It would seem the ceilingfan is the bane of a designer'sexistence, especially if onelends creedence to televi-sion's slew of interior design-ers. When such designersprepare to overhaul a room, the ceiling fan is often thefirst item to go.

Although there are cer-tainly ceiling fans that aren'tthe ideal decorating center-piece, are they all an eye-sore? Most people wouldagree not. Plus, ceiling fanscan provide an invaluableservice in the home; theycan help moderate a room'stemperature whether it iswinter or summer and useless energy for heating and

cooling.Whether homewoners love

or hate ceiling fans, there areways to develop a relation-ship of compromise with thewhirling wonder. Considerthese design tips for workingwith fans.

* Explore the different fanoptions. Ceiling fan designsof today are not what theyused to be. For thoseinstalling or replacing a ceil-ing fan, choose a sleek stylethat matches the wood trimsin the home. Or consider afan that simply fades into thebackground and is not a focalpoint at all.

* Swap out the bulbs andshades. Part of what makes

many ceiling fans unsightlyare the bulbs and coveringson the bulbs. These may befloral or frosted glass.Generally country in style, ceiling fans clash with manyhomeowners' styles. One canpurchase replacement bulbsand shades if the goal is tosimply make the fan lookbetter without a majorreplacement.

* Blades and brass. Manyhomes are outfitted withceiling fans reminiscent ofthe 1980s. That means theycould be full of brass accentsand blades that featuredesigns or inlaid bamboopatchwork. Whatever thecase, these looks do notblend in with today's moreupscale styles. Disassemblethe fan, replacing the bladesand simply spray paintingthe hardware to cover up thegaudiness of brass.

* Loud and proud. If it's thenoise generated from theceiling fan that is more of anuisance than its look, it maybe time to replace the fan. There could be a mechanicalproblem or the ceiling fanmight be coated with accu-mulated dust. The fan shouldnot detract from a person'squality of life.

* Dangling eyesore. Thepull chains for a ceiling fancan be distracting andunsightly. Many fans nowcome with remote controls, eliminating the need for pullstrings. Also, a homeownercan consider eliminatingexisting strings and simplyuse a light switch to controlthe fan. HI108753

Modern Retro Design

By Tresa Erickson

Retro is all the rage in interiordesign, and while some folks mightprefer authentic designs, othersmight be looking for designs with amodern edge. They might like thelook of things past, but want themto be fresh and equipped to func-tion in today's world. The result ismodern retro design.

Color is key to modern retrodesign. Popular hues hark back tothe 1950s and 1960s and includeaqua, blue, mint green, pink, red, turquoise and yellow. Black andwhite checkerboard patterns arehot, especially when set against alemony yellow or firehouse redbackdrop.

Materials also hark back to thosedecades and run the gamut fromlaminates and linoleum to polishedchrome and vinyl. Furniture madeof molded plastic or plywood, for

example, might rest on top of abrightly colored vinyl floor. Tablesmight be round, even kidney-shaped. Chair styles indicative ofmodern retro design include thebutterfly chair, the diamond loungechair, the Eames lounge chair, thegrasshopper chair and the tulipchair.

Kitsch is huge in modern retrodesign, with jukeboxes, collectiblesand vintage Hawaiian or tiki decoroften appearing. Hundreds of retroaccessories have become availablefor use, all with a modern touch, including lava lamps and starburst-shaped clocks.

While modern retro design takesits cues mostly from the 1950s to1960s, some designers have startedlooking beyond that era and areincorporating touches of the 1970sand 1980s. The result is rooms dec-orated in shades of avocado green, burnt orange, chocolate brown andharvest gold or mossy blues, graysand pinks. White-on-white colorschemes are common, as are wall-papers with wild, large-scale prints.Wicker, leather and metal are com-mon materials for fixtures and fur-niture, and tile and shag carpetingfor flooring.

Whatever the preferred timeperiod, modern retro design basi-cally involves taking elements andtrends of the past and reworkingthem for today's lifestyles. Thelooks of yesteryear are coming backinto play, with a twist for comfortand convenience.
