Reading a Thermometer

Page 2: Brought to you by powerpointpros.com Reading a Thermometer

The temperature tells us how hot or how cold something is.

What is Temperature?

Page 3: Brought to you by powerpointpros.com Reading a Thermometer

Temperature is measured in degrees. The symbol for degrees is °.

So “45°” means the same thing as“45 degrees.”

Measuring Temperature

Page 4: Brought to you by powerpointpros.com Reading a Thermometer

Temperature is measured using two scales: Celsius and Fahrenheit.

The letter C is the symbol for the Celsius scale.

The letter F is the symbol for the Fahrenheit scale. The Fahrenheit scale is very common in the United States.

A thermometer is an instrument that is used to measure temperature.

What is a Thermometer?

Page 8: Brought to you by powerpointpros.com Reading a Thermometer

This is a thermometer. The letter and degree symbol at the top tell us whether the thermometer measures temperature using Fahrenheit (F) or Celsius (C).

The numbers on the side and the lines on the thermometer help us figure out what temperature is being displayed. The red bar moves up or down depending on the temperature.

Page 10: Brought to you by powerpointpros.com Reading a Thermometer

Since the red bar lines up with the number 90, that tells us that the temperature is 90 degrees Fahrenheit (90°F).

However, on this thermometer, not all of the lines are numbered. What if the temperature bar doesn’t line up with a marked line?

Usually, the lines on a thermometer count by twos. To make sure that they do on this thermometer, let’s start at 70 and count by twos for each line until we reach 80.

Since when we counted by twos, our last number (80) matched up with the number 80 that was marked on the thermometer, we know that this thermometer does count by twos!

Since we know that on this thermometer, each line counts by twos, we can figure out the temperature!

We can see that the red bar on this thermometer is higher than 80 but lower than 90, we’ll start at 80 and count by twos until we reach the top of the red bar.

We counted by twos until we reached the top of the red bar on the thermometer. Since it lines up with 86-degree mark, the temperature shown on this thermometer is 86 degrees Fahrenheit!

Sometimes, the red bar lines up in between two lines on the thermometer.

Since we know that this thermometer counts by twos, we need to find out which two temperature lines the red bar is in between.

Page 19: Brought to you by powerpointpros.com Reading a Thermometer

The red bar is just above the 80-degree mark. If we count by twos to the next line, we can see that the red bar is just below the 82-degree mark. So, we just need to find the number that’s in between 80 and 82…

81!The temperature shown on this thermometer is 81 degrees Fahrenheit, since the lines on this thermometer count by twos and the red bar is in between the 80 and 82 marks.

The red bar already lines up perfectly with the line marked “50”, so the temperature on this thermometer is 50 degrees Fahrenheit (50°F).

We can now see that the red bar lines up with the 12-degree mark, which means that the temperature on this thermometer is 12 degrees Celsius (12°C)

For this one, the red bar doesn’t stop right on a numbered line, so let’s first make sure that the lines on this thermometer count by twos!

?

Now that we know that the lines do count by twos, we can count by twos starting at 10 until we reach the line that’s at the top of the red bar.

Since the red bar stops right in between 58- and 60-degree marks, the temperature shown on this thermometer is right in between them: 59 degrees Fahrenheit (59°F).

60?

Let’s first make sure that the lines on this thermometer count by twos.

Since we know that they do, we can now see that the red bar stops in between the 58- and 60-degree marks. So, the temperature must be between those two numbers…

Now, we can see that the temperature on this thermometer is 38 degrees Celsius (38°C).

Let’s make sure that the lines on this thermometer also count by twos.

They do! We can see that the red bar stops in between 30 and 40 degrees, so, we can count by twos starting at the 32-degree mark until we get to the line where the bar stops.

Now that we’ve practiced reading thermometers together quite a bit, why don’t you try reading thermometers on your own?
