PRESIDENTS REPORT
Season 2015/ 2016 was a season of consolidation for
the Box Hill Cricket Club. Nonetheless there were
many positives and I believe a firm platform has
been established from which the club can progress.
Thanks must go to all our sponsors and match day
ball sponsors. We thank them for their valuable
contribution.
To all members who have served on the committee
thank you for your help. Special thanks go to our
retiring committee members - Penelope Cleghorn,
Peter Robinson, Andrew Davidson and Greg
Davidson who have given great service to BHCC
over many years and will be sorely missed.
The club awarded three Life Memberships this year
and Sam Morris, Nicole Breschkin and Marg Pretty
are congratulated on being very worthy recipients of
this honour.
Undoubtedly the crowning moment of the season
was the Premiership win by our Cricket Victoria
Premier Firsts Women who beat Melbourne in an
extremely close and highly skilled game of cricket
which was telecast online in its entirety for the first
time. This was their third successive premiership
and congratulations go to all of the team members,
supporters and supports staff.
To their coach Alan Carter our hearty
congratulations and we thank him for his years of
hard work and dedication not only the Women’s
section of the club but to BHCC as a whole.
The Men’s section were represented in the finals by
our Second and Third elevens who were very
capably led by Michael Vozzo and Tim Reid
respectively. Michael and Tim’s efforts in mentoring
younger more in-experienced players were a joy to
behold. The Men’s section are to be commended on
their youth policy and blooding new players which I
am sure will stand us in good stead for the coming
seasons.
An exciting addition to our Junior program this
season was our inaugural Under 18 side who
competed in the ECA Friday night competition on
turf. This allowed the Juniors coming through to
Senior ranks to get further exposure to playing on
turf wickets. My thanks go to Ross Collins, Junior
co-ordinator, and all the parents and coaches who
undertook roles in our Junior program this season.
It must be remembered as a club we face challenges
but we do have some unique opportunities. The loss
of the VSDCA grant has presented financial
challenges. However the club has been very
fortunate to secure the services of Ben Wood who
has volunteered to fill the role as our sponsorship
coordinator. To date there have been some
significant amounts pledged to the BHCC a great
result upon which we are looking to build.
Ben has also worked hard in developing our veterans
section and we are hopeful of entering two BHCC
veterans teams in the forthcoming season.
The club has also worked very hard in the post
season to recruit players to the club. To date we
have been successful in obtaining the services of
James Pearson, son of past player, Life member and
Past President of our cricket club, Rick Pearson.
Justin Lampard has also committed to the club and
we look forward to enjoying some very successful
cricket outcomes with these two new recruits and our
very skilled cricket leadership team in Paul Gloury
and Michael Vozzo.
Once again thank you to all those members who have
worked extremely hard in ensuring BHCC is a viable
exciting family club in the forthcoming season.
Andrew Minter.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
City of Whitehorse
The Box Hill Cricket Club is indebted to the
City of Whitehorse, its Councillors and the staff
of the Recreation Services Department. We
would specifically like to acknowledge the work
of the CEO, Noelene Duff, Bill Morrison and his
staff, Kendall Sinclair and Steven Alderton.
We would like to thank the work of the staff of
Parkswide, including manager Nigel Brown and
turf supervisor Mark Doyle. The quality of the
new centre square area should stand the club in
good stead for the coming seasons.
Cricket Victoria
Box Hill CC also acknowledges the support of
Cricket Victoria through grants and dividends
and through their support of the Women’s
Premier Cricket and Women’s Community
Cricket Competitions. Particular thanks go to
Erini Gianakopolous who works diligently in her
role administering the Women’s competitions,
Emma Gallagher for her development role with
the Community Cricket competition and Mike
Ronchi as Premier Cricket Strategy Manager.
Thanks also to both the Women’s Premier and
Women’s Community Cricket Panels for their
volunteer work.
Victorian Sub-District Association (VSDCA)
Thank you to the Executive Committee of the
VSDCA led by President, Jack Sheehan and
Executive Chairman Phil O’Meara. We would
like to acknowledge the work of Secretary, Ken
Hilton, and all the other Officer Bearers in their
various roles.
Eastern Cricket Association
Our thanks go to the Eastern Cricket Association
for the way they run their Junior program and
the volunteers that fulfil the roles to get our
youngest members on the park in a quality
competition. We would also like to thank
Sharon Lynas, for her administration of the girls
competition, the Anna Lanning Shield, which
provides a pathway for girls into cricket.
Country Week (VCCL)
Box Hill hosted one match during the first week
of February 2016 between Warrnambool and
Sale-Maffra. The match was played in excellent
conditions and the participants enjoyed the
facilities at Box Hill City Oval. Thanks to Cam
McMahon, Neville Roulston, Lani de Jong and
particularly Greg Rizio for your work on the day
to welcome our visitors.
Umpires
We would like to thank the umpires of Cricket
Victoria and the VSDCA for their contribution
to cricket officiating in games. We hope they all
felt welcome when visiting Box Hill
Families and friends
As players and administrators, we would like to
acknowledge the vital role played by partners,
Mums and Dads and siblings in supporting our
Club and our involvement in it. Your support is
a vital component of the fabric of Box Hill
Cricket Club.

SECRETARY’S ADDENDUM
This was my first season as Secretary of this
great Club. I would like to thank Peter
Robertson and Ken Trollope for their assistance
when I got “stuck” with what was required
when. The amount of work needed to get our
teams on the park is not always visible to those
who turn up to play each week and Box Hill is
very lucky to have a number of dedicated people
both current and former committee members and
others, who have the Club’s best interest at
heart.
Congratulations go to our coach and Men’s
Second XI captain, Michael Vozzo, on winning
the VSDCA James Earl Medal for the best
player in the VSDCA Second XI.
Penelope Cleghorn has decided to step away
from the committee after many years fulfilling
various roles including Women’s Director of
Cricket and this season, Vice President. It was
my honour to nominate her for the Caroline
Chisolm Award which has been presented for a
number of years by our then MLA Anna Burke.
I was very pleased Penelope’s nomination was
successful and a pleasant afternoon celebration
was held where she was presented with her
award, one of only two from sporting
backgrounds awarded.
During the season we held a successful “Pink
Stumps” weekend for the McGrath Foundation.
Thanks to all who contributed and helped out
with the barbecues after the games played on
that weekend. We easily achieved our funding
target.
I would particularly like to thank Greg Rizio,
who was prepared to help out whenever needed
and did an excellent job running the bar. In
addition to this, Greg took on the role of cleaner
this season and did a wonderful job keeping our
facilities in tip top condition, culminating with a
tick of approval by both the Council and the Box
Hill Hawks Football club on handover.
Thanks go to our members and their family
members who assisted in various tasks.
Personally I would like to thank Ray and Julie
Dejong who helped out at the end of season pack
up.
To Andrew Minter and my fellow committee
members, I would like to recognise your efforts.
It is not always easy to put up your hand to do a
role as you often find yourself doing more than
you bargained for! Hopefully, in the future,
more of our club members will decide to assist
be it in a committee role, helping out with a
social function or season set up/pack up. Many
hands make light work for all if you are willing
to help with one of those jobs which need to be
done to make us the successful club we strive to
be.

TREASURER’S REPORT
For the Season 2015/16 the Box Hill Cricket
Club recorded a $3,251 profit. This result
compares with a $9,907 profit recorded in the
season prior (2014/15). The deterioration in
performance vs. prior season is as a result of
4.1% reduction in income and a 2.7% increase in
expenses.
On the revenue side the Club recorded increased
income in Bar and Social vs. the season prior.
The performance in this area is largely the result
of the hard work of Greg Rizio behind the Bar,
Robyn Calder in the preparation of Thursday
Night Dinners and the Social Committee. Other
notable changes in income vs. the season prior
were the reduction in Donations and
Sponsorships reflecting a reduced number of
Club Sponsors, and a reduction in Subscriptions
as a result of fewer Junior Teams. Whilst
overall Grants were down vs. prior season the
Club was fortunate enough to once again benefit
from prize money associated with the Women’s
on field success.
Special thanks also to our Club Sponsors of
2015/16. Thanks to Fashion Clubwear and John
Hogg in particular, as well as those who
provided Ball Sponsorship. These contributions
are greatly appreciated by the Box Hill Cricket
Club Community.
On the Expense side costs were tightly
monitored and scrutinized with an emphasis on
investing only in core cricket related activities.
Overall expenses for the season increased by
$2,678 (2.7%), with increased Ground Rental
and other associated Whitehorse City Council
expenses increasing by $2,663. Other major
expenses required to operate the Box Hill
Cricket Club include the provision of Coaching
across the Club, the cost of cricket balls and the
pre-season training costs. These expenses
remained relatively stable vs. the season prior.
In summary, in Season 2015/16 the Club
recorded a modest profit for the second
consecutive season. Whilst this is a positive
outcome, there is still work to be done to ensure
the Club remains profitable for the future. For
the past two seasons the Club has relied heavily
on dividends from the VSDCA and CV, which is
not sustainable. As we plan for the future it is
important the Club develops a profitable
financial model that includes stable revenue
streams, that does not rely on Grants.
Finally I’d like to thank Andrew Minter and the
Box Hill Cricket Club Committee for their
support over the last three years I have held the
role of Treasurer. I’d also like to extend my
personal thanks to Peter Maxwell (Life Member
and CPA) for his advice and assistance in the
preparation of these financials.

BAR REPORT
Season 2015-16 was my first year taking up the role of Bar Manager at Box Hill. Reviewing the season, I have
come to the conclusion overall it was quite a successful year for the bar. In total, bar and social night takings for
season 15-16 came to a grand total of $15,679.10. Very similar to last years total takings.
The success behind the bar this season was not just due to my efforts, but also to the efforts of Neville Roulston
who helped when I was not able to attend on training nights as well as Michelle Winterton who was always willing
to help out when called upon. Furthermore, I am very grateful Michelle was able to contribute her time and effort
into helping out the club in this fashion.
Looking towards season 16-17, I am hoping even more people are willing to help, as we would like to see some
more faces helping out rather than the “usual” people. In terms of game days, I would like to see a change in which
someone would be able to occupy to bar from start of play to finish as I cannot be the scorer and serve at the same
time.
Greg Rizio

MEN’S COACHES SEASON REPORT
Firstly, I want to take this opportunity to
congratulate Anna and the girls on a terrific
Grand Final win to complete a “three peat”.
What an amazing effort but hardly surprising as
you are all very committed and deserve every
success you attain.
To Lumpy and Reido, well done on being able to
provide an environment in which the girls
continue to strive for ultimate success year after
year. I personally admire your leadership and
mentoring and hope that your continued success
will rub off on the men’s cricket also.
Also to Meg and her personal successes at the
recent T20 World Cup. You led brilliantly from
the front and it was disappointing for the
Southern Stars to be so close to holding aloft the
championship trophy at competitions end.
From the men’s playing point of view, whilst we
appeared to struggle on field (well the results
demonstrate that), I think it’s pertinent to focus
on some real positives to come from within our
talented list of players:
1st XI Captain, Paul Gloury, again led from the
front, taking out his second Bruce Lang medal
and third batting average trophy. He also
achieved his third club century of 122 against
Ivanhoe in Round 13….that’s one century for
each of his three seasons at the club.
20 year old Casey Filips, was given the task of
batting at 3 in the seconds this season and after a
shaky start, he produced one of the best innings
I’ve ever seen against Brunswick in round 5. At
the time, the twos were outside the top 6 with
just one win from the first four matches and were
set the task of chasing down a formidable 236 by
Brunswick. Casey led from the front and
demonstrated maturity beyond his years to hit
the winning runs and to finish on 130 no (9
wickets down). The fact the twos achieved a
finals berth, was on the back of this innings.
Despite his age, Luke Davidson at just 16 yo, hit
a brilliant 102 vs Caulfield in the thirds in Round
6. Once promoted to the twos he proved to be an
extremely talented cricketer with a bright future
and was the central figure to all practical jokes
and laughter in the group and was a pleasure to
be around.
Campbell Gerny took his cricket to another level
this year. At 16yo, he was the clubs leading
wicket taker with 39 wickets. If you take out his
11 U18 wickets, he would still be the leading
wicket taker. His improvement was most
obvious, having gain promotion to the twos after
just one game in the threes. His 3 for in the twos
against Roxburgh Pk/Broadmeadows, proves he
is an amazing talent and future 1st XI cricketer.
We fielded a young list last season with around
25 players being between the age of 15-21.
What was even more pleasing that come finals
time, many of these young players featured in
the 2’s and 3’s to experience finals pressure.
The top 4 batsmen in the 2’s Qualifying Final
were all in this age bracket as were the two
opening bowlers……good signs for the future.
Angus Hands continues to impress. His
consistent performances with both bat and ball in
the 2’s, earned him his debut 1st XI match and
hence was a clear stand out for Best Under 21
player. I’m looking forward to watching him to
continue to progress next season, along with his
shadow…
11
Ben Tatterson who spun the 3’s to a finals
victory and demonstrated he is ready to play
higher with a couple great performances in the
2’.
Whilst many players demonstrated improvement
last season, James Rizio’s development was
extremely pleasing. The winter spent in England
playing with the Crusaders was of great benefit
to him as when he returned, he was striking the
ball very well in the preseason. After a mediocre
season in 14/15, spent batting at 6 or 7 in the 3’s,
Riz was given the task to open in the 2’s and
with over 250 runs, including making his 1st XI
debut, he thoroughly deserved the Most
Improved trophy.
Finally, it was great to have Seb Mather and
Gaurav Parikh secure and lock down spots in the
top 3 in the firsts. These two have worked
extremely hard at their game over the past three
years and both deserve every success they
achieve in our best eleven. Both scored over 250
runs for the season and considering they are both
in their early 20’s, they have their best cricket
ahead of them and I look forward to seeing them
continue to bolster their forever growing
reputations.
Off field, despite average numbers in the
preseason, particularly at the fitness sessions,
training numbers for the regular season was good
and provided a good base for players going into
match day. Unfortunately, two planned centre
wicket training sessions had to be cancelled due
to inclement weather.
Players holidaying mid season was by far and
away the low point from my perspective. I have
to say, I’m unbelievably surprised players chose
to go away in season when you commit to
playing a team sport. Those guys weren’t letting
me down, but guys like Riz, Cam, Bucks, Spoon,
Goo, Cam Gerny, Rob etc, who rarely miss a
training session and never a match. There was
no doubt unavailabilities led to team in-balance
and losses, but it did provide opportunity to
othes and as mentioned before, guys like Cam
Gerny and James Debney made the most of it.
Let’s commit to having no repeat of this next
season.
However, we go into 2016/17 with renewed
promise and enthusiasm in the knowledge that
our list is demonstrating great improvement and
development. Then you add the recruitment of
ex-BHCC and Camberwell star, James Pearson,
and you can understand why there is an air of
optimism at the Mustangs. Can’t wait to get
things rolling again!
Thanks to Mints and the committee for their
support. Same to Reido, PG, Ken and Robbo on
the selection committee. I have greatly
appreciated Roger Gerny’s assistance at training
and Riz snr on match day You both have
relieved me of other distractions which has
enabled me to concentrate on
captaining/coaching.
Thanks to Robyn Calder and her magnificent
Thursday night dinners. Robyn's hard work and
commitment to making BHCC the most homely
club for its players is well received by all.
Having players stay back on Thursdays to enjoy
a feed and listen to selections ensures a healthy
club culture.
And finally to my wife Vicki, who has always
supported me chasing my dreams and passions.

WOMEN’S COACH’S SEASON REPORT
Another season another First X1 Premiership,
our third in succession! This is a remarkable
achievement; one which everyone involved on
and off the field should feel incredibly proud of.
Our recent record as a club is becoming
imposing:
Played in six successive P1 Grand Finals,
winning the last three
Played in four P1 T20 Finals, winning two
Played in a P2 Grand Final and two T20
Finals
Won a 3rd
XI T20 Final
Aside from another premiership, our season had
many highlights:
Our Meg Lanning Academy has been
running for 3 seasons, providing young
players from inside and outside of our club
an off-season development experience with
experienced coaches. The 2-day program
put together by Chris Cunningham was
brilliant and culminated in the girls having
the opportunity to watch English
international, Danielle Wyatt bowl to Meg
Lanning in a net session. The academy girls
were watching at close quarters and
analysing the ‘battle’ in discussion with
Meg, Danni and Chris.
Hosting 80 girls and their parents at City
Oval for the launch of the Anna Lanning
Shield’s second season.
Our junior program, now in its eighth
season, continued to serve us well – 21 of the
48 players (44%) who played senior cricket
with us this season, were either current or
past players in our U14s. Four of those
players – Bella Gietzmann, Zoe Griffiths,
Amy Jennings and Izzy Weber – played in
this year’s P1 premiership.
We had 3 players selected in junior state
teams, Bella Gietzmann (U15s), Makinley
Blows (U18s) and Hayleigh Brennan (U18s).
Hayleigh also went to Sri Lanka with the
Shooting Stars, Australia’s U23 team.
The Eastern U18s, comprising of mostly Box
Hill players (Amy Jennings, Lani Dejong,
Sophie Jennings, Tansi Price, Holly Spencer,
Zoe Griffiths and Bella Gianangello),
coached by Tim Reid and Rebecca Carter,
were State Champions for the second year
running.
Meg Lanning, Cassie Brock and Anna
Lanning were all in the VicSpirit squad
again, with Meg having continued success in
her role as captain of VicSpirit, Melbourne
Stars and the Australian Southern Stars.
Meg and Anna (Melbourne Stars) and Cassie
(Melbourne Renegades) were also part of the
inaugural season of the Women’s Big Bash
(WBBL). In addition, Makinley Blows
(Renegades) and Hayleigh Brennan (Stars)
gained valuable experience as rookies in
those respective programs.
The WBBL was an outstanding success and a
landmark development for women’s cricket, not
only in Australia but worldwide. Women’s
cricket is now gaining greater exposure than
ever before and while this will present some
player availability challenges for club cricket,
the overwhelming response to the WBBL and
the opportunities that will open up for players
going forward, points to exciting times ahead.
This will also bring greater focus to club
programs, with those clubs that ‘get it right’
making themselves attractive to emerging elite
talent. We have to ensure we lead the way in
this regard.
Whilst our First XI premiership ensured our
season can only be viewed as successful, we do
have some underlying challenges. In the past six
seasons, whilst the First XI has played in a grand
final every year and now won three flags, our
other teams have not enjoyed the same success.
13
If we are to address this and give every player at
our club the opportunity to taste finals and
premierships, we must add to the depth of our
playing list and increase the number of
committed, regular players we have at our club.
As always the greatest impact of player
availability week to week was borne by the
Third XI. Our regular players showed great
resilience to make the T20 Final then miss the
four narrowly when they lost their final game. A
season record of 11-7 was actually a great result
when you consider we had to forfeit three
games. Nicole Breschkin came out of retirement
yet again to be the skipper and did a great job
leading from the front and sharing her
experience with our younger players. Season
highlights included: maiden half centuries for
Stacey Haughton 56 no v Bayswater, Liz
Mitchell 57 no v Pakenham, Kate Schie 63 no v
Dingley and Nic’s 5/3 v Ferntree Upper Gully.
The ‘evergreen’ Marg Pretty returned to help us
out once again this season and took out the
bowling award, whilst also making 2 half
centuries. Michelle Winterton took out the
batting award, including a top score of 70, after
taking over the captaincy when Nic went on
maternity leave. Hailey Ferris, Ellora Kelly and
Haleema Shiraz (all from our U14s), along with
Bella Giannangelo and Eleanor Forwood, all had
their introduction to senior cricket and we hope
they will become long-term players at our club.
The team highlight for the Thirds was making
the T20 Final. It was always going to be a tough
game, playing the very experienced and
undefeated top team, Frankston. Batting first we
lost early wickets and then struggled to 9/49, a
total we were never likely to defend. Frankston
passed us one down in 8 overs but in all the
circumstances it was still a wonderful effort to
make the final.
The Second XI had a 6-12 record and finished
8th, after being runners-up last season. In
relative terms, if you look at where our Seconds
finished by comparison to the other 5 teams who
play P1s, this was our worst season in the last
six – a strong indicator that injuries,
unavailability and retirements took their toll on
our player depth. Pennie Harrison took on the
captaincy in what would prove to be a very
tough role, leading an inexperienced team that
invariably had 4 or 5 changes most weeks before
Christmas. Pennie showed great resilience and
persistence which is typical of her commitment
to the club over the past 7-8 seasons but
unfortunately was not rewarded with the team
results we all hoped for. Season highlights
included: a maiden Premier level century to
Chloe Ip 112 no v Prahran and Amy Jennings 54
v Prahran, her first half century in the Second
XI. Amy also won the batting award after a very
consistent season at the top of the order.
The biggest positive for our club from a tough
season for the Seconds was the opportunity for
players like Paris Penny, Bella Giannangelo,
Tiana Atkinson, Hailey Ferris and Eleanor
Forwood to get their first experience at this
level. I am confident they all benefited from the
experience and we look forward to some serious
senior players emerging from this group over
coming seasons. Madi Clayton emerged
towards the end of the season as a young leader
within our group and also won the bowling
award. Chloe Ip was rewarded for a consistent
season winning the Marja van der Toorren
Award.
The First XI finished with an 8-10 record, plus
one crucial tie in the final game to struggle into
fourth spot. It was a challenging season and
through a combination of form, injury and
representative cricket we played 24 players in
the Firsts this season, including six debutants –
Hayleigh Brennan, Lani Dejong, Sophie
Jennings, Paris Penny, Holly Spencer and Kristy
Williams.
The arrival at the club during the season of
Hayleigh Brennan (from Dandenong) and Kristy
Williams (from Sth Aust) certainly added to the
depth of our playing group. Hayleigh quickly
established herself as our strike bowler and
bowled some outstanding spells – none better
than the semi-final when she bowled 10 overs
14
1/12, including 54 dot balls. Kristy through her
desire to compete unconditionally, really added
to our fielding effort, provided some late innings
boundaries with the bat and took some vital
wickets, none more so than the 2 she took in
quick succession on grand final day.
Izzy Weber at 15 years old emerged as another
young player with great potential. After playing
some early games through the opportunities
presented by injuries and other player
unavailability, she became a key contributor
with the ball and at the half way mark of the
season was among our leading wicket takers. It
was fitting reward for Izzy to become a
premiership player at such a young age.
Pip Taylor in her second season with the club,
had an outstanding season and finished as the
wicketkeeper with the most dismissals in the
competition (28 – 14 catches and 14 stumpings).
Her ability to keep up at the stumps to our
mediums was significant and created consistent
pressure on opposition batters. Those who saw
the quality of her work in our semi-final against
EMP, would be in no doubt that Pip is an
exceptional talent with the gloves and a key to
the success we ultimately enjoyed.
Our finals campaign effectively started in the
final round of the season. Going into this game
against Dandenong on equal points with them
but ahead on percentage, it was a ‘knockout’
game. After putting 189 on the board we were
quickly under pressure as Dandenong put on 65
for the first wicket. Despite a short period of
ascendency for us in the middle overs,
Dandenong were in total control and at 2/173 in
the 38th
over our season was all but over. What
followed was incredible… 8/16, 6/2, 5/1, 3/0 to
tie the game and sneak into finals on percentage.
Bella Gietzmann led the way with 4/21 off 10
overs but the ability of every player to execute
their skills under enormous pressure, was quite
remarkable, producing an effort and result that
will live with all who saw it forever. It shows a
special type of character and resilience to win
against the odds. That is undoubtedly the type
of club we want to be – a club that finds a way
to win. Only a few years back, we were
certainly not that club!
The semi-final saw us take on our old rivals
EMP. We had not managed to beat them during
the season and they finished well clear on top of
the ladder losing only 3 games. With conditions
overcast and a seaming wicket, it was a tough
day to bat. Thanks to our most consistent all-
round bowling and fielding effort for the season
we bowled EMP out for 83. Then after being
5/27 and 6/44, we passed their score six down.
We were led by Bella 5/12 off 9.2 overs,
Hayleigh 1/12 off 10 overs and 19 no, Cassie
1/14 off 10 overs and 35 no, and Pip with 4
outstanding catches.
Whilst we all enjoy winning and are always
striving to win ‘comfortably’, there is no doubt
that having two close games leading in to the
Grand Final provided us with the perfect
preparation. Our opponent, Melbourne, had the
better of us throughout the season and held a 3-1
winning record, though we undoubtedly held the
edge in finals experience. The Grand Final was
a tough, tight game of cricket which ebbed and
flowed throughout the day.
Batting first, there was enough in the wicket to
make it a very even contest between bat and ball.
Anna Lanning and Casey Hawley got us away to
a solid start with an opening stand of 32.
15
Cassie Brock joined Anna in the 15th
over and
they added 73 for the 2nd
wicket. When Anna
fell for a well compiled 53, we were 2/105 in the
32nd
over. Losing Pip soon after, the game was
tipping Melbourne’s way, before a period of
consolidation followed as Zoe Griffiths joined
Cassie to steady the innings and take us to 3/133
from 40 overs. What followed would prove to
be one of the pivotal periods in the game. A
great partnership of 75 unfolded, with Cassie the
anchor, whilst 16yo Zoe took control. After
scoring 4 from her first 16 balls, when Zoe
departed she had transformed the innings with
49 from 50 balls to leave us 4/182 in the 47th
over. Cassie saw us through to 5/204 with a
mature, controlled 57 no off 82 balls. This was a
score that we saw as ‘very defendable’ with the
old ‘runs on the board’ adage about to be put to
the test.
Melbourne showed no signs of early nerves in
their innings and quickly took the ascendency.
Our bowlers couldn’t find that same consistency
of recent weeks and our fielding was below the
standard we expect. At drinks the score was
1/114 with Melbourne needing only 91 runs at
less than 4 an over. In the 28th
over the game
changed when Casey Hawley pulled off a diving
one handed catch to dismiss their best bat,
Hayley Jensen for 47. Although Melbourne had
their noses in front at 2/121, this quickly became
4/144 and then 6/151 when Kristy took 2
wickets in the 37th
over. Another wicket, this
time for Penelope Cleghorn and at 7/162 from
42 we were back on top, with 43 still required at
more than 5 runs an over. The required rate
stayed over 5 for several overs but with the
pressure building on Melbourne, they responded
strongly with a ‘big’ 46th
over – the equation had
become 20 off 24 balls. A couple of tight overs
left Melbourne needing 12 from 12 balls, still
with 3 wickets in hand. Every ball that remained
in the innings carried enormous consequences
for the result. A brilliant throw from Amy
Jennings to Pip on the 2nd
ball of the 49th
over
produced a runout and by the end of the over it
was 8/198. Hayleigh bowled the final over and
the composure of every player was outstanding –
you cannot buy ‘big game’ experience and you
cannot put a value on players who can stay in the
moment. First ball of the final over produced
another runout when skipper Anna Lanning
gathered the ball at short-cover then ran in to
break the stumps and made it 9/198 –
experience, composure, leadership! The next
ball produced a single, and then a drive to Zoe at
mid-on was fielded cleanly and returned to
Hayleigh (back to the stumps as bowlers should
be!) for our fourth runout of the innings – game
over and we win (again) by 5 runs!!
This premiership team included five teenagers
and had an average age of just 21. Only
Penelope, Danni Montague, Cassie and Anna
have played in all three flags. In total across our
three flags, we now have 20 premiership players.
This era is not built on the dominance of a small
group of players but rather a growing culture of
success and great leadership from our
experienced players, which enables our younger
players to make important contributions. When
we look back at last year’s premiership team,
three of our top five batters that day were not
playing this time (Meg, Rebecca and Sarah
Chancellor-Goddard). This undoubtedly adds to
the merit of this season’s victory.
Cassie Brock won her third Betty Wilson Medal
and second in succession, as the Player of the
Final. This was Cassie’s fifth premiership in the
past 6 seasons (2 with EMP and now 3 with us).
Cassie also won her second successive club
championship after a season in which she made
her maiden P1 century (100 v Melbourne),
scored 411 runs at 34.25 and took 27 wickets at
15.19 – outstanding! And so importantly, loved
by her teammates (and coach) because Cassie
exudes ‘team’ in everything she does.
16
This past 12 months has again been one of
incredible achievement for our club captain (and
captain of Australia, Victoria and the Melbourne
Stars), Meg Lanning. Meg won our batting
average with 379 runs at 126.33, including 2
centuries and a top score of 170 no v Melbourne.
Meg continues to be a great ambassador for our
club and we should never take it for granted that
we have such an incredible player at Box Hill.
In this past year she has:
Won her 4th Sharon Tredrea Award as
VicSpirit’s Best Player
Been the leading run scorer in the inaugural
WBBL
Led the Melbourne Stars to 7 wins and in 6
of those wins Meg was Player of the Match
Led Australia to multiple series wins
including reclaiming the Ashes
Scored 2166 runs at 60, with a SR over 100
This time last year Meg was ICC’s #3 batter in
ODIs and #1 batter in T20s. This year she is
now ranked #1 in both forms of the game. We
are all incredibly proud of your achievements
Meg.
As always, there were a number of people who
made significant contributions to our season off
the field:
Tim Reid was outstanding once again in his
role as Assistant Coach. His passion,
commitment and knowledge of the game are
pivotal to the success we have had and show
in the development of our younger players.
There can be no greater advertisement for
Tim’s work than Amy Jennings and Izzy
Weber becoming First XI premiership
players after spending virtually all of last
season in the Seconds with Tim.
Robyn Calder’s ongoing commitment to
being our First XI Scorer is appreciated
greatly. We are reminded regularly of how
fortunate we are to have Robyn when our
opposition often has their players scoring for
them.
Penelope Cleghorn has been a committee
member and the Director of Women’s
Cricket for the seven seasons I have been
coach. Penelope has announced she will be
stepping down from this position. It is
difficult to convey just how much Penelope’s
contribution is appreciated and how much
she has contributed to the growth of our
women’s program and the success we are
now enjoying. To work so tirelessly and
enthusiastically whilst still playing at a high
level and becoming a 3-time premiership
player says so much about Penelope’s
character, passion and dedication to our club.
Thank you Penelope from every player and
every coach you have supported over the
past 7 seasons!
I am incredibly proud of our club and our
players; in particular the core group who work
consistently at their games. Three premierships
in succession is an amazing achievement but we
cannot become complacent. People generally
don’t see a fall coming for successful clubs.
Other clubs chase successful clubs hard… then
if you have taken your eyes off the ball and
stopped striving to keep improving, they go past
you! On Grand Final Day after we had won,
several outside people said to me ‘your club has
a culture of success’. We should be proud
outsiders think that. It creates a mystique. It can
and does intimidate opponents. But that aura
can disappear quickly if you stop winning. Our
opposition will continue to measure themselves
against us.
We must prepare well for the challenges that lay
ahead. Nobody tires of success but sometimes
we can forget how hard you have to work for it.
This successful era has many more chapters to
be written if all of us are prepared to roll up our
sleeves and keep working.

MEN’S FIRST XI SEASON REPORT
After a frustrating year (just four wins) and our
least competitive season in recent times, it is a
case of onward and upward for the BHCC Men’s
First Eleven leading into 2016/17.
When it comes down to it our side was simply
not up to standard in any discipline this season.
These basic season statistics display our lack of
competitiveness vs finals playing sides.
BHCC First Eleven vs Top Six Team Average
BHCC Wickets Taken: 95 (2nd least in comp) vs
Top Six Average: 111
BHCC Wickets Lost: 109 vs Top Six Average:
96
BHCC Runs Scored For: 2001 vs Top Six
Average: 2,228
BHCC Runs Scored Against: 2,207 vs Top Six
Average: 1,970
Highlights
There were a number of fantastic individual
performances throughout the season which need
to be mentioned.
Batting
Seb Mather 51 vs EHCC (Rd.1); 58 vs Ivanhoe
(Rd.13)
Gaurav Parikh 51 vs Kew (Rd.2); 62 vs Preston
(Rd.6)
Paul Gloury 67 vs Kew (Rd.2) & 122 no vs
Ivanhoe (Rd.13)
Shehan Perera 72 vs Balwyn (Rd.12) after strong
performances in the seconds.
It was exciting to see two home grown BHCC
players in Seb and Gaurav scoring multiple
fifties. Both work extremely hard at their games
and have very exciting futures. Gaurav's match
winning knock of 62 vs Preston included a last
wicket stand of 60 with Brendan King which
showed maturity beyond his years. Sri Lankan
import Shehan scored freely on a tough, popping
wicket during his knock of 72 and we hope to
see him back at BHCC again this year.
Bowling
Andrew Blake 3/38 (18 overs) vs Preston (Rd.6);
5/34 (7 overs) vs Noble Park (Rd.7)
Brendan King 3/12 (5 overs) vs Coburg (Rd.3);
3/45 (17 overs) vs Balwyn (Rd.12); 4/35
(9 overs) vs Ivanhoe (Rd.13)
Sam Blake 5/15 (12.5 overs) vs Brunswick
(Rd.5)
Steve Wotherspoon 3/32 (9 overs) vs Mt
Waverley; 3/35 (16 overs) vs Preston (Rd.6)
Rob Fortington 3/53 (16 overs) vs Kew (Rd.2)
Andrew Blake’s performances vs Preston &
Noble Park were a true masterclass and we were
sorry to lose his bowling to injury in the later
part of the season. Steve Wotherspoon bowled
consistently in his first full season of first eleven
cricket. His 3/35 and 36 opening the batting vs
Preston were a massive contributor in that win.
Sam Blake and Brendan King showed class at
various times and Rob Fortington led our attack
finishing the season with 20 wickets @ 19.5.
Moving Forward
This group of players won’t be defined by the
2015/16 season but in how we respond moving
forward. Off field, the committee is working
extremely hard to build a culture of success. It’s
now up to us to put in the effort on the training
track and show the hunger required to succeed
and play a strong and consistent brand of
Subbies cricket. We’re also very excited to
welcome new recruit James Pearson to the club,
who's skill and experience will no doubt prove
invaluable.
My thanks go to Neville Roulston, who once
again, took on the task of First XI scorer for
season 2015/16.
Bring on season 2016/17

18
MEN’S SECOND XI SEASON REPORT
After losing a couple of very experienced
players from the previous season, the 2’s
selected a few new faces and blooded some of
our promising young players in Round 1.
Michael Barro, Jordan Buckingham and Matt
Graham joined the club and James Rizio, Casey
Filips and James Box were given an opportunity
to establish themselves after a solid year in
14/15 in the 3’s.
The season began well with an excellent run
chase of 170 odd against Endeavour Hills
mainly thanks to a 5/20 from newcomer Matt
Graham. From a batting point of view we
wanted to bat with more intent than last season
and we delivered well with the 170 being
completed in just over 35 overs.
Then the next few weeks didn’t exactly go to
plan.
Kew CC just pipped us on the back of facing 30
more overs by chasing down our 207 in the 90th
over.
We then got washed out against Coburg, who by
seasons end proved to be one of the bottom 4
teams and then in Rd 4, Mt Waverley chased
down our 158 in a one dayer. We recovered
from 5/48 to get the 158, but their opening stand
of 125, taught us a lesson on the importance of
building partnerships.
Week one of Round 5, we won the toss on the
greenest wicket I’ve seen and sent Brunswick
into bat. It proved the right decision as Boxy’s
first ball reared off a good length and went
searing past the openers helmet. But to
Brunswick’s credit, they stuck to their task and
batted the whole day for 236. DB was the pick
of the bowlers after being promoted from the 3’s
with 3/60 off 19 overs.
At this point, I thought our season was in
trouble……if we could make 236 we would go
one win, three losses and a draw against one of
the bottom teams.
I decided to mix up our pre-game warm up to
relax the guys with a nearest the pin throwing
competition……the Ethnics beat the Aussies
easily. This competition would be used
spasmodically throughout the year, with the
ethnics reigning supreme 4-0.
The relaxed atmosphere proved vital after an
early hiccup saw us at 1/9, our young guns took
control of the game. Riz and Case put on 78 and
then Jnr and Case another 59. Whilst always
ahead of the run rate, we lost wickets regularly
until DB joined Case at 9/220. They both batted
smartly to get us across the line and Case
finishing the day on a brilliant 130 no. Case’s
innings turned our fortunes for the remainder of
the season.
We then beat Preston by defending a meagre 156
thanks to Boxy’s 3/22 and then on the final
game before Xmas beat Noble Park in 43°C heat
thanks to Riz batting through the innings for
50 no and putting on 113 partnership with yours
truly in quick time. DB and Spinksy’s 4 fa’s
saw us roll the home team for 151, 44 runs short
of our target.
Upon return, we had a stinker against Croydon,
but followed with a first class win against the
second placed Plenty Valley. After being 2/157
in just over 30 overs thanks to Mark Askham’s
54, Smoz 24, Davo 37 and Shehan’s 32, we lost
8/19 in the worst 40 minutes of cricket for the
season. But our bowlers were on top of their
game by rolling the opposition for 145 in
89 overs!! DB again proved to be a factor with
4/37 off 22.
19
Round 10 saw the emergence of the Baz!
After a damp wicket delayed play, we knocked
up a quick 6/240dec off 63 against the bottom
placed Roxburgh Park/Broadmeadows, mainly
thanks to Shehan’s superb 81 and Deb’s classy
50 no. It was then our young attack’s turn with
Boxy (3/5) and Baz (5/8) destroying their bats
dismissing them for just 18. Herb chipped in
with 2/0.
When we sent them back in, Boxy had tweaked
his groin and Baz had some back soreness, so we
turned to 16 yo Cam Gerny who took an
excellent bag of 3/19. Herb chipped in again
with and Mark got 4/20.
Unfortunately, this is where I felt our season
turned for the worse. The next round against
Bayswater, we had four opening bowlers from
the 2’s/3’s away on holidays or injured. We just
couldn’t defend a sizeable 179 in the one dayer
and then next round against Balwyn, we just
couldn’t get a string of wickets and their 192
was just too much.
The final round against Ivanhoe was dominated
by our Under 21 player of the year Gus Hands,
which saw him deliver a terrific all round
performance taking 2/21 and making 69. This
win had us sneak into the finals in sixth place.
The Qualifying final against Croydon was
disappointing from the moment the coin was
tossed. They elected to bat first on a road and
made 260. At the end of the first day, despite
bowling our allotted overs, we had to face 7
overs and finished 2/7……hopefully this rule
will be altered next season.
Shehan damaging his thumb in the field didn’t
help as he had to bat at 11, but in all honesty we
were never in the hunt, getting rolled for an
ordinary 99.
Obviously the positives was the emergence of
our younger stars like Riz who opened the entire
season for 240 runs, Boxy as our main opening
bowler, Case proving himself as a star in the
future, Davo making 138 runs in just 5 digs and
obviously best mates Gus and Tatto also proving
they have more than enough ability to play at a
higher standard. Both DB and Herb (25 wickets)
were both invaluable with the ball and their
experience was invaluable at vital stages in
games.
A huge thanks to Riz snr for his assistance in
scoring and acting as Team Manager. I can’t
speak highly enough of qualities and his
willingness to assist. It was a pity we couldn’t
go deeper into the finals just for him.
Anyway, there are some promising signs for the
club, with the twos making finals for the second
season in a row, but this time with a very
inexperienced team. Six players in our finals
team were between the age of 16-20 which
augurs well for the future as long as each of
them continues to commit to improving and
developing their respective games.

MEN’S THIRD XI SEASON REPORT
This year we let a flag slip by as we had the
team to win it. All the older guys knew this is
and that is why it hurt so much to fall short once
again.
There was plenty of talent in the team young and
old. At times during the season we under
achieved then other times we showed what we
are capable of by playing to our full potential.
One of the hard things playing Third eleven
cricket is the team changes so much week to
week, we had 29 different players play in the
team throughout the season.
Third eleven is a breeding ground for young
talent to strut their stuff along with the older
experience players to show leadership and pass
on their knowledge of the game onto the young
bucks. At times not only in this team but
throughout the club we lack commitment from
players which hurts the team and the team mates
you play with. I am sure with a bit more
commitment from player and the hunger to
succeed we can achieve anything we put our
minds too.

Young Players to watch for the future:
Campbell Gerny had a brilliant season all round
for the club he is a player to watch. Within the
next season or two when he grows and gets
stronger he will climb the ranks quickly.
Jack Beardsley a Craig Shield Player who
played four senior games for us at the back end
of the season will become a big name player for
the club.
Brant Hubber is another kid who played after
Christmas for us. Brant will become a solid
player for the club he is a young bloke who is
keen to learn and he wants to succeed playing
cricket.
I did challenge the group after our Semi Final
loss to Mt Waverley. I hope you all took what I
said on board and come back bigger and stronger
next season.
Last couple things I would like to thank all the
players I played with this season we had laughs,
we shed some frustrations at times, most of all
we enjoyed playing cricket together.
Thanks to Smoz and Snelly for their leadership
come game day. During the season I had a few
issues I was dealing with so without your
support boys on and off the field I would have
struggled at times thanks once again
Moving forward I am not sure I will be leading
the ship next season as I think it is time for
someone else to take over. I am keen to go
around again to Win a Flag.

MEN’S FOURTH XI SEASON REPORT
In 2015/16 the Fourth Eleven experienced a
rather up and down season. Ultimately, weather
and some fragile batting and poor form
conspired to lead to us finishing the season in
the middle of the table.
We began the season poorly in Round 1, a one
day game against Endeavour Hills. Winning the
toss and batting, we found the going tough early
on and our innings would have been in disarray
without a handy 23 from James Esposito.
Akshay Tickoo also scored 21 and we limped to
76 off 35 overs. Mark Simpson-Parker, our
Austrian recruit, bowled with fire at the
beginning of the innings, however was unable to
take a wicket. Robertson (4/35) took the only
four wickets to fall as Endeavour Hills made
short work of our small total, passing us in the
16th
over.
Round 2 was a two day game against Malvern.
A solid bowling effort throughout the day meant
we restricted Malvern to what was a par score at
Springfield of 228. Campbell Gerny (4/50) and
Harsh Mehta (4/89) were the best of the bowlers.
We began day 2 in the belief that we could win,
however we steadily lost wickets and struggled
to score as Malvern bowled tightly, particularly
to our top order. David Carter (64) played a
lone hand as we were eventually dismissed for
129.
After a washout in Round 3, we faced Mount
Waverley in Round 4 in a one day game. Tight,
consistent bowling from all of our bowlers
meant we restricted Mount Waverley to 7/133
with the wickets being shared. Unfortunately,
our batters got starts, but were unable to
capitalise meaning we were dismissed for 105
without batting out our overs.
Due to the golf at Huntingdale, we had to play
Round 5 as a Sunday-Sunday two day game on
Oakleigh’s main ground. This was a great
opportunity for some of our younger players to
experience playing on a Subbies 1sts and 2nds
ground.
We won the toss and bowled first with the
openers, Michael Barro and Robertson bowling
tightly without taking early wickets. A change
in bowling led to Ken Trollope (4/41) and Stuart
Johnstone (2/30) taking the first of their wickets.
Unfortunately, we were unable to take the key
wicket of Oakleigh’s number 5 bat and he led
their side to 9/238 off their 80 overs. Luke
Kukuruzovic began Day 2 in bright form and
knocked up 38 before he was dismissed. Some
strong resistance from Rajiv Kumar (30) and
David Carter (18) was all we had and we were
dismissed for 118 off 64.5 overs.
We began Round 6 on the bottom of the ladder,
desperately needing a win. Losing the toss, we
bowled first and bowled tightly, finally
dismissing Caulfield for 162 off 72.4 overs. A
highlight of the bowling was Toby Cox (3/8), on
debut taking his first wickets for what will be a
long career for Box Hill Cricket Club. Day 2
saw our best batting performance for the year. A
solid start from openers Harry Date (11) and
Robertson (27) meant we took the shine off the
new ball for the first time before our middle
order Rajiv Kumar (69*), David Carter (31) and
James Esposito (66*) led us to a declaration at
3/238. A genuine highlight of the season was
Kumar and Esposito’s unbeaten partnership of
142. Michael Barro took the new ball in
Caulfield’s second innings and bowled with pace
and aggression. His 4 wickets meant Caulfield
was in real trouble and we took their final wicket
23
with 1 over and 4 balls left in the day - our first
win of the season was also an outright!
Round 7 against Elsternwick was abandoned
due to excessive heat.
After the Christmas break, we faced ladder
leader Croydon in Round 8 at Springfield Park.
Cam Gerny led the attack with the ball finishing
with figures of 4/19 from his 8 overs. Good
batting performances from Luke Kukuruzovic
(34) and Akshay Tickoo (19) at the top of the
order as well as good middle order batting from
David Carter (20) and James Esposito (13) were
not quite enough as we fell just short finishing
our innings at 8/131. We knew our best cricket
could match teams entrenched in the top 6.
Round 9 was a one day game away at Ormond.
This game saw one of our better bowling
performances for the season. Bowling first we
dismissed Ormond for 68. Bailey Bowyer, from
our Craig Shield team bowled very well taking
4/10 in his first senior game for the club. Our
batting innings was a little wobbly, however, we
passed Ormond in the 25th
over. Akshay Tickoo
top scored with a well-made 31.
After another washout, Round 11 was a one day
game against Bayswater. Batting first, we set a
slightly below par score of 5/113, however, our
batters weathered some excellent bowling from a
skilled Bayswater bowling unit who had a
number of bowlers at their disposal who had
played 2nd
eleven cricket during the 2015/16
season. Our bowling was a little untidy and
Bayswater passed our score with 9 overs to
spare. Abuzar Faisal (2/17) was the best of the
bowlers.
Playing our first game against new East Group
team Balwyn meant we had to play Round 12 as
a Sunday-Sunday game due to the unavailability
of their 3rds and 4ths ground. An excellent
bowling performance on a difficult wicket meant
we dismissed Balwyn for 77 in the 53rd
over.
Robertson (5/16) and Trollope (4/17) were the
pick of the bowlers. Our fragile top order was
again on show in our batting innings.
Fortunately Kumar (36*) and Trollope (37*)
were able to combine for an unbeaten 75 run
partnership, ensuring we took first innings points
and were able to attempt to bowl for an outright
in the slim hopes of keeping our season alive.
Unfortunately we were unable to capture the
same consistency we displayed in the first
innings and when stumps were drawn, Balwyn
finished their second innings at 5/178.
Our final game of the season finished on a
positive with a strong win against Moorabbin in
Round 13. We bowled first and kept them to
6/60 from 40 overs with Blewitt (2/6) and
Tickoo (2/13) the pick of the bowlers. Batsmen
Lachlan Fraser (13*) and Sam Hodder (45*)
made short work of the chase as we passed their
total off a mere 9.2 overs. A positive end to a
somewhat disappointing season.
As captain, I’d like to thank the invaluable
support of senior players Barge and Ken. Your
consistency of performance, advice and
leadership is something I’m extremely grateful
for and without you both, leading this team
would be a far more difficult task. I’d also like
to acknowledge consistent players like Esposito,
Fraser, Tickoo and Kukuruzovic. You guys give
everything each time you step on to the ground
and it’s a pleasure playing with you when you
aren’t playing in the 2nds or 3rds. To Cam,
Rajiv and Toby, you are all capable of pushing
into higher elevens. You just need to find
consistency of performance that will enable you
to play your best cricket on a weekly basis.
Finally, to Burra, Stress, Johnno and Mints,
thank you for filling in at various times during
the season. It’s not always easy to have 44 guys
available every week, particularly when we’re
playing Sundays and I was glad you were there
for me to call on when I needed you. I look
forward to the challenges of next season and
hope we can find that illusive consistency with
the bat as you never know what is going to
happen in the 4th
eleven competition. Bring on
season 2016/17.

JUNIOR PROGRAM 2015/16:
The 2015/ 16 season saw BHCC field seven
junior teams in the Eastern Cricket Association.
These were two under 10, one under 12, two
under 14 (including one girl’s only team) and
one under 18.
Due to a large amount of the previous season’s
under 16 premiership team being top age we had
the unfortunate situation of not being able to
field an under 16’s team for 2015/16. We did
however have the great opportunity to enter an
under 18 team for the first time in the clubs
history. Further to this, we had the opportunity
to partner with Deepdene Bears Cricket Club in
fielding a combined under 14C side.
Results were mixed as we had quite a number of
of the Friday night games for the under 14 and
18 teams drawn with a constant trend of rain on
game days.
We also ran a full Milo program for the year
with an average attendance of 20 participants on
a Saturday morning. James Rizio coordinated
this for the year and did a magnificent job
creating a lot of fun as the children start out with
cricket.
It was very exciting to have a new coaching
group this year across all teams with a mixture
of senior players and SEDA students stepping up
to help out.
Coaches:
Under 18 Cam McMahon,Shannon Blewitt
Under 14 Mark Askham (Boys)
Nick Fletcher (Girls)
Under12 Josh Martin
Under 10 Rob Forington, Kieren Murphy,
Andrew Wyver, Cathy Jones
A special thanks also to all the parents who
helped out throughout the year on match days
but especially to the parents who took on the
team mangers roles. Without them we wouldn’t
have a club to develop young players.
Team Managers:
Under 18 Roger Gerny
Under 14 Penny Cundall (Boys)
Annie Kelly, Sharon Spencer &
Ashley Spencer. (Girls)
Under12 James Simmonds
Under 10 Hugh Martin, Janelle Penrose
All in all the season was a great success as we
achieved what we set out to do and that is to
provide a club that everyone wants to play with.
Everyone had plenty of fun along with
improving their skills in the great game of
cricket.
Ross Collins
BHCC Junior Coordinator 2015/16
Under 18 Team Welcome to the first ever report on the Box Hill
under 18s. This was the first season that Box
Hill had entered a side into the ECA under 18 S
J Hamilton Friday night competition. Home
games were played at Springfield Park on turf.
Guided by senior players Cam McMahon and
Shannon Blewitt and team managed by Roger
Gerny, 17 players represented the under 18s
including 2 x 14 year olds, 4 over age players, 2
x women’s players, an overseas representative
and some home grown talent that spans 10 years
playing at the Box Hill CC.
26
There were 8 sides in the competition with 4
offering turf wicket conditions. This was to be a
telling factor in deciding ladder positions with 4
draws coming from washouts (in two of those
games, wins were most likely having bowled
one side out for 107 and making 6/214 against
grand final winners in Mont Albert). Indeed
luck was against us having only gaining 4
results. We won 2 and lost 2 and missed on the
finals by 3 points. Cruel luck. If statistics are
any indication, the under 18s had the highest
team batting average and the lowest team
bowling average at Box Hill CC. Statistics don’t
mean luck.
Cam McMahon and Shannon Blewitt deserve a
big thank you for guiding the young men and
women throughout the season. They all had a
fantastic time and learned more about the great
game of cricket. I cannot thank myself, so I
won’t.
Awards for Season 2015/16
The batting award went to Luke Davidson who
amassed 208 runs at a healthy average of 104.00.
Congratulations. A worthy mention must be
made of second placed Mitch Mahoney who
made 192 runs @ 48.00. Super effort.
The bowling award goes to Campbell Gerny
who took 11 wickets @ 11.09 with worthy
mention to Angus Hands who took 10 wickets
@ 7.60.
The Coaches Award (decided jointly by Cam
and Shan) went to Mitch Mahoney. Mitch
trained as hard as he worked in the games and
was a delight to have in the team.
Thank you to all the parents that provided the
lifts needed on those Friday nights and the effort
by all the players to train, play and bring fun to
Springfield Park. Let’s go one step further in
season 2016/17 and do what I do believe we
would have with one ounce of luck – win a
premiership!!!
Team Manager
Roger Gerny
Under 14B Team The Under 14B team was co-captained this year
by Tim Cundall and Sam Leong. They started
the 2015/2016 season extremely strongly with
three close and hard fought wins in the first three
matches.
Unfortunately we had one total washout and two
incomplete matches – where we only bowled on
both occasions. This had a big impact on our
percentage meaning we went into the second
half of the season, and then the finals, in fifth
position on percentage but equal on points with
third and fourth on the ladder.
Despite this, the boys worked really well as a
side and there were some great individual and
team efforts. They were lucky to have the
coaching advice and support of Mark Askham, a
visiting player to the club from England, who
brought a current players perspective to their
games.
The team finished the season in fifth place and
should be very proud of their attitude and
efforts.
Thank you to all the parents for cheerfully
undertaking set-up and scoring duties, and
providing ample amounts of afternoon tea to
sustain the ravenous teenagers!
Particular thanks to Colin Leong and Dave
Allison for assisting with coaching and umpiring
duties.

U14C TEAM The Under 14C girls team had an enjoyable
season under the tutelage of Coach Nick
Fletcher. Fourteen girls represented Box Hill
over the season with a number of them new to
the club. During the season some players went
on to represent Box Hill in senior women’s
cricket with Holly Spencer making her Premier
Firsts debut a highlight.
Although not managing to snare a win, the girls
were competitive in their games. As with other
Friday night fixtures, a number of games were
abandoned due to rain.
There were a number of excellent individual
performances throughout the season.
Congratulations to award winners Holly Spencer
(Batting); Izzy Kinrade (Bowling) and Elizabeth
Jackson (Coaches Award).
U12B TEAM There was one Under 12 team this year playing
in the ECA U12B Grade. The team was roughly
half and half first and second year U12 players.
A number of the players had improved
significantly from their first year in under 12s,
which made for a very interesting team. Many
of the boys have played together from the first
season in under 10s, so the camaraderie amongst
children and parents was fun to be a part of.
We should be very proud of the improvements
made throughout the course of the year, with all
of the boys having their moment in the sun.
Each player’s contributions varied from week to
week, but the commitment to talking and support
for your team mates never did.
The individual performances with bat and ball
will always show up in the “books”, but to
witness some of the catches taken by the boys -
well, they were as good as they get. Some
catches bought tears, as they suddenly realised
their little hands were now stinging! Some of
the close catches held were more surprise on the
faces as they realised they’d managed to hold
on. To see several superb slip catches and
keeper catches taken was very satisfying. We
quickly realised the benefits of having Thomas
at first slip whenever Barney was bowling!
The team also affected many direct hit run outs.
The power in those throws not only surprised the
now out batsmen, but also had a few of our boys
jumping for cover. It’s these special moments
that make being involved even more rewarding.
The main focus was on improving the basic
batting, bowling and fielding skills, but also
starting to teach the boys the strategic parts of
the game and the tactics of captaincy. As usual
at this age, consistency, especially in bowling
extras, was the one thing that let many games
slip out of our reach. However, we did have
some fantastic patches of play which certainly
showed the potential for some successful results
in the future. And we notched up a couple of
fantastic wins for the season.
The trophy winners for the season were Charlie
Leong (coach’s award), Thomas Simmons
(batting) with 130 runs at 43, and Barney
Wickes (bowling) with 15 wickets at 5.13.
Barney also had the most wickets of all teams in
the competition.
All of the boys that represented our U12s played
the game in a manner which Box Hill should be
proud of. I don’t think all our opponent teams
would be able to say the same about their boys.
We teach the skills of the game, but the manner
in which we play was also reinforced. The team
aspect shone through with many of the boys just
as happy for their team-mates’ achievements as
they were their own.
28
A special mention to James Simmons, Colin
Daws and Colin Leong for being the Team
Managers and Cathy Jones for support at
training. These roles play as big a part in the
season as anything. It was my first season as
coach and I had a great time with the boys.
Thank you to all the parents for their support
throughout the season and for scoring, providing
food and making every Saturday morning match
such a delight. It was a pleasure to be involved.
Joshua Martin – Coach
UNDER 10 TEAMS (Green and Gold)
In season 2015/16, the under 10s again fielded
two teams, Green and Gold, with girls and boys
ranging in age from 7 to 10. Each team started
the season with 9 players. As usual, the teams
expanded in numbers as the season progressed,
with Milo Cricketers trying on the whites in the
final few matches of the season in preparation
for next season.
Our littlest Mustangs represented the club with
effort, determination, enjoyment and spirit,
improving markedly during the season. The
enjoyment at taking a first wicket, snaring a
catch or hitting a boundary was celebrated by the
entire team. Milestones in Under 10s are
different to the seniors. With only 2-3 overs
bowled, a three-wicket haul is celebrated like a
5-fer. And with compulsory retirement at 15
runs, scoring 15 is the equivalent of a century,
with 10 runs celebrated like a half-century.
Cartwheels were perhaps a more common form
of celebration than for the seniors!
Throughout the season players worked hard at
training on the all three facets of the game -
batting, bowling and fielding. Batsmen were
encouraged to develop partnerships, be selective
in shot selection, and value their wicket. Players
and coaches focused on consistency with line
and length, whilst bowling and not trying to do
something different with every ball bowled.
Fielding improved as the season progressed,
with some outstanding catches taken in the last
few games.
All team members rotated through the role of
captain, keeper, opening bowler and opening
batsman. The field also rotated around the
keeper every over, so each player had the chance
to field in every position. Players also learned
the unwritten laws of cricket – boxer shorts
won’t hold up your box, never talk to the scorers
and always field first if you win the toss, as 9
year olds don’t concentrate well in the field in
the 3rd
hour of the match!
During the course of the season it was
remarkable to see each player improve. As
confidence grew the ball was bowled quicker
and hit harder to the boundary. Towards the end
of the season the team made significant
improvements running between the wickets,
backing up in the field and encouraging each
other. Amusingly, there were more mankad
attempts this season than any other in recent
memory. (Thanks West Indies.)
As always, the highlights of the season were the
Under 10 Box Hill Derby matches, where Green
played Gold. Matches were tightly contested,
with a win notched up for each team. Another
notable highlight was the Under 10s’ fielding –
some spectacular catches were taken in the
outfield, by keepers, and even several smartly
caught and bowled. The main indicator of
success in under 10s is balls hitting the pitch, so
it was wonderful to see the stats gradually show
a reduction in wides and no balls as the season
progressed.
29
Planning has already begun for the 2016/17
season, with 6 players going up to under 12s and
6 new Milo cricketers already drafted to fill the
two teams.
This season saw some wonderful new coaches
join the under 10 crew, Robert Fortington for
Gold and Andrew Wyver, both highly talented
cricketers themselves. Team managers Hugh
Martin for the Gold team and Janelle Penrose
and Kieran Murphy for the Green team deserve
immense thanks. Finally, to all the parents who
helped out with training night, warm-ups,
scoring and umpiring during the season – a
warm thank-you. It’s such a great bunch of
families. Well done to all.

The 2015/16 BHCC MILO cricket season was
my first as MILO coordinator. I thoroughly
enjoyed the season, this is due to following
reasons:
Group consisted of 20 children, ranging from
years 4-8.
Sessions occurred on Saturday mornings
9:00-10:15 at Box Hill City Oval
What worked well:
Mark Simpson-Parker assisted me for the first
6 sessions, before departing back home to
Austria.
Other BHCC players such as Jordon Smith,
Jarrod Smith and Luke Kukuruzovic assisted
me from time to time in which I was very
grateful for.
MILO parents were incredibly helpful with
operating sessions (gear, setting up etc.)
Junior coordinator Ross Collins was helpful
with providing tips and ways to engage the
children and was helpful at the final MILO
day.
Every kid received their MILO pack at the
correct time.
Many of the older children’ parents
approached me to speak about going to play
under 10’s and beyond at BHCC, good
pathway.
Issues:
Numbers were good, however there were
some sessions with less than usual. Some
occasions as low as 8-10 youngsters.
Some children came and then left during the
season. One participant came once and never
returned and twins left after around four
sessions.
There were around 4-5 sessions in which I
was unassisted by any BHCC player. I did
find the lack of senior support disappointing
on some occasions.
In conclusion:
The MILO season was a success, I enjoyed
being a part of the group. Assistance was good
and the general operation of the season worked
well. At this stage of the year, I intend to be a
part of the MILO In-2-cricket season for 16/17
as either coordinator or assist if another member
of BHCC would like to take up the role of
coordinator.

JG CRAIG U/15 REPRESENTATIVE TEAM
The format for the Inner East Craig Shield
competition this season required Box Hill, Balwyn
and Kew to host a “Road Show” evening for 60
aspiring U15 Craig Shield cricketers and their
parents. At the conclusion of the three road shows,
players need to nominate one club as their Craig
Shield club of choice. This format was introduced to
stop players’ trialing at more than one club at the
same time and to provide certainty for selectors.
30 players, or 50% of the total available nominated
Box Hill as their Craig Shield club of choice which
was a fantastic result for the Club. Thank you to the
following people who assisted towards the successful
Road Show: - Michael Vozzo (Men’s coach),
Andrew Minter (President), Mark Askham, Shannon
Blewitt, Chris Box, Jordan Buckingham, Harry Date,
Roger Gerny, Cameron McMahon, Josh Martin and
Tom Newman.
Two trials were conducted at Top Line Indoor with
the following 13 players selected to play for Box
Hill: -

Abhi Bansal Vermont South RHB
Xavier Bateman North Balwyn RHB, RAM
Jack Beardsley Surrey Hills RHB, RAF

Pre Competition
The team trained on a weekly basis at Box Hill City
Oval. Practice matches were played against Oakleigh
Craig Shield team and the Under 16 Box Hill
Reporter District Cricket Association representative
team. This provided valuable opportunity for many
players to wear cricket spikes and play on turf
wickets for the first time. The team also attended a
very enjoyable and exciting T20 match between
Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades
along with 80,000 plus people at the MCG. A team
“launch night” was enjoyed by players and parents
with Andrew Minter, President and Men’s Club
Coach Michael Vozzo in attendance.
Competition Performance
The team finished 3rd
out of 7 teams with 3 wins, 3
losses and 1 Bye. Our bowling was outstanding with
all bowlers following the team theme of “full and
straight to get through the gate” and statistically our
bowling was ranked first in the competition. Our
bowling was supported by consistent and reliable
fielding with the team theme also being followed i.e.
“you’re a better fielder if at least you’re energetic
and always be engaged with what’s happening!”
However, the team theme for batting was not
fulfilled i.e. “someone in the top 4 needs to be King,
(bat deep) for the day” with 34 being our top
individual score for the competition. Statistically our
batting was ranked 5th
out of 7 teams.
Competition highlights
Game 2 – The team theme “we are never beaten and
can win from any position” was typified when at
8/88 we made 158 versus Endeavour Hills. In Game
3 versus Croydon we batted 45 overs for 9/127 after
being 6/41 – we won both matches which was a
valuable learning experience and provided a lot of
enjoyment for the players. Due to an extreme hot
weather forecast Game 6 was played as a T20 match
versus top team Balwyn at St. James Park,
Hawthorn. Losing the toss and batting first, our 45
over game plan “flew out the window!” e.g. what is
an acceptable target to set for U/15 cricketers, many
who are playing T20 for the first time?, when do we
bat hitters versus accumulators?, bowlers now need
to bowl back of a length instead of full and straight,
captain Josh challenged with new fielding
restrictions, protect the short boundaries. It was an
exciting match and a great effort with a narrow loss
decided with two balls remaining. Game 7 - The
players did themselves and their parents proud by
“putting on a bowling clinic,” dismissing Noble Park
32
for 63 in 38 overs and ensuring the team finished the
competition on a high.

Post competition
Players and parents gathered at Box Hill City Oval
for a post competition get together. The boys trained
on turf with the Box Hill men’s seniors. It was
pleasing to see a number of players wanting to train
with the seniors for the remainder of the season and
five players played at least one senior game for Box
Hill before the season’s end.
Thank you to Richard Gill who was a reliable and
efficient team manager. Richard created a team app.
and memento certificates for the players. To Melissa
Bowyer for providing players with a USB memory
stick of photos and video, and to all parents for their
fantastic support.
Coach’s highlights / observations
Playing the game in the right spirit, 100% effort,
respect, pride and smiles on faces
Learning to adjust from synthetic cricket to turf
cricket; some players for the first time
Playing and adjusting to a different level of
intensity compared to club cricket
Players thinking and adapting for themselves
within a match situation
Players enjoying each other’s company
It was a pleasure to coach a fantastic group of boys,
may there be many fun filled years of successful
cricket to come, good luck and thank you for the
experience.

LIFE MEMBERS
Life membership was bestowed on three Box Hill members this season.
Samuel Morris
Sam arrived at Box Hill in the 2000/01 season and has played 214 club games including 23 Men’s First
games. In that time Sam has been the ultimate clubman. He put his hand up early to assist with the
Junior players being awarded the Don Davis Perpetual award in 2001/02 for his contribution. Sam is
always ready and willing to assist in any role including MC at various Club functions in his own
inimitable style a combination of stand up comic and professional. He has regularly contributed to the
organisation and running social events. He has served on the Committee (Season 2013/14, 2014/15)
where he fulfilled the role as The Director of Men’s Cricket a role to which he brought a keen analytical
mind and a strong opinion. Sam has given a lot to Box Hill CC but we must not forget to acknowledge
his contribution as a player. Prior to sustaining what became a chronic back injury he captured
11 wickets in the 3 finals of the Premiership year of 2006/07.
Nicole Breschkin (neé Smith)
Nicole joined Box Hill in 1997/98 as a teenager and quickly proved herself as a bowler, opening the
bowling in the Women’s Thirds in her first season. She has been a worthy recipient of the Marja van der
Toorren 2006/07 & 2014/15, the Don Davis Award in 2003/04 and the Karen Britton Award in 2006/07 .
A committee member in seasons 2003/04, 04/05 and 14/15, Nicole also was integral in the successful
fight to maintain Box Hill’s residence at Box Hill City Oval when Box Hill Hawks wished to increase
their residence to seven months of the year in 2005 speaking passionately at the Council meeting. Nicole
spent many seasons as Captain of the Women’s Second XI, and then, after retiring, was convinced back
to playing to fill the breach as Captain of the Women’s Third XI, imparting her wisdom and experience
to the young players coming through from our Under 14 girls.
Margaret Pretty
Despite a couple of seasons out of action due to chronic knee problems, Marg has shown longevity in her
playing career being the current Women’s Club games record holder with ????? games and by playing
during the 2015/16 being the sole member of the playing group who transferred from Fitzroy-Doncaster
to Box Hill in 1992/93 to still being actively involved on a semi regular basis as a player. Marg is the
Club games Batting run aggregate holder for the Women’s Seconds XI and spent a number of seasons as
both Women’s Seconds and Third XI Captain. A tear away quick off a rhythmical run up in her younger
years, she still roles her arm over taking 15 wickets this season and the Third XI Bowling trophy.
