BU welcomes foreign students

Bicol University is fast achieving its dream

of becoming a research university through the persistent efforts of the Research and Development Center (RDC), as evidenced by the numerous activities it has held in the past few months. On July 25 and 26, RDC held Mind to Market: A Discussion on the Commercialization of Investigatory Projects (IPs) generated by faculty researchers of the university, where Dr. Richard Cahoon, expert/consultant of the International Intellectual Property Institute and

The Philippine Higher Education Roadmap challenges state universities to level up their standards towards internationally recognized practices while nurturing local innovations. We are shaping our efforts in resource generation along this roadmap. Hence, our IGPs are moving towards Intellectual Property licensing, the prerequisite of which is patenting and trademark registration. In-House ReviewOn July 26, RDC conducted the 1st R&D Seminar Series and 25th Bicol University In-House Review of Completed Researches. During the opening program, BU President Fay M. Lauraya congratulated the faculty who had accomplished their research work and were presenting them that day. “Ideas,” according to

Cahoon...her, “is how all products and services in the market begin.” This she expounded on as she sought to encourage more BU faculty to engage in research in their respective fields of specialization. The seminar featured two research experts from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), Dr. Vicente Paqueo and Dr. Aniceto Orbeta, who both spoke on the seminar theme “Responding to the Challenges and Prospects of Education and Social Development.”

Fifty-one researches were presented as completed during the In-House Review held after the lectures, spread along four thematic areas, namely: Climate Change and Natural Resources Management; Global Competitiveness of Business and Industry; and Social Development Promotion, Institutional and Policy Research. These were evaluated as paper and/or poster presentations. Winners of Best Paper and Best Poster Awards will be announced at a later date. (Ma. Celina G. Meneses/OP)

identified and placed the foreign students in foster homes who have volunteered to host a student for the duration of their stay. The integration of the international students in BU expands global understanding for both parties, becoming solid preparation for them to live, work and lead in a diverse global society.

BU students are also prepared for global learning through opportunities for intensive dialogue with the foreign students who have different backgrounds and beliefs, thereby allowing significant intercultural understanding and acceptance. (Marie Madelaine A. Bongais/GLO@BU)

Eleven graduate programs and one undergraduate program underwent evaluation under the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities of the

Philippines (AACCUP) on July 2 to 5. Six units offering graduate programs under the BU Graduate School joined forces to have the following programs evaluated at various levels: CAL-MA Filipino, MA Literature, and Ph.D Filipino (1st survey); CBEM-Ph.D Development Management (1st survey) and MA Economics (Preliminary); CE-Ph.D Educational Foundations and Ph.D Mathematics Education (1st survey); CN-MA Nursing (1st survey);

CSSP-MA Peace and Security Studies, Ph.D Peace and Security Studies (1st survey); and IPESR-MA Physical Education (Preliminary) and BS Physical Education (1st survey). The latter is the only undergraduate program submitted for evaluation. A total of 33 accreditors from various state universities around the country came to carry out the survey.

After four days of thorough document assessments and interviews with area representatives, they declared satisfaction in the results they arrived at, and congratulated the university during the closing program for their laudable performance. Official results of the accreditation will be sent to the university by AACCUP within a few weeks.(MGM/OP)

to maintain its ISO 9001:2008 certificate, Bicol University continues to ensure the quality of its management system. T h i r t y - o n e internal auditors visited the different units and offices of the university on July 24 to 29 to assess the extent of compliance to quality standards set by each office and how far they had achieved their key result areas (KRAs). The auditors reported a total of 65 improvement potentials throughout the different units and offices of the university. Twenty-five non-formity cases were also reported. All concerned units and offices are expected to be able to address these findings—particularly the non-conformities—before the external audit. The external audit is scheduled on the last week of November. All academic and non-academic units are to undergo assessment that would lead to BU’s re-certification, being the first evaluation under the second cycle of the ISO 9001:2008 quality systems audit.
