How WCPT & IAP defines...

Physiotherapy means physiotherapeutic system ofmedicine which includes examination, treatment,advice and instructions to any person preparatory

to or for the purpose of or in connection withmovement dysfunction, bodily malfunction,physical disorder, disability, healing and pain fromtrauma and disease, physical and mentalconditions using physical agents including

exercises, mobilization, manipulation, mechanicaland electrotherapy, activity and devices ordiagnosis, treatment and prevention

if necessary, will incorporate the results of

laboratory and imaging studies. Such as X-Ray, CT scan, MRI, Radio nucleotide imaging(SPECT, PET), Electro diagnostic Studies

Origin of PHYSIOTHERAPY

In 460 B.C : Physicians like Hippocrates andlater Galenus are believed to have been the firstpractitioners of physical therapy, advocating

massage, manual therapy techniques andhydrotherapy to treat people.

In early 19th century : origins of actual physicaltherapy as a professional group date back toPeter Henrik Ling, Father of SwedishGymnastics, & Mary McMillan, was organizedAPTA.

International Standard Classifications of Occupations:

Physiotherapists are to assess, plan and implement

rehabilitative programs that improve or restore human motorfunctions, maximize movement ability, relieve pain syndromes,

and treat or prevent physical challenges associated with

injuries, diseases and other impairments. They apply a broad

range of physical therapies and techniques such as movement,ultrasound, heating, laser and other techniques. They may

develop and implement programmes for screening and

prevention of common physical ailments and disorders.

The Maharashtra State PT Council has startedfunctioning from 4th Oct.2008 as per the NotificationNo. MIS-2008/6/CR.2/2008/Act Dated 4th Oct. 2008published in Maharashtra Govt. Gazette, videGovernment, Medical Education andDrugs Department.

The Gujarat state assembly passed a bill announcing theformation of the Gujarat State Council forPhysiotherapy- 31st March 2011 (Times of India)
