Isol was born in Buenos Aires, in 1972. She studied Fine and Composite Arts

-ics, poetry and visual arts. Currently, she is entirely dedicated to media and book illustration. Her work has been published with great success in Spain, Mexico, France and Argen-tina. Her books have been translated to several languages such as French, Arabic, English, Norwegian, Swedish, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Ital-ian, Greek, and German.

Francisco Hinojosa (Mexico City, 1954) is one of Mexico’s leading authors of children literature. Soon after com-pleting his literature studies he began writing poetry, before turning his hand to short stories and novels for children. In 1984 he won the IBBY Prize for his book La vieja que comía gente (The Old Lady who Ate People),

with FCE. In 2015 he was selected by Mexico’s Council of Culture (Conac-ulta) as the ambassador for the Chil-dren and Young Adults’ International Book Fair (FILIJ) to represent and promote children and young adults’ literature in Mexico.

In a simple and playful way, Juan Ge-dovius suggests a bidirectional story which can be read from left to right, or vice versa. Juan Gedovius is a self-taught writer,

musician and illustrator. His work has

appeared in magazines, posters, bro-

he has become well-known for his chil-

dren’s book illustrations. In 1997, FCE

Teresa Castelló Yturbide is one of the

dition and to materialize it into writ-

ing. Alongside her literary work, she

conducted several research projects,

mainly about traditional craftsman-

David Daniel Álvarez studied design

in the National Institute of Fine Arts.

His studies in plastic arts took him to

already received several international

awards; for example, he was selected

for the Bienal de ilustrarte in 2012 in

Lisbon, and won the Fifth International

1970. He is a writer and teacher. He

won the Latin American Short Story

Award “Benemérito de América” and

the San Luis Potosí National Short Sto-

ry Prize granted by Mexico’s National

Institute of Fine Arts and Literature. He

is regarded as one of the most impor-

tant authors of his generation.

and Spain. He was part of IBBY Honour

list in 2014 and won the 20th Catalogue

also produced numerous essays, such

as El laberinto de la soledad, El arco y la lira and In/mediaciones. Octavio Paz re-

ceived several awards and distinctions:

the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize (1957), the

Cervantes Award (1981) and the Nobel

Prize in Literature (1990). He died in

1998.

Gabriel Pacheco is an established

Mexican illustrator whose work has ap-

peared in many books, catalogues and

other publications. He has won several

national and international competi-

tions, and his illustrations have already

become a reference point for young art-

ists. For FCE he has published La bruja y el espantapájaros and Hago de voz un cuerpo.

Traditional Mexican Short Stories

After conducting far-reaching eth-nographic and linguistic research of the most representative and popular Mexican oral stories, Fabio Morábito has compiled 125 folk tales from dif-ferent regions of Mexico. These sto-ries bear the hallmark of Morábito’s literary and translation training, and his experience as a short-story writ-er, giving them a literary quality for everyone to appreciate, but mainly stands out the labour as a transla-tor to rewrite this tales from the oral tradition, giving them linguistic and stylistic unity. Some of the short sto-ries in this anthology have been rec-reated by well-established Mexican illustrators.

Fabio Morábito’s nely wrought prose

characters, and he is considered one of

the most important contemporary writ-

1961. Among her published books are

Amantes (2001), Snowhite (2001), Co-menoches (2004), and The Pet Shop Rev-olution (2010). In 2010 she was award-

ed the National Illustration Prize. She

has illustrated famous children’s books

such as J. Winter’s Frida (2003), The

Brothers Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, and

He won the Hispanic American Prize of

Cecilia Rébora was born in Guadalajara

in 1973. She is a Mexican illustrator; she

has produced graphics and illustrations

at several museums. Many of her illus-

trations have been selected for the 10th,

11th, 13th, and 14th Children and Young

Adults’ Books Illustrators Catalogue of

CONACULTA. As an illustrator she has

worked for CIDCLI, Alfaguara, SM, Pla-

neta and FCE.

Anaclara’s Mirrors

Mercedes Calvo was born in Salto, Uru-

guay. Her work especially focuses in the

development of poetic language, a sub-

ject on which she has collaborated with

articles in journals of educational up-

date. Since childhood she has been an

assiduous reader of poetry, and in 2006

she decided to fully venture into writing

poetry for children.

Fernando Vilela is a Brazilian artist,

writer, illustrator and art teacher. He

works with engraving, painting and

photography and has participated in

important exhibitions in Brazil, Belgium,

France, United States and Mexico. In

2004 he received the Revelation Illustra-

tor Prize awarded by the FNLIJ. He was

awarded with the Jabuti Prize for Litera-

ture in 2006 and the next year he was

included in the White Ravens Catalogue.

in 1971. He is a poet and essayist, and

Translation GrantsPROTRAD 2016 ANNOUNCEMENTTo promote and spread awareness of Mexican culture internationally and to foster

cultural exchange, the government of Mexico, through the Secretariat of Foreign

Affairs (SRE) and the Secretariat of Culture, through the National Fund for Culture

and the Arts (Fonca), and the State Publications Office (DGP), in conjunction with

the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), through the Coordinator’s

Office of Cultural Outreach, and with the National Chamber of the Publishing

Industry (Caniem) and the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), invite:

Foreign Publishers: to submit comprehensive projects that provide for the

translation and publication in a foreign language of works by Mexican authors.

PARTICIPATION CATEGORIES• Category A: funding of up to US$ 15,000.00 will be offered for translation and

publication projects of specialized books in humanities, literature and chil-

dren and young adult’s literature to be completed in a period not to exceed

twelve months.

• Category B: funding from US$ 15,000.00 to 25,000.00 will be offered for the

translation and publication of art books to be completed in a period not to

exceed twelve months.

• Category C: funding from US$ 30,000.00 to 50,000.00 will be offered for the

translation and publication of a series of at least three specialized books in the

following disciplines: arts, humanities, literature and children and young adult’s

literature, to be completed in a period not to exceed twenty-four months.

• Subcategory D: funding will be offered for publishers in English that propose

translation and publication projects in any of the above-mentioned categories.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS1. Confirm the legal existence of the publisher.

2. Submit a comprehensive proposal to translate and publish one or more works

dealing with literature, the humanities, or the arts, based on the above-men-

tioned categories.

3. Register online by filling out the application and uploading the necessary files

at the Fonca website by the stipulated deadlines.

Fondo de Cultura Económica—or simply, Fondo—is a Mexican publishing house

and cultural organization founded in 1934. Over the years, it has enriched the

Spanish language with its distinguished catalogue and has published definitive

translations of works that have shaped universal literature.

Fondo, which is partially funded by the Mexican government, was originally

entrusted with the translation of classic works of Western literature, as well as

publications in the fields of humanities, social sciences and particularly econom-

ics. The Department of Children and young adult’s literature was created in 1991,

with the conviction that an effective way to educate readers is to publish books

that capture the imagination of children, by having a strong narrative, a positive

aesthetic value, along with a careful dedication to the construction of the plot,

characters, time and space in which the story takes place.

This has been our mission for over 25 years, since we published the first title of

our pioneering collection of children’s literature “A la Orilla del Viento”.

The Children and young adult’s catalogue features works by leading Mexican

authors, such as Francisco Hinojosa, Juan Villoro, Vivian Mansour, Antonio

Malpica, Martha Riva Palacio, among others.

It also includes Spanish translations of the most prominent writers from

around the world, such as Satoshi Kitamura, Oliver Jeffers, Anthony Browne,

Cornelia Funke, to name a few authors.

As a publishing house, Fondo has received awards such as the Príncipe de

Asturias Communication and Humanities Award (1989).

Now, more than 80 years after its founding, Fondo is engaged in a comprehen-

sive process of modernization to reaffirm its status as a leading cultural institution

in order to attract today’s readers through its network of bookstores and branch-

es, as it moves towards establishing its position in the digital ecosystem.
