Google Duplex may eat up call centre jobs, claims reportAt Google I/O 2018, the company showcased the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) when it demon-strated phone conversation between an AI that sounds similar to a human being and an actual person. The technology, called Google Duplex, attracted criticism for allegedly being murky as well as gathered praises for it could ease works like book appointments and make reservations. Now, a report has claimed that some large com-panies are in the very early stages of testing this technology in call centres to answer customer service questions. The development comes 10 days after, a report claimed that the Google’s human-sounding AI was given to be tested by a set of select journal-ists in the US who confirmed that the Assistant does actually introduce itself to the person on the receiving end and also alerts the receiver that the conversation is being recorded. A Google spokesperson told The Information that some “business could be exploring ways to use the technology on their own”. “It’s important that we get the experience right both for the people and for businesses and we’re taking a slow and measured approach as we incorporate learnings and feedback from our tests,” the Google spokes-person was quoted as saying.

Reliance Jio ready with VoWiFi service, expected to debut with JioPhone 2

Mukesh Ambani today announced a host of new services, features and devices at the company’s Annual General Meeting. One of the most prom-inent announcements was unveiling of the Jio-Phone 2. While the device was not demoed, a slide describing some of its features was shown off. A keen observer would have noticed that alongside VoLTE support, the upcoming device will also support VoWiFi. This is in-line with a new report, which suggests that Reliance Jio is done testing its VoWiFi services and it’s ready for deployment, as soon as the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is done with their testing of the service.

As per the report, Jio is ahead of other telcos like Airtel and Vodafone, whose VoWiFi services are said to be still under testing. DoT has pushed the technology for enabling calling over WiFi so that users can make use of public WiFi hotspots for placing calls in areas with patchy or no network connectivity. It is expected that the VoWiFi service will also be enabled on the first generation Jio-Phone. The report further states that the feature will initially be available only while calling another Jio user, however, the functionality will later be rolled out broadly for calling users on other net-works as well.

According to new research from Avast, the global leader in digital security products, almost one fourth (23%) of consumers in India are uncon-cerned about cryptomining malware infecting their personal and smart home devices. Among this group, a 39% mistakenly believe that cryp-tomining malware cannot affect them as they don’t own or mine cryptocurrencies themselves. The research was carried out to better under-stand public perceptions and knowledge of cryptomining – the malicious process of covertly mining cryptocoins using malware planted on an individual’s device. This is despite 77% of respondents admitting that they are familiar with digital currencies.Over the past 12 months, coin-mining malware has evolved in sophistication and breadth. What was once a cyber threat directed towards PCs has fast become a major risk to smartphones and the complex ecosystem of IoT devices. In order to be effective and profitable, cryptom-ining requires large amount of computer power. And since the costs involved in mining are high and the CPU power of PCs and smartphones low, cybercriminals are attempting to hijack networks of connected devices known as botnets to max-imise profit. For victims, this can mean higher

Today, it seems the device has inched towards realisation by another step: the new low-cost Surface tablet was spotted getting certified on the FCC website by WinFuture. Sony cuts prices for Xperia XZs, Xperia L2 and

Xperia R1 in IndiaSony has announced price cuts for some of its existing smartphones in India. The announce-ment came out of the blue and is possibly an effort by the company to get surplus stock out of the way before bringing newer devices into the country. The price cuts will be effective on three Sony smartphones - The Xperia XZs, Xperia L2 and Xperia R1. The Xperia XZs and R1 were launched in India back in 2017, while the Xperia L2 was launched in the country back in February this year. With the price alterations, the Xperia XZs will be available in India for Rs 31,990 as opposed to its previous price of Rs 41,990. The Xpe-ria XZs features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB of RAM. It is available in two storage options - 32GB and 64GB. The device comes boxed with Android N on-board, but users can update the same to Android Oreo as Sony has made the update available for the device. The smartphone features Sony’s trade-marked Motion Eye camera system, with a 19MP lense at the back. The camera is capable of pre-dictive autofocus, 960 fps slo-mo videos, 4K and HDR recording. In our review of the Xperia XZs, we noted that the phone “is well optimised for good performance. Alongside, it presents a compact, ergonomic build, a bright and vibrant display and a fairly decent camera. The battery life is the only element that is comparatively weak, but still lasts for an entire work day”. The Xperia XZs houses a 2,900 mAh battery.

Intel has launched the Xeon E line of processors which are set to replace the older E3 v6 Kaby Lake

based CPUs. These entry-level CPUs are based off the Coffee Lake architecture and are using the 14nm++ process node. Intel did rename their entire Xeon Scalable lineup last year to do away with the complicated nomenclature but these new entry-level CPUs don’t fall within the same family. All CPUs launched use the LGA1151 socket. 10 processors with varying core configurations but they all support dual-channel DDR4-2666 ECC and non-ECC UDIMM modules and offer 16 PCIe lanes. The chipset offers 24 lanes bringing the total count to 40 PCIe lanes. Here’s the SKU stack. The E prefix against all the CPU numbers indi-cates that they’re all entry-level SKUs and the ones with the G suffix indicate the presence of Intel UHD Graphics 630. The base frequency for the integrated graphics is 350 MHz and peaks at 1200 MHz. All CPUs sport the same IGP. There are three non-hyperthreaded CPUs and the rest are all Hyperthreaded. The SKU stack starts off from the 4-core/4-thread Intel Xeon E-2124 and is lead by the 6-core/12-thread Intel Xeon E-2186G at the top.

Poulton is an expert in the design of deceptively simple-looking mass-produced objects. This one here is a fast external hard drive and while the company claims maximum speeds of 110MB/s, in our testing we found that it can go beyond that hitting the 130MB/s mark. We tested the drive on standard benchmarks like CrystalD-iskMark and ATTO Disk where it showed off its read speed, as fast as 138-140MB/s with similar write speed capabilities. Sure this isn’t as fast as an SSD, but this is exceptionally good for an external drive.Considering that this drive comes with a USB Type-C port, it also doesn’t need any external source of power making it convenient to carry almost anywhere.
