout cast make this a night of epic escapism. Do you know your Arne Jacobsen from your Aarnio or Aalto? A new book by Elizabeth Wilhide demystifies the design classics worth investing in

WHEN it comes to design classics there’s no arguing that the Scandinavians have it nailed.

Concerned with function and practicality, ‘Scandinavian modern’ has an enduring appeal, says author Elizabeth Wilhide in her new book Scandinavian Home, but what sets it apart is an undefinable special quality or X-factor.

“If you had to put a name to that special quality you might call it ‘approachability’,” she says. “Many great modern designs are wonderful to look at. They occupy interiors like spatial markers or pieces of sculpture. Arne Jacobsen’s ‘Egg’ chair works well as a spatial or sculptural marker, too. The difference is you would find it very hard to resist sitting in it. It asks you to sit in it.

“These are designs that invite interaction, that draw people in. They often show a perfectly judged balance between the human capacity to abstract and nature’s living vitality. They are quietly functional but memorably beautiful too.

“Many Scandinavian designs have remained in continuous production, while originals command high prices in auction rooms all over the world. Fifty, sixty years later and they still have an irresistible sense of freshness and vitality.” EG

ARNE JACOBSENDANISH ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER (1902—71)

Legendary perfectionist Arne Jacobsen won numerous prestigious awards and was an ardent botanist who delighted in living organic forms. With the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (1960) Jacobsen’s reputation as a leading architect and designer was sealed. Every interior detail was designed by Jacobsen, from lighting to textiles, ashtrays to cutlery. The result is a remarkable unity of organic forms and functional integrity.

<<< EGG CHAIR (1958)Manufacturer: Fritz Hansen

Designed for the lobby and reception areas of the SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen, the ‘Egg’ chair is an icon of Danish design and has never been out of production. Egg Chair by Fritz Hansen, £4,283, www.skandium.com

^^^ SWAN CHAIR (1958)Manufacturer: Fritz Hansen

The ‘Swan’ chair was designed at the same time as the ‘Egg’. Like the Egg, the Swan chair is an essay in curves. Its organic form, with uplifted arms or wings, is even more suggestive of the bird after which it is named when a number of chairs are gathered together. Swan Chair by Fritz Hansen, £2,669, www.skandium.com

decodedEERO AARNIOFINNISH INTERIOR AND INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER (1932—)During the early 1960s the use of plastic in furniture design was revolutionary. Aarnio’s ‘Ball’ chair (1963) and ‘Bubble’ chair (1968) came to epitomise the Swinging Sixties and the futuristic space-age aesthetic, so much so that they appeared in many photo shoots and science fiction films. They are still in production today.

>>> BALL CHAIR (1963)Manufacturer: Originally Asko, now produced by Adelta

The ‘Ball’ chair came about when Aarnio was living in his first married home and lacked a ‘big chair’. Aarnio’s own ‘Ball’ chair has a telephone inside it; others have installed speakers. The softened acoustic and the sense of enclosure generate a unique seating experience. Ball Chair from £6,470, www.couchpotatocompany.com

^^^ BUBBLE CHAIR (1968)Manufacturer: Originally Asko, now Adelta

After the success of the Ball chair, Aarnio wanted to make a transparent version out of acrylic which led to the Bubble. However, he could not find a visually pleasing way of making a clear pedestal, which is why the chair is designed to be suspended from the ceiling. Bubble Chair from £4,050, www.couchpotatocompany.com

ALVAR AALTOFINNISH ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER (1898—1976)

The striking scrolled design of the Paimio Chair, produced initially for the Paimio Sanatorium in the early 1930s, won Aalto international recognition. Sales were good, too, a factor that prompted Alvar and his Finnish architect and designer wife, Aino, to found their own manufacturing company, Artek, in 1935.

>>> PAIMIO CHAIR, MODEL NO. 41 (1931—32)Manufacturer: Artek

An experiment with bentwood techniques, the chair is elegant, comfortable and easy to mass produce. The single undulating piece of laminated ply that forms the back and seat is hung from a solid birch bentwood frame. The form is particularly dramatic in silhouette, where it seems to dematerialise into a series of fluid lines. This marriage of modernity’s clarity and simplicity with organic form and natural materials that made Aalto’s work so popular and influential. Chair 41 Paimio by Artek, £2,494, www.skandium.com

POUL HENNINGSENDANISH ARCHITECT, AND LIGHTING

AND FURNITURE DESIGNER (1894—1967)From the age of 18, Henningsen was inspired by how badly the

then-new electrical lightbulb was being used and wanted to recreate the soft gas-lit interiors of his youth using electrical

light sources. All of Henningsen’s lighting designs were the product of intensive research

into the diffusion of light. The ‘PH’ series went on to become a

huge critical and popular success, both in Scandinavia and internationally.

^^^ PH5 (1958)Manufacturer: Louis Poulsen

A Danish design classic, and one that remains incredibly popular to this day, the PH 5 pendant is designed to hang

low over a table. It is completely glare-free. PH5 Pendant Light by Louis Poulsen,

£432, www.skandium.com

^^^ PH ARTICHOKE LIGHT (1958)Manufacturer: Louis Poulsen

Originally conceived for Langelinie Pavilion, a restaurant in Copenhagen (where the lights are still hanging today), the ‘Artichoke’ is a completely glare-free pendant light designed so that it is impossible to see the light source from any direction. Intended to

be displayed in larger interiors, the pendant has great presence; it is also heavy and is consequently suspended

by steel cable. PH Artichoke Pendant Light by Louis Poulsen, £4900, www.skandium.com

^^^ PANTON CHAIR (1960)Manufacturer: Vitra for Herman

Miller; reissued 1990

The Panton chair’s back, seat and base is one single

continuous form and has come into its own in the last couple of decades with advances in

plastics technology. Shaped to fit the human form like a glove,

the sexy curves and glossy finish recall automotive design.

A new version, scaled to suit children, has

recently been issued. Panton Chair by Vitra, £207,

VERNER PANTONDANISH ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER (1926—98)

Something of an enfant terrible, Panton was described by fellow Danish designer Poul Henningsen as “stubborn and forever

young”. He pursued a space-age aesthetic in brash new synthetics and today, his work is more

successful and popular than ever before. “The main purpose of my work is to

provoke people into using their imagination.”

Vernon Panton

^^^ CONE CHAIR (1958)Manufacturer: Originally Plus-Linje;

now produced by Vitra

One of Panton’s early radical designs, the ‘Cone’ chair caused an international sensation. The form recalls an ice-cream

cornet and the reference is typical of Panton’s Pop-inspired aesthetic. The chair was originally designed for his first major commission to redesign the Komigen Inn.

His theatrical all-red interior created a sensation, as did his Cone chair, which was

later put into production by Plus-Linje. Heart Shape Cone Chair by Vitra, £2,416,

A new botanical treatment from the

Balmoral Spa promises hedonistic heaven

WORDS EMMA LEASK

addictSpa NEVER do things by halves, my

grandmother once said, so at her bidding, it’s high time for a little ‘me’ time. What

better place than the expansive surrounds of another grand old lady, The Balmoral, to sample the spa’s latest treatment, ‘Head in Heaven’.

The SpaIn the spirit of doing things properly, first job is to robe up and relax. Bypassing the gym, weights room and exercise studio feels liberating. A swim in the warm 15-metre pool ticked off, it’s time to get down to the serious business of lounging around. Sashaying from the eucalyptus-infused Turkish steam room to the Finnish sauna for a therapeutic blast of dry heat, does the constitution wonders. An hour was passed idly flicking through magazines in the candle-lit, womb-like relaxation room — an escapist’s sanctuary. The bustle of Princes Street couldn’t have felt further away.

Now, it wouldn’t do to let dear old granny down, so in the interests of going the whole hog it seemed only right to sample the light lunch in the spa’s poolside dining area. Healthy options include quinoa and goji berry salads. The more substantial char-grilled sea bass with steamed dill potatoes was tasty and, duty bound to comply with granny’s wishes, I switched the fresh fruit platter in favour of the dark chocolate delice, a devilishly delice-ious dessert.

The TreatmentHead in Heaven begins with some yoga breathing exercises and gentle prayer-like poses. It’s the latest treatment dreamed up by Speizia Organics, a botanical skincare range hand-made in Cornwall from herbs, flowers and oils, that promises to nourish your body inside

and out. According to Dr Spiezia (whose name reminds me of Dr Spock), it guides the body into ‘parasympathetic perfection’ which, for those without a PhD in neuroscience, loosely translates into feeling semi-comatose.

Admittedly, the light touch took a bit of getting used to, but the jojoba oil back, neck and scalp massage melted away any tension. The slow, rhythmic Tui Na Chinese massage techniques are said to induce a hypnotic state of relaxation; I nodded off.

A rose petal facial scrub buffed away dull winter skin, while a sage toner pressed on with

hot mitts soothed the sinuses. Lastly, a heady rose and vanilla face oil

was patted on with a final slick of coconut lip oil for a plumped pout. (I was too sleepy by then to notice the effect).

The Best PartThe slow hypnotic massage

achieved a state of cult-like calm that lasted ages. Well, until the chaos of

school pick-up anyway.

The ResultMy shoulders were no longer up at my ears and I left in a floaty state of ‘enlightenment’ ready to preach the Dr Spiezia message at the school gates. Fully indoctrinated, I’m returning for another session next week. Grandmother would approve.

What It CostsSpiezia Head in Heaven, 90 minutes, £110. Includes full spa access.

A YE, aye, draw close round the fire and I’ll tell ye a tale. Once upon a time, around 240 years ago, a grand George Street townhouse was home

to a famous lady novelist. Sixty years later, it was home to a distant-relative-of-a-fellow who founded a famous Edinburgh publishing house, well, according to thon clever marketing man, anyway.

Along came reputable restaurateur Des McDonald and chef Colin Fleming with a dream to create a new eatery in George Street. They espied said townhouse, latched onto the loose literary theme and so The Printing Press was born.

Their master plan was to wow the townsfolk like no other eatery had done before. People would come dressed in all their finery to taste the tantalising food, marvel at the interiors and speak of its culinary wonders. Writers would travel from afar to review it because writing folk like things like tatty almanacs and dusty old typewriters on the walls. Ambience, they call it.

And so The Printing Press opened its doors a few months ago with a flourish, or as much as ye can manage with a revolving door, anyway. On opening night it served up fancy food to Edinburgh’s literary glitterati of the underworld; Ian Rankin, Chris Brookmyre and Lin Anderson — y’know, the kind of pairty people who walk the streets preoccupied with murder.

Not long after, an Edinburgh writer and her travelling companion, a magazine publisher no less, happened along George Street one dreich night. A flash of lightening illuminated

the Printing Press sign, and they staggered in after a bit of hard-earned indulgence and maybe a wee nip o’ something bubbly, just to help the creativity flow, y’understand.

A charming German manager by the name of Fritz, or something, clapped his hands and a row of waiters carrying silver platters appeared, along with a cask of fizz. The kind of golden, pure prosecco that leads a lowly writer to get a bit carried away with onesel’, lose a bit o’ self-control, like. Getting above their station, going all Catherine Cookson.

As their wet clothes steamed in the warmth, plate upon plate piled with sizzling hot food was carried out from the kitchens, they’d never seen the like of before. Hot smoked salmon with pickled fennel and horseradish potato scone, scallops hand-collected by some poor lad braving icy waters just hours earlier, then smeared in a garlic and parsley butter, fit for the Gods. Fancy choices included the finest Scottish quail eggs, and roast wood pigeon smothered in hazelnut crowdie. They feasted on chicken with

crunchy black treacle bacon and an 80z sirloin steak straight from the sizzling Josper grill. The truffle chips had the kind of wicked flavour an honest yokel would swap his wife for.

And, lo the desserts! Was the feast to end with a tussle over the marmalade steamed pudding or heather honey burnt cream? Rumour had it, that one poor soul lost his mind to the chocolate caramel pot, the seductive mix of salty caramel crunchiness and chocolate shavings said to be the work o’ the de’il, and was found wandering Carlton Hill in the early hours, half demented.

On and on the writer and publisher made merry, in a bid to abate The Deadline Fever. (The kind of folk that sit on and on until the lights and heating are switched off, and the staff have their coats on).

Eventually, they were sent on their way with full bellies and a jolly skip in their step, newly inspired to spread the word. The Printing Press flourished and the guid townsfolk of Auld Reekie never suffered from culinary inertia ever again.

What it costsA la carte: starters from £3.50, mains from £12, desserts from £5.

OpenSeven days for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

My Sweet Kitchen by Linda Lomelino, published by Roost Books, available Autumn, £16.99, www.roostbooks.com

Sponge Cake with Fresh Berries and

Mascarpone

recipe

T HE mascarpone in the filling lends a fresh taste and a smooth, firm consistency that makes it

easy to stack this cake sky-high. Leave the sides of the layer cake unfrosted as shown, or slather the entire cake with frosting; it’s equally delicious both ways. Linda Lomelino, My Sweet Kitchen

SPONGE CAKE 1¼ cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powderPinch of salt14 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature¾ cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, or ¼ teaspoon vanilla powder 3 eggs, at room temperature1 tablespoon + 2 teaspoons milk, at room temperature

MASCARPONE FROSTING9 ounces mascarpone2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar¾ cup whipping cream9 ounces mixed fresh berries, for garnishConfectioners’ sugar, for garnish

By Linda Lomelino (Serves 6-8 slices)MAKING THE SPONGE CAKE1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter two 6-inch cake pans. Cut out two circles of parchment paper to fit into the bottom of the pans and lay in each pan. Dust flour around the sides of the pan.2. Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.3. In a large bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and vanilla until light and creamy, about 5 minutes. 4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.5. Sift the dry ingredients over the butter mixture and fold in with a spatula until the batter is smooth and even.6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake in the centre of the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted

into the centre comes out with moist crumbs. Let the layers cool in the pans for a little while and then turn out onto wire cooling racks to cool completely. Remove the parchment paper from the layers.

MAKING THE MASCARPONE FROSTINGBeat the mascarpone and confectioners’ sugar in a medium bowl until creamy. Slowly add the cream and beat until the frosting is a spreadable consistency.

ASSEMBLING THE CAKEPlace one of the cake layers on a cake plate. Spread with a thick layer of frosting then add some fresh berries. Add the other cake layer and spread frosting on top. Decorate with more berries and dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Known as the ‘new magnolia’, grey has become a dominant trend in modern interiors. A new book by Kate Watson-Smyth

shows us how to pull off this elegant neutralFiftyShadesT

HERE’S no doubt about it, grey is the shade of the moment. Restaurants, shops and homes are coated in it. There’s not an interior

decorating programme that doesn’t use it. And never mind 50 shades — the human eye can, it’s been claimed, detect more than 500. As can the average paint chart.

And if you thought the whole grey thing was about to be over, I refer you to global paint giant Dulux, who have just expanded their range of greys and now offer 557 in total.

“Everyone wants to paint their houses grey at the moment,” says Karen Haller, a colour expert who teaches industry professionals the science of applied colour psychology, “but it’s one of the most difficult shades to get right because of the colours that lie beneath.” Kate Watson-Smyth, Shades of Grey

All photographs taken from Shades of Grey, by Kate Watson-Smyth, published by Ryland Peters & Small

Grey is never grey... “Context is everything; you never see grey in isolation. There will always be other colours around it from furniture, paintings, or a person’s possessions, so it will always change in different environments.” Simon March, founder of Colour Makes People Happy

Natural materialNot all grey is paint; this bathroom is covered in salvaged fossil limestone, providing texture as well as colour.

What goes with grey?Well, that’s an easy one. Everything. As long as your base notes don’t jar, you can pair grey up with almost anything, from neons to pastels and brights. Pale grey walls work with a variety of different treatments.

Some paint companies suggest teaming them with white woodwork for a fresh, crisp look. Or use the same paint colour on the woodwork; this is known as the gallery effect and makes spaces look larger. Do the ceilings as well to increase the sense of height.

When it comes to accent colours, bold shades look really dramatic against a soft grey, while muted pastels will make for a restful space.

Charcoal grey looks good with everything from neon orange to soft blush pink and even bitter chocolate. You can throw in some metallics — copper, brass or pewter all have a particular affinity for darker greys — and vibrant patterns, or keep it very monochrome by layering up shades of white, black and grey for a restful, understated Nordic feel.

“Grey is the perfect springboard,” says Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, whose bestselling paint is a slate grey called Clooney (yes, after George).

“You can add flamingo pink or yellow, pistachio or lavender. It will last for ever — just change the shades around it and the accessories as often as you like.”

Welcome to the richest place on earthWORDS: EMMA LEASK

DOHA24 hours in...IT’S been said that Doha is the richest

place on earth thanks to its vast oil and gas reserves. Gearing up to host the World Cup in 2022, it’s a dynamic city of

wealth, glitz and a constantly changing skyline, with vast skyscrapers, gigantic shopping malls and landmark museums springing up almost overnight. Set to give Dubai a run for its money, Doha is a city with a mantra of bigger is definitely better.

Where to shop and eatVillaggio Mall is a must-see. Venetian-styled ‘streets’ with canal and gondola rides are housed under a dome painted sky-blue with moving clouds. Perhaps it was the jet lag, or the white ‘daylight’ lighting, but the effect was surprisingly realistic. It’s gigantic; with an average of 50,000 visitors a day and an entire wing (15,000 square metres) dedicated to luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Christian Dior. There’s fast food to fine dining, 13 cinemas, the Gondolania Theme Park with Ferris wheel, carousel and bowling, plus an Olympic-sized skating rink. For authentic Arab shops and cafes try Souq Waqif.

Where to stayMODERN LUXURY: Just 30 minutes from the airport, Hilton Doha (right) is a family-friendly luxury hotel with a children’s pool, playground and private beach. The palatial rooms overlook the commercial hub of the city and the Arabian Gulf. World-class Eforea spa has a hydropool while beachfront Trader Vics (one of six in-house restaurants) is known for its Asian-Polynesian fusion fare and live Cuban bands. Awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award, the service is exceptional; our daughter became ill and a bespoke early dinner was set up in our room complete with white tablecloths. The breakfast buffet is superb, which we enjoyed in a

balmy 22 degrees on the outdoor terrace. Doubles from £145, www.hilton.com

AUTHENTIC STYLE: Traditionalists will love the authentic décor (think marble pillars, heavy oak doors and courtyard rooms) at Sharq Village & Spa (above). Frequented by celebrities, the spa is notably good, and reminiscent of a souq with narrow ‘streets’ and treatment rooms in small sand-coloured ‘houses’. Masseurs are expertly trained, the Thai massage among the best I’ve had. Cabana-lined pools, Ritz Kid’s club, attentive staff and a 15-minute drive from the airport makes this ideal for families. Doubles from £255, including breakfast, www.ritzcarlton.com

What to doStroll along waterfront promenade the Corniche and visit The Pearl (thepearlqatar.com), the infamous artificial island in the Gulf, packed with high-end shops, cafes and beach clubs. Katara Cultural Village (www.katara.net) is an open-air arts complex with concerts, theatres and galleries.

Star escapes

Fancy a little stardust with your next holiday? Stay at a celebrity-owned escape and you could be breakfasting with Richard Branson or doing yoga with Hugh Jackman

WORDS EMMA LEASK

NECKER ISLANDRichard Branson

Necker Island, Sir Richard Branson’s private island paradise — and permanent home — is known as a bit of a party pad. Located in the British Virgin Islands, it’s all about barefoot luxury in a Balinese-style setting with flamingos and giant tortoises wandering around.

Luxuries include a candlelit dinner with bonfire on the beach, a floating sushi bar in the beach pool and a laid-back atmosphere where guests help themselves to the bar.

Star-studded visitors include Nelson Mandela, Kate Winslet and Kate Moss who hired Necker exclusively for her 40th birthday party. Branson is often found barefoot, chatting with guests at the bar.

Prices from £54,600 per night for up to 34 guests (equating to £1,605 per person per night). To share the island costs £8,642 per couple for three nights all inclusive, during certain ‘Celebration Weeks’ when this is possible. www.virginlimitededition.com/en/necker-island

PALAZZO MARGHERITAFrancis Ford Coppola

Owned by legendary film director Francis Ford Coppola, the Palazzo Margherita is a slice of authentic Italian indulgence. This charming boutique hotel dates back to the 19th century, offering nine lavish suites, tranquil courtyards, gardens and a pool.

Francis has renovated the entire hotel

(think original marble floors and hand painted fresco ceilings) — it’s luxe enough to make every guest feel like a star. Just a short stroll from charming hilltop town, Bernalda, in the largely undiscovered Basilicata region, there are white sandy beaches just 10 minutes away.

Prices from £305 per night including breakfast, wifi and a complimentary pasta making lesson, www.thefamilycoppolaresorts.com.

GWINGANNAHugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra Lee-Furness were so impressed with Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat when they visited that they became co-owners. Just half an hour from Brisbane airport, the 160-acre Gold Coast spa escape stands on a plateau with ocean and valley views.

Offering tai chi, meditation, yoga and organic cooking classes, this healthy retreat has no televisions

or newspapers and specialises in ‘life overhauls’. Accommodation ranges from heritage houses to orchard suites; there’s also a gym, infinity pool and three new meditation suites (33 treatment rooms in total). The X-men star is a regular visitor between filming schedules; if the meditation doesn’t re-energise you, the chance of lying on a pool lounger next to half-naked Hugh may do the trick.

Weekend stays start from £486 per person (including meals, activities and a massage), www.gwinganna.com.

COSTA D’ESTE BEACH RESPORT & SPAThe Estefans

Dreamed up by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, oceanfront spa resort Costa d’Este reflects the couple’s Miami-inspired personal taste. Set alongside miles of Florida’s Vero Beach golden sands (the area is known as ‘the Hamptons of Miami’), the vibe is relaxed, with beachfront dining (organic Peruvian) at The Wave Kitchen & Bar.

Activities include paddle boarding, kayaking and snorkeling, alternatively guests can do a few laps of the oceanfront infinity pool or hang out at the Beachside Cabana Bar. The spa has a secret entrance for A-listers.

Doubles from £150 per night, www.costadeste.com.

The go-anywhere sports planeForget a Ferrari, Californian-based Icon Aircraft has come up with the world’s first light sports plane —

hailed to be changing the face of aviation. Deemed the new rich boy’s toy, the next step up from an all-terrain vehicle and power boat, the stylish two-seat A5 has fold-away wings and can fit in your garage.

It’s accessible; it doesn’t require a full pilot’s licence or extensive training. It’s also fuss-free — at a lightweight 686kg, its short take-off distance means there’s no need for airports or runways. With the

ability to take off and land on land and water, you could tow it to your local loch and go flying.

A 100-horsepower engine gives it a maximum speed of 109mph, a range of over 550km and it comes with a built-in safety parachute. A triumph of design, form and advanced aeronautical engineering,

it can take off from a dirt track or secluded beach allowing easy access to remote locations. Marketed as a personal aeroplane that puts freedom and fun into flying, the sky’s the limit.

Icon’s A5 plane is available to pre-order at $189,000 (equating to £134,000), www.iconaircraft.com
