Dear reader, Welcome to a new edition of Infosylva. We open this edition with a report on the conferring, by the Jamaican Forestry Department, of Forest Heroes awards on two individuals and two organizations for their outstanding contributions to increasing, conserving and protecting Jamaica’s forests. (In English) The Spanish Minister of Industry announced the release next November of two reports about the future of renewable energy sources in Spain, including bioenergy. Not only could wood-based bioenergy contribute to a renewable and cleaner energy supply in most rural areas of the Spanish Mediterranean region, it could also contribute to the active prevention of major forest fires. (In Spanish) In a study published in Science this month, a group of researchers has attempted, for the first time, to inventory the trees of the Amazon. The Amazon forest, which spans 6 million square kilometres across nine countries, contains about 390 billion trees belonging to 16 000 species. (In English and French) A special edition of Biological Conservation, which presents papers from an academic conference on ecological restoration, suggests that a functioning forest ecosystem comprises much more than trees. To be successful, ecological restoration needs to be planned and implemented at the landscape scale. (In English) A regional project in Algeria, carried out with German development assistance, highlights the importance of the forest sector in boosting the economies of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries by creating jobs while maintaining forests as vital environmental resources. Abrimos esta edición con un artículo sobre la entrega del premio «Héroes del bosque», que el Departamento Forestal de Jamaica ha concedido a dos personas y a dos organizaciones que han sido galardonadas por sus acciones destacadas a favor de la ampliación, conservación y protección de los bosques de Jamaica. (En Inglés) El Ministro de Industria español ha anunciado la publicación, en noviembre de 2013, de dos informes acerca del futuro que presentan en España las fuentes de energía renovable, incluida la bioenergía. La bioenergía derivada de la madera podría contribuir no solo a un suministro renovable y más limpio de energía en la mayoría de las zonas de la región mediterránea española, sino también desempeñar una función importante en la prevención activa de los grandes incendios forestales. (En Español) En un estudio que la revista Science publica este mes, se comunica que un grupo de investigadores ha intentado realizar el primer inventario de los árboles del Amazonas. El bosque amazónico tiene una dimensión de 6 millones de kilómetros cuadrados, se extiende por nueve países y contiene alrededor de 390 000 millones de árboles que pertenecen a 16 000 especies. (En Inglés y Francés) Un número especial de Biological Conservation que recoge las ponencias presentadas en una conferencia académica sobre la restauración ecológica, indica que un ecosistema forestal plenamente funcional comprende muchos otros elementos además de los árboles. Para dar resultados satisfactorios, la restauración ecológica debe planificarse y aplicarse a escala del paisaje. (En Inglés) Un proyecto regional realizado en Argelia y llevado a cabo con la asistencia del Organismo Alemán para el Desarrollo ha puesto de relieve la importancia del sector forestal como impulsor de las economías de los países del Mediterráneo y el Medio Oriente. El sector forestal es creador de empleos, y el mantenimiento forestal se considera una medida indispensable porque el bosque representa un recurso medioambiental vital. Nous ouvrons cette édition avec un article concernant l'attribution par le Département des forêts de la Jamaïque, du prix « héros forestiers » à deux personnes et deux organisations pour leurs contributions exceptionnelles à l'augmentation, la conservation et la protection des forêts de la Jamaïque. (En anglais) Le ministre espagnol de l'Industrie a annoncé la publication, en novembre prochain, de deux rapports sur l'avenir des sources d'énergie renouvelables en Espagne, y compris le bois énergie. Non seulement pourrait le bois énergie contribuer à un approvisionnement en énergie renouvelable et plus propre dans la plupart des zones rurales de la région méditerranéenne espagnole, mais sa récolte pourrait également jouer un rôle important dans la prévention active de grands incendies de forêt. (En espagnol) Dans une étude publiée dans Science ce mois-ci, un groupe de chercheurs a tenté, pour la première fois, d'inventorier les arbres de l'Amazonie. La forêt amazonienne, qui couvre 6.000.000 de km carrés dans neuf pays, contient environ 390 milliards d'arbres appartenant à 16000 espèces. Implementing the non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests After several years of negotiation, the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) adopted, in May 2007,

the Non-legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forests, commonly known as the Forest Instrument. This international consensus was reached to boost the implementation of sustainable forest management (SFM) and thus to maintain and enhance the economic, social and environmental values of all types of forests for the benefit of present and future generations. This publication intends to provide a coherent overarching framework for operationalizing those internationally agreed policies and measures for achieving sustainable forest management (SFM). Invasive alien plants in the forests of Asia and the Pacific This book provides the first-ever collation of invasive alien plants threatening the forests of Asia-Pacific. It identifies the native region, current distributions, habitats, threats and damage associated with 111 species of invasive alien plants. Information on uses and methods of management are also provided. Each plant is illustrated with multiple colour photos and a map of its current geographic distribution. This publication can assist countries to investigate current and prospective pathways of invasions and plan ahead.

Road to legality Through the conclusion of Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) with the EU, timber producing countries commit to assuring legality of their timber. Cameroon is among the first countries in the process of turning its stated commitment into effective action. FLEGT licenses issued under the VPA will assure consumers that the timber they are buying is legal. Towards a development strategy for the wood processing industry in the Congo Basin The recently launched White paper “Towards a development strategy for the wood processing industry in the Congo Basin” brings together a series of reflections and suggestions for the development and implementation of strategies to develop the forest industry in the Congo Basin. For the Central African Forests Commission (COMIFAC), the White Paper could expedite the implementation of previous commitments, including the Convergence Plan. For the private sector, it could serve as a baseline to review where progress needs to be made and sustainability embedded.
