McAfee, the device-to-cloud cybersecurity com-pany released Winning the Game, a new report investigating key challenges facing IT security organizations in terms of threats, technology investment and skills required to win the fight against cyberthreats. The survey revealed that concerted efforts to increase job satisfaction, automation in the Security Operations Center (SOC) and gamification in the workplace are key to beating cybercriminals at their own game. The landscape for cyberthreats is growing, both in complexity and volume. According to the report, 46 % of respondents believe that in the next year they will either struggle to deal with the increase of cyberthreats or that it will be impossible to defend against them. Further complicating the dynamics of the competition between security responder and cybercriminal

Vertiv has been selected to join the Ericsson Energy Alliance, a competitive ecosystem and management interface that aims to increase market share and top-line growth while evolv-ing access networks towards 5G. The long-term agreement builds on the strength of the Vertiv global reach, unique product competence and service delivery, along with the speed and flexi-bility provided by its first-class research, design and engineering teams. The Alliance is part of the Ericsson Radio Site System, which comprises all of the site infrastruc-ture components required to provide network performance and operational efficiency to the mobile operator. The partnership allows Ericsson to compete more forcefully, broadening the port-folio with increased access to new technologies, strengthening the regional sales support, and establishing a consistent ecosystem to support telecom access networks and 5G deployments. The Alliance also allows Ericsson and Vertiv to engage closely in strategic product portfolio planning and development, with expected syner-gies in research and design, and time to market.

is the cybersecurity skills crisis. Survey respon-dents believe they need to increase their IT staff by nearly a quarter (24%) in order to manage the threats their organizations are currently facing, while 84 percent admit it is difficult to attract talent and 31 % say they do not actively do any-thing to attract new talent.“With cybersecurity breaches being the norm for organizations, we have to create a work-place that empowers cybersecurity responders to do their best work,” said Grant Bourzikas, chief information security officer at McAfee. “Consider that nearly a quarter of respondents say that to do their job well, they need to increase their teams by a quarter, keeping our workforce engaged, educated and satisfied at work is critical to ensuring organizations do not increase complexity in the already high-stakes game against cybercrime.”

Through the Ericsson Energy Alliance, Vertiv is providing a broad range of custom-made OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) power sys-tems and enclosures, including solar hybrid solu-tions for off-grid or bad-grid sites. In addition, this is complemented by the Vertiv global prod-uct, solution and service offerings to meet any regional requirements.Nishant Batra, Head of Product Area Network Infrastructure, Ericsson, says: “Network evo-lution begins at the site. This is a true comple-mentary partnership. We have a long history with Vertiv and we know that we can count on their deep expertise, strong portfolio and global footprint. The alliance members are combining the best of their radio site technology, skills, and abilities to bring a broadened, more flexible, and competitive portfolio to the table to help ser-vice providers in their 5G evolution through the Ericsson Radio System. We continue to onboard suppliers for additional product categories with sharp focus on sustainable energy. Service pro-viders want and demand seamless evolution. The Ericsson Energy Alliance helps to provide that.”

Trend Micro India Announces MDF In Channel Partner Day

SUSE Cloud Application Platform Certified by Cloud Foundry Founda-tion, Brings Advanced Cloud Foundry Productivity to Modern Kuber-

netes Infrastructure

A global leader in cyber security solutions, announced its Annual Channel Partner Day event recently in Shimla. During the event the com-pany unveiled its latest strategic products and solutions and shared market and sales insights. The three day event witnessed engaging ses-sions delving on areas such as, the global threat landscape, on securing the connected world and an update on the partner program initiatives by Trend Micro. As part of the partner program update, the event saw the roll-out of a very comprehensive channel program, one which will ‘reward partners’ who have demonstrated good technical capability to deploy and service their customers, among other parameters. Trend Micro announced the MDF (Marketing Development Fund) for their partner community who are in the Gold and Plat-inum category, depending upon the revenue that they achieve, thereby enabling a collaborative market development activity. The company has

SUSE Cloud Application Platform has been desig-nated a Certified Cloud Foundry distribution by the Cloud Foundry Foundation. The newly certi-fied platform brings the advanced productivity of the Cloud Foundry model to Kubernetes, which is rapidly becoming the de facto standard for mod-ern container infrastructure. One of two certified Cloud Foundry software offerings, SUSE Cloud Application Platform is built with SUSE Linux Enterprise and backed directly by SUSE®, and it is the only distribution delivered via 100 percent open source software. It lets organizations lever-age their investment in Kubernetes infrastructure and expertise to ease Cloud Foundry implemen-tation and fast-track DevOps and modern applica-tion delivery initiatives.SUSE is also releasing functional enhancements to SUSE Cloud Application Platform, including sup-port for public cloud Kubernetes infrastructure that will speed customer time to value on public

already rolled out the ‘rebate program’ for part-ners, wherein their top focused partners, across Gold, Platinum and Silver categories are eligible for a rebate, depending upon the revenue they achieve, which would be over and above the mar-gins that they make. Apart from this, there would also be sales incentives for individual sellers from the partner organizations, depending upon the strategic solution offered. Trend Micro is also enrolling partners for Profes-sional Services, who would be involved in deploy-ment, service and supporting customers. To fur-ther enable their partners, they are also launch-ing the ‘Product Cloud’ platform. Trend Micro will make the ‘Product Cloud’ accessible for most of their focused channel partners, so that they can use their products which are deployed in cloud, helping them demonstrate the product capabili-ties to all their customers.Speaking on significance of the event, Nilesh Jain, Vice President – South East Asia and India,

clouds and new backup/restore capabilities to help users protect or migrate their Cloud Foundry envi-ronment.“Bridging open source communities, SUSE is bring-ing together the best of Cloud Foundry and Kuber-netes technologies to create compelling new value for our customers,” said Thomas Di Giacomo, SUSE Chief Technology Officer. “SUSE’s continu-ing leadership as a provider of software-defined infrastructure and application delivery solutions is reflected in the innovation contained in SUSE Cloud Application Platform. Our Cloud Foundry certification signifies the importance to SUSE of interoperability across Cloud Foundry platforms and our commitment to upstream Cloud Foundry development.”One of SUSE’s application delivery solutions, SUSE Cloud Application Platform is used by software development and operations teams to streamline lifecycle management of traditional and new cloud

Trend Micro, commented, “We have been grow-ing very fast and the last year has been one of the fastest growing year for us. Most of the growth came from across our product line, whether it was Endpoint security, Cloud security or Net-work defense security. We wanted to recognize the fact, that this growth would not have been possible without the support from our channel/partner ecosystem. They were there when we wanted to bridge the solution with customer, during deployment & servicing, as well as during post-support instances. This channel event is all about thanking them for all the support that they have extended to us all through the year, as well as to plan for the next 1 to 2 years strategy of working together.” “In the light of how customer expectations are changing very rapidly, in terms of how security services are to be delivered and how ROI has to be measured, it’s important for partners to look at engaging with the right set of vendors. Firstly, a vendor who understand CIO’s and CSO’s mind-set, and are trying to customize their offerings with the requirements of the customer. Secondly, a partner who can stand long-term with them and finally a vendor who is channel oriented. These are essentially the three criteria’s that partners should look for in their vendors”, he further added. Nilesh in his keynote session on ‘Global Threat landscape and Trend Micro Direction’ also stressed on how Trend Micro is helping CIO’s and CSO’s, who are faced with a limited budget, to put back their critical assets in this complex envi-ronment. An environment where they are trying to adapt to Big Data, AI, Machine Learning and Robotics, while moving their Severs to Cloud.

native applications. Unlike other Cloud Foundry offerings, SUSE Cloud Application Platform pack-ages SUSE Cloud Foundry as a containerized dis-tribution, managed by Kubernetes. This simplifies SUSE Cloud Foundry deployment and manage-ment, dramatically reduces its memory footprint, and makes the platform more accessible to exist-ing Kubernetes users. The new Cloud Foundry certification complements existing Kubernetes certification of SUSE Cloud Application Platform. It provides customers with verified protection against Cloud Foundry vendor lock-in and assur-ance that the platform will remain current with Cloud Foundry advancements.Abby Kearns, Executive Director of The Cloud Foundry Foundation said, “SUSE continues to push our community to think and move in new and excit-ing directions. The recently certified SUSE Cloud Application Platform expands the Cloud Foundry ecosystem, creating more choice for enterprises.”

Could Blockchain Stop PNB like Frauds? – Authored by Ms. Mohua Sengupta, EVP & Global Head of Services, 3i Infotech Ltd

Ever since the Punjab National Bank Fraud case has come to light, many believers of Blockchain have been saying that Blockchain could have stopped it. Present company included. I for one, very truly believe that Blockchain will become pervasive and not too far away. But could it have avoided this huge fraud that has shaken the Indian Banking system? Well it’s hard to respond in the affirmative knowing that no technology is smarter than the human brain at its best. If the intent is wrong, loopholes are found or made. Just as in this case. What was the main reason behind this fraud? While there were multiple, like mal-intent of account holders, corrupt employees, audit fail-ure, manual contracts etc., the key reason was unintegrated applications, i.e, the SWIFT gate-way was not integrated with PNB’s Core Bank-ing System. So transferring data from one to the other was a manual process! When money was

lent by foreign branches of other Indian banks, based on the false LOU issued by PNB, no record was being made in the banks CBS. Thus year after year, the fraud remained under cover.Could Blockchain have solved it? Well the answer is yes and no. Blockchain definitely has much higher security capability built-in. The basic con-cept underlying Blockchain, is Distributed Ledger Technology or DLT. So the master data is main-tained in every node of the distributed ledger and hence there is no dependence on a single source of truth. While today the banks CBS is the sin-gle source of truth for the bank, in a Distributed Ledger framework, each node would contain the same truth. So tampering one node would not be possible and would immediately bring to light any kind of malpractice. So technically speaking Blockchain technology does have security mecha-nisms to deal with these frauds. However the suc-cess of this would depend on how distributed the ledgers are and how big the chains are. Anytime there is a gap or a break between the chains, or two or more chains are not integrated, demand-ing a human intervention, mistakes or fraud are likely to happen. So whether or not Blockchain technology could have stopped the PNB fraud, would depend on how integrated the Blockchain was. So even in a Blockchain scenario if the Bank and the SWIFT payment gateway were not con-

nected by a single chain or two integrated chains and had it required a manual intervention, the problem couldn’t have been avoided inspite of Blockchain technology. So Blockchain technology alone, is not an answer to avoiding such problem, intentional or not. The most critical requirement is for all stakeholders to be part of the Block-chain, with no breakage in the chain. There are a few other necessary conditions to the success of Blockchain as well:All Manual contracts of today will have to be converted into smart contracts to run some auto-mated checks on them, whenever there is any transaction involving a contract.Since the security will be so much dependent on the technology itself, technology audits will have to become much more stringent and pervasiveFinally in order for all stakeholders, no matter which industry they belong to, need to come together as part of the same or connected Block-chain, there needs to be common processes and protocols accepted and agreed on by regulators of all industries. Hence the Regulators need to come together to ensure the same.So bottom line is no technology can eradicate fraud. People are much smarter than computers, being the inventors of all technology. And people with mal- intent will be there. So while Blockchain has the technology built-in to improve security, it is definitely not the answer to all fraud.

SMBs improve chances of better market access & profitabili-ty by three times with high cloud usage: Microsoft & TARI

In a study to measure the social and economic impact of cloud usage among 275 SMBs across 11 Indian cities*, Microsoft and the Thought Arbi-trage Research Institute (TARI) found that small and medium sized companies (SMBs) improved their chances of better market access and profit-ability by three times with high use of cloud tech-nologies. The study captured data showing sig-nificant increase in market reach, improvement in employee productivity and operational pro-cesses, and an improvement in work-life balance as a direct correlation of increased cloud usage. CEOs in SMBs said, the use of cloud technolo-gies helped their companies with the flexibility of technology usage and by extension in carry-ing out business operations. They also said that cloud technologies helped them better control over business and people processes. The study has, through a regression-based approach, established an empirical relationship predicting probability of impact on socio-eco-nomic indicators in relation to change in the level of cloud adoption. Overall, the study suggests that there is a greater than 75% possibility that an SMB adopting cloud will see improvement in different metrics within a period of two years of being on the cloud.Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India, said, “The CEOs of these companies have seen the positive value and high impact of cloud tech-

nologies in transforming their businesses. The findings of this study reiterate the power of dig-ital transformation. At Microsoft we are deeply committed to empower every organisation and every individual to achieve more. We are partner-ing organizations in their unique transformation journeys, with each one contributing to an eco-system of innovation led growth.”Reduction in operating expenses and improve-ment in cash flow is seen to be a significant ben-efit of cloud adoption. SMBs can have improved cash flows of up to 308% due to the dexterity and flexibility enabled by cloud usage. 96% of SMBs find a positive impact on their operating expenses within two years of cloud use, which remains stable with time. Security, business con-tinuity and risk management are other areas of importance. 86% of SMBs believe that cloud is a secure platform and that they experienced less risk of loss of confidential information.According to Selva Ramanujan, Director, Mont-Bleu Technologies, on their experience with cloud technologies, “Online productivity and collabo-ration tools are a very good solution for SMBs. They allow us to focus on business and not waste funds on acquiring or upgrading IT assets; we can divert the funds to core business activities. Also, upkeep and maintenance of an on-premise solu-tion requires more funds on manpower and other overheads. Security has to be beefed up literally

every day to safeguard our information if we use our own datacenters. All of this is not a problem anymore as our mails and files are saved on the Cloud.”A very key aspect is the personal development that is experienced by the SMB owner. With greater work-life flexibility SMBs showed a movement towards personal development as well. While there was no conclusive evidence of upwards social mobility, there was a definitive heightened focus on employee development. Around 94% of SMBs had an increase in number of skilled employees, with less investment, within two years of high cloud usage. They were also willing to invest more in their upskilling and over-all development, which in turn also led to higher retention.Commenting on his experience, Dr. Senthilku-mar U, Founderk & CEO, Bioline Laboratory, said, “Moving to Cloud is the best solution if you require IT infrastructure for running your business. Since adopting Cloud technologies few years back, we have decreased our capital expen-diture in accumulating high-end hardware and resources. Data availability is ensured with ser-vice level agreements and we have access to the same IT infrastructure and suite of services that large companies have, which allows us to com-pete better. Bioline is looking forward to a huge growth enabled by the Cloud.”
