(1 Star – Poor; 2 Stars – Fair; 3 Stars – Good; 4 Stars – Very Good; 5 Stars – Excellent!)

Book Title: The Lost Hero Author: Rick RiordanReviewer: Man (Grade 7) Book Rating:Summary: “The girl is Venus Spawn,” the lady Cyclops snarled. “She’s using charmspeak onyou! Rarr!” The lady Cyclops grabbed piperround the waist. “Don’t try your pretty talk

n me, girl!” After reading the book, I now wonder bout… “what the next book is going to beike.”

One thing I learned from this book is…Never put yourself and others down. Peoplere different on the inside than the outside.”would recommend this book to anyone

who… “likes fairytales & dragons. My cousinwould like this book because he loves dragons.”

Book Title: Keys to the Demon Prison Author: Brandon MullReviewer: Lacey W. Ryder (Age 15) Book Rating:Summary: “This is the fifth and final book inhe FABLEHAVEN series. Finally, the sphinxas all the artifacts, enabling him to open the

Demon Prison, which has been closed forenturies. The only ones who could stop him

would be Kendra, Seth, and the Knights of Dawn, as well as some dragons, the fairies, and

unicorn. It is complicated and confusing asveryone chooses sides, and the good guys try o prevent the evil that would overcome the

world if Zzyxx was opened.”After reading the book, I now wonder

bout… “nothing.”f I could change one thing about the book it

would be… “that not so many great characters

would die.”

The thing I liked the most about the book was… “everything!”I would recommend this book to anyone

who… “liked the past books of the series, andenjoys reading about fantasy, adventure, andmagic.”

Book Title: Secrets of Droon: Mask of Maliban Author: Tony AbbottReviewer: Jason Rittenberg (Age 16) Book Rating:Summary: “It’s a really great book becausegood triumphs over evil. Sparr, a monster, hasreturned and Eric, a boy, found out that he hadmagic. Julie had magic boots that helped her

Book Title: Riot Author: Walter Dean MeyersReviewer: Rheeannon Bourget (Age 14) Book Rating:Summary: “The book is about a young mulatton the beginning/middle of civil war in New

York, where riots are breaking out. The poorrish do not want to get paid 300 bucks to goight and possibly die for the rich man. Clair isrish/Black, her mother is Irish and her fathers black. When people see her they consider hervery tanned white, however she now seeserself as a light-skinned black. The story evolves around how people hate other peopleust because of their skin color. That Claire wasinding herself in the midst of all the hate andespair. She became a woman just from being alf black in New York at the time of riots.”

After reading the book, I now wonder about… “how mulattos feel towards themselves andow much hate the white people had towardslack people. The book made me wonder why ad people hated black people just becausehey’re different.”

One thing I learned from the book was…racism is the cruelest thing. That youhouldn’t judge people because of something hey cannot change. That you should really geto know something before you judge them”

The thing I liked the most about the book was… “that after what everybody did to hernd her people, she didn’t hate anyone. She

wanted to, but just couldn’t find it in her hearto really hate them like they hated her.”

One thing I would change about this book s… “that instead of writing it like a movie, I

would have just written it. I wouldn’t have putn all of the separate actions and peoplealking. It didn’t seem like a book to me, moreikely a fairly okay screenplay.”would recommend this book to anyone

who… “enjoys historical fiction and settingshat take place in the civil war, but tell battleshat didn’t take place on the battle field.”

Book Title: The Westing Game Author: Ellen RaskinReviewer: Michaela Batstone (Librarian)Book Rating:Summary: “This book was very inventive anda fun mystery. It is about sixteen people whoare invited to the reading of Samuel Westing’s

will. They could become millionaires, depending on how they play Westing’s tricky game, which involves burglaries, blizzards, and

bombings!”One thing I learned from this book is… “thnot everyone is who they appear to be, andsometimes it is the unlikeliest characters who

become the villains, heroes, and most loved. Also, many people would strike up wonderfulfriendships if only they’d see past the exteriorsof others.”The thing I liked the most about the book

was… “the mystery and intrigue! You neverknow what’s going to happen next, and with allthe twists you are kept guessing until the very last page.”

After reading the book, I now wonder about… “other mystery books! I haven’t readmany mysteries, but this was so fun, I mighthave to start picking more up.”

If I could change one thing about the book I would be… “how confusing it was at times. Icouldn’t always follow the thought processes of the characters and understand how they werecoming to certain conclusions. It would havealso been nice if Raskin had stated theconclusions of some of the twists, rather thanimply them, like that Crow loved Angela somuch because she reminded her of her deaddaughter.”I would recommend this book to… “anyone

who likes suspense, mystery, and figuring outpuzzles. I bet you can’t guess who themurderer is!”
