The Brownwood Juneteenth celebration is scheduled to take place on June 17 &18 and will offer loads of fun for all ages. The event will take place at CecilHolman Park at 1100 Hall Street & the Bennie Houston Community Center at505 Cordell in Brownwood. This year’s event features a free concert by the RobHolbert Group.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending ofslavery in the United States.

In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions arejoining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped andcontinues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions andexperiences of others, only then can we make significant and lastingimprovements in our society.

Brent began working for the Texas Department of Public Safety in Brownwood inFebruary 1981 as a Communications Operator and remained with DPS until September 2006 when the local DPS Communications office wasclosed.Brent has been the Emergency Management Coordinator for Brown County since April 2008. He served 23 years with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office and retired in2008 as Lieutenant overseeing the training academy and crime prevention divisions. George taught law enforcement studentsat the Brazoria County Law Enforcement Academy and Brazosport College.George bought property in Brown County in 2006 and moved here in January 2009 after retirement. Plans are already underway for the 2011-12 Leadership program. The first session (to beheld on September 1 from 9 AM to 3 PM) will feature a discussion of leadership, exam-ples and even some activities to demonstrate the principles. Leadership Brownwood features nine sessions, each with a specific topic and location.Sessions are generally held on the first or second Thursday each month from Septemberthrough April from 9 AM to 3 PM. The Cost is $395 and includes transportation to toursites and lunch. Brian Kight was recently appointed to serve the unexpired term ofJan Cate who resigned citing work and scheduling conflicts.Brian’s term will expire March 31, 2013 and he will be eligible forelection to a full three-year term, if desired.

Brian was born at Camp Zama Japan in 1958 but was primarilyraised in Virginia, later living in France, back to Virginia and thenSlingerlands, New York. He moved to Texas in 1983, where hisfamily had ties. From 1985-1995, he was an officer in the U.S.Army Reserves assigned to the 980th Engineer Battalion as aBattalion Signal Officer, then as the Battallion S-1 (PersonnelOfficer), and finally as a Company Commander.

Brian graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Computer Science and aconcentration in Applied Math. After college he worked for 12 years as a computer pro-grammer and system analyst in Breckenridge, Texas, including 2 years self-employeddoing computer training/support. For the past 15 years he has worked for TSTC WestTexas and currently, for the past 3+ years, has served as the Associate Vice President forEnrollment at the TSTC West Texas campus in Brownwood.

His family consists of one brother who is a professor in the French department atHaverford College ( just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ). Hobbies include hikingand camping, photography, soccer, the Discovery Channel, the Learning Channel, and theHistory Channel.

Previous community involvement has been approximately 10 years as coach, referee, andboard member of the Stephens County Soccer Association, board member and secretaryfor the Breckenridge Library and board member of the Breckenridge Chamber ofCommerce. His current community involvement is as a founding member of the BrownCounty Education/Workforce Solutions Committee.

When asked why he is interested in serving on the Chamber Board, Brian quoted firstMargaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens canchange the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." In addition, he subscribes tothis Arnold Hiatt quote: "Our nation will succeed or fail to the degree that all of us citizensand businesses alike are active participants in building strong, sustainable and enrichingcommunities.”Please join us in welcoming Brian Kight to the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

Brownwood Rodeo Parade Set forSaturday, June 11

The 48th annual Brown County Rodeo is underway, and a major component to the eventis the annual Rodeo Parade. This year’s parade is scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 11th at 10am and will travelthrough Downtown Brownwood. Participants in the parade should begin lining up at8:30am for award judging at the Brownwood Coliseum. Awards will be presented forbest in-town float, best out of town float, riding club awards, best decorated vehicles,best antique vehicles, best horse drawn vehicles, and best bikes/unicycle. BrownwoodMayor Stephen Haynes will also select one entry for the Mayor’s Choice Award. Brown County Fair Association (BCFA) announced that Barbara Boyd Stewart has beenchosen as the 2011 rodeo parade grand marshal. Barbara has been involved with theBCFA since 1973 where she has served in many different capacities through the yearsboth on and off the board of directors.

This year’s Brown County Rodeo will take place June 9, 10, and 11 at the Earl Q.Wilson Arena and is produced by Terry Walls featuring Slim Garner as this year’s rodeoclown and Randy Turner as announcer.
