IntroductionComponents of the Video Program

The Video Program (DVD/IVHS) accompanies the Glencoe Spanish programs, published by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, a division of the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. The video episodes, filmed in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, and the United States, focus on the activities of six Spanish-speaking teenagers. Students meet them and many other people of all ages in an authentic Spanish-speaking context at home, at work, at school, and at play. There are fourteen episodes, one for each chapter of the textbook. Each episode contains two parts. The first is the ongoing story of the lives of the teens. The second part is a tour of a particular area of the Spanish-speaking world followed by a story related to that area. These stories vary to meet all interest levels and introduce us to real people who live there. We hear these people speak, which exposes students to the many accents of the Spanish-speaking world. The Video Activities CD includes student activities with answer key, the script of the video, and cultural notes.

Objectives of the Video Program

The Video Program supports and extends the objectives of the Glencoe Spanish textbooks. The great advantage of video is obvious. It combines visual cues (settings, actions, facial expressions, body language, and signs) with sound cues (including language of course, but also sound effects, laughter, and music). These are all tools that students can use to acquire a global comprehension of what is going on. Students are not expected to understand everything. Instead they should be encouraged to speculate intelligently, to draw on their own experience, to trust their intuition, and relax. The Video Program has several purposes well in line with the Standards for Foreign Language Learning:• To help and prepare students to understand authentic materials• To present cultural information • To stimulate discussion in Spanish about cultural differences or similarities• To encourage further investigation of the topics and ideas presented.

Teaching Suggestions

General Comments

The Video Activities CD includes previewing (Antes de mirar), viewing (Al mirar), and postviewing (Después de mirar) activities. The previewing and postviewing activities are self-explanatory. The viewing activities are very simple tasks and revolve around problem solving rather than questions and answers. They deal with very short video segments. The techniques used are varied: viewing with sound, viewing without sound, freeze frame, and optionally, viewing in slow motion or frame by frame. Generally speaking, you should go over every viewing activity with your students before doing it. Make sure they understand the task at hand. Do not hesitate to replay the segment several times, pausing each time to allow students to perform their task, either in writing or orally. If students do the activity in writing, be sure they limit their answers to one or two key words, just enough to show that they understood what was asked of them. When done orally, the viewing activities are especially fun because the whole class participates. Each student notices something different and therefore contributes to the comprehension of all. Make sure you wrap up each activity by playing the video segment a final time.

[Episodio 1 Cultural Notes]El Caminito, Buenos AiresNamed after a tango, this 320-feet-long pedestrian alley was built over an old railway in the heart of the vibrant La Boca neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Notable features include the colorful dwellings and walls flanking the Caminito and the elevated sidewalks to prevent flooding. This open-air museum, regularly brimming with sculptures, artwork, handicrafts, engravings and photographs, is further enlivened by the tango singers and dancers who perform there. The best time to visit is on the weekend or during the Festival Internacional del Tango (late February through early March) when the entertainment explodes.

El Parque del RetiroThe Parque del Buen Retiro (The Retiro Park) is the most emblematic example of a Madrilenian Park. It was a royal park, as it originally belonged to the Real Sitio del Buen Retiro palace. The palace was built in 1632, and King Felipe IV commissioned it as a retreat for the Royal family. The word «retiro» stands for retreat, hence the name of the park and palace.

The park has acres of woodland that form a green, tree-clad island in the middle of an asphalt sea. White stone figures of the kings and queens of Spain peep out from the avenues of lofty trees and thick bushes, and just inside the park, there is a large artificial lake where rowboats can be rented. The park also has its rose garden, as well as many delightful secluded nooks, where strollers can enjoy a little privacy.

There are always people walking in the park, especially families and couples during the weekend and holidays.

[Episodio 2 Cultural Notes]Horses in the South ConeHorses inhabited Chile and Argentina in the Pleistocene era, but then disappeared by recent history until the Spanish arrived with them. The Mapuche, an Auraucanian group from Chile, incorporated them into their lives and used them to defend themselves from the conquistadors. Horses also allowed the Mapuche to spread out easily into the Argentine pampa. There are still no motorized vehicles or roads in many areas, including the Manso valley, and in those places, the horse remains the vehicle of choice.

The Criollo is a strong, sure-footed breed from Argentina. The tack is distinctive of the Southern Andes—similar to the English saddle, but softer with a sheepskin cover.

Don Quijote and the Spanish windmillsMany have come to know about the celebrated windmills of Spain through the internationally proclaimed novel Don Quijote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. These famous windmills can still be found in the region of La Mancha. They are called windmills because of how they worked: the wind made it possible to grind the grains of the harvested cereals.

Cuzco, a cultural capitalCuzco (Perú) is and will always be a cultural capital. It already was one during the days of the Inca Empire, and it is one nowadays. It is a compulsory tourist destination for those who love the history of humankind. It is not only the ruins that attract the tourist eye but also the people and their customs, the history and its traditions, the strange but also enriching combination of the old and the new continent.

Peruvian women weaversThe textile craft developed over the millennia and it is a unique treasury of techniques that remain unknown to most of the world. These techniques are passed on, not by writing, but by the Andean process of person-to-person communication, by watching and practicing. The methodology is that the older women weavers teach the younger generations.

Peruvian weaving is a ritual activity with different layers of meaning. Peruvian textiles honor Pachamama, Mother Earth. Many find inspiration in the ideas of indigenous people who developed systems of survival in this hemisphere in pre-Columbian times. In their craft, we find, along with the diversity of colors, icons, and symbols that inspire a respect for the earth.

[Episodio 4 Cultural Notes]FlamencoFlamenco is the music and dance of the gypsies from Andalucía, in the southern part of Spain. The song, dance, heel tapping, guitar, clapping, etc., are blended together in their passionate rhythms.

Some thought that the gypsies came from Egypt, thus the word gitano, from the old Spanish word for Egyptian: egiptano. However, we now know they actually came from a nomadic ethic group in India.

Apart from the Indian influences, the Arabs made an immense contribution to the molding of modern flamenco, which is not surprising since they ruled Spain for seven centuries. Yet flamenco in its present form is only some two hundred years old.

Chilies have been growing in Mexico for thousands of years. There are more than 150 indigenous varieties. In the fifteenth century, Columbus brought Mexican chilies to Europe and from there they spread around the world. The rest, as they say, is history.

Few other ingredients have had such a dramatic upsurge in mainstream culinary use over the last decade as has chili. Once considered an exotic component of Latin, Indian and Asian cuisines, the chili, in its many fresh and dried forms, has become a modern kitchen staple, added to everything from salad dressings to pasta dishes.

Religion and fiestas in SpainNearly every fiesta in Spain is a celebration of some religious event. For example, the romerías, where there is a great deal of singing, dancing, etc. are often associated with a pilgrimage to a religious shrine. The romería is a very special celebration, as it is a way of maintaining and transmitting tradition. The origin of this event is the devotion that people have to a virgin or a saint. It is celebrated in a hermitage near to the village. People usually go there riding a mountain bike, walking, riding a tractor or, obviously, driving a car or a motorcycle.

[Episodio 7 Cultural Notes]

Pato in ArgentinaPato is an Argentine sport that was first played by the Gauchos. It is a combination of polo, soccer and basketball. Pato, which means duck, originally involved two teams on horseback and a duck in a leather pouch with handles. Two players would grab the handles and pull until one of them would let go of it. The winning team would ride away, while the opposing team tried to stop them and grab the “pato.”

The sport became dangerous and it was banned in 1882. In the late 1930s, the sport was reintroduced with new rules. Today, two teams of four men on horseback attempt to throw the improved “pato,” a leather ball with six handles, into one of two baskets at either end of a large field.

Tortuguero: Costa Rica’s favorite spot for tortoise nesting Tortuguero is one of the most important nesting sites in the Caribbean for the green tortoise; other species of sea tortoises, such as the leatherback and the hawksbill tortoises, nest in this area. The green tortoise is a medium-size tortoise that can weigh up to 440 pounds, and has long fins that reach 3 feet in length.

The nesting of the green tortoise is one of the most interesting phenomena of Nature. The process begins with the migration of the tortoises. Their copulation starts at a short distance from the shore. Then the female comes out from the sea and digs a nest for her eggs. The female will then start laying approximately one hundred eggs. When her task is completed, she covers the hole again and begins her journey back to the sea.

In a period of two months, the sun incubates the eggs. The baby tortoises break out of their shells, and begin to look for a way out of the nest. They instinctively head toward the sea, which is the brightest point in the horizon.

San Juan, Puerto RicoSan Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico. The city is located in the northeastern part of the island of Puerto Rico. It was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521 and is regarded as the oldest city in the United States of America (the oldest city in the continental United States is St. Augustine, Florida). Today, San Juan serves as Puerto Rico's most important seaport, as well as the main manufacturing, financial, cultural, and tourist center of the island. In 1508, Juan Ponce de León founded the original settlement, Caparra, today known as Pueblo Viejo, behind the almost land-locked harbor just to the west of the present San Juan metropolitan area. A year later, the settlement was abandoned and

moved to a site which was called at the time Puerto Rico, meaning rich port. In 1521, the name of the settlement was switched with the name “San Juan,” the name which Christopher Columbus had originally given the island in honor of John the Baptist.

El Viejo San Juan, Puerto RicoEl Viejo San Juan (Old San Juan) is the historic colonial district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is located on a small island connected to the mainland of Puerto Rico by bridges and a causeway. The city is characterized by its narrow cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, which date back to the sixteenth and seventeenth century when Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony. Numerous public plazas and churches, including The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, which contains the tomb of the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, characterize the district.

The oldest parts of the city remain partly enclosed by massive walls. Several defensive structures and notable forts acted as the primary defenses of the settlement which was subjected to numerous attacks. El Palacio de Santa Catalina, also known as La Fortaleza, was one of this forts and is nowadays the executive mansion for the Governor of Puerto Rico.

Alejandra Ay, Vicky, no entendiste nada.

[Episodio 10 Cultural Notes]

La charreada, a popular Mexican traditionA charreada is a Mexican-style rodeo that is different from other rodeos. The Mexican cowboy or cowgirl is known as a charro or charra. In an American rodeo competitors race against the clock, so the emphasis is on speed in any given event. On the other hand, in a Mexican charreada the excellent style and skills of the rider or roper are emphasized, and only one event is timed.

The charrería came to Mexico from Spain, in the sixteenth century. When the Spaniards first settled in Mexico, their ruler told them to raise horses, but not to allow the Mexicans to ride them. After a while, the Spaniards had very large cattle-raising estates. They needed to employ Mexicans as vaqueros or herdsman, and the natives soon became excellent equestrians. Small landholders, known as rancheros or ranchers, were the first genuine charros and invented charreadas.

The participants in a charreada take this rodeo very seriously. Horses keep time with live or recorded mariachi music as their riders, carrying flags, parade around arena.

The Zócalo in the City of MexicoThis enormous paved square, occupies the site of the ceremonial center of Mexico—Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire. Since the time of Emperor Moctezuma, palaces, temples and other structures surrounded the area. Today, it is the largest public square in the Western Hemisphere, and the third one in the world (after the Tiananmen Square in the center of Beijing and the Red Square in Moscow).

The word zócalo means base or plinth. The name of the square stuck after the attempt to erect a Monument to Independence, which was never concluded.

Crowded streets filled with shops, restaurants, cantinas, street vendors and more contribute to turn Mexico City into a unique place. In the Zócalo numerous events, such as political rallies, protest marches, sit-ins, concerts and other festive events, take place all year round.

VenezuelaVenezuela has epic proportions: it has South America's largest lake and third-longest river, the highest waterfall in the world, and the longest of all snakes. It also has jaguars, armadillos and some of the most spectacular landscapes you will ever see.

There are the snowcapped peaks of the Andes in the west; steamy Amazonian jungles in the south; the hauntingly beautiful Gran Sabana plateau, with its strange flat-topped mountains, in the east; and miles of white-sand beaches fringed with coconut palms on the Caribbean coast.

Visual arts and handicrafts are popular in Venezuela, but the country's most distinctive cultural outlet is probably its music, which is an eclectic blend of European, African and indigenous rhythms. Theater is growing in popularity, and there is an active literary scene, especially among the younger generation.

El Hatillo de CaracasThe tiny old town of El Hatillo is today a distant suburb of Caracas. However, before becoming part of the capital's metropolitan sprawl, it had happily gone its own independent way for centuries. Like many other Venezuelan towns, this one revolves around its own Plaza Bolívar, and manages to preserve some of its colonial architecture. The houses in the town center have been restored and painted in bright colors, and every second one of them is a restaurant, a cafe, a boutique, an art gallery or a handicraft shop. Hordes of trendy caraqueños go to the village on the weekends, and the resulting explosion of eating outlets has been extraordinary—you will find most major foreign cuisines represented, from French and Italian to Japanese and Thai. El Hatillo is 9.5 miles southeast of the city centre, and is connected to Caracas by frequent carritos.

El Camino de los incas (The Inca Trail)The Lost City of Machu Picchu is without doubt the most recognizable symbol of the Inca Empire. The Camino de los incas (The Inca Trail), as it is known now, was the Royal Highway that led pilgrims and officials of the Empire to the Sacred City of the Incas.

The Inca Trail is the best of its kind in the world, due to its exquisite natural beauty and unforgettable views offering a wide variety of ecological areas, from deserts to the tropical Bosque de Nubes de los Andes (Andean Cloud Forest), home to exotic plants and animal life. On the Inca Trail, there are over 250 known species of orchids, and in the different ecosystems, numerous rare birds, animals, and reptiles including several species considered to be in danger of extinction.

Walking the ancient Inca Trail, you can see the overgrown Inca buildings undiscovered by the Spanish Empire, giving you the feeling that you are the first to come across them. The Trail is paved with blocks of stone; it has stone stairways, tunnels and wooden bridges. It crosses rivers, streams, temperate valleys, warm cloud forests, and cold highlands.

It has been the scene of many historical and social events; many writers have chosen it as the background for their novels, and some film directors have chosen it as the setting for their films.

AVE ("Alta Velocidad Española" or Spanish High Speed)The Alta Velocidad Española (AVE) high-speed rail system is currently being expanded in Spain. High-speed trains have been running on the Madrid-Sevilla route since 1992. Food from the Hispanic worldMexican cooking is the most familiar variety of “Hispanic food” in most of the United States, but it is not representative of the cuisine of most other Hispanic countries. The cuisine of Mexico can be heavily dependent on staples such as corn and beans and is greatly indebted to the cuisine of their Aztec ancestors. Meanwhile, the cuisine of Cuba may be dependent on root crops, plantain and rice and is greatly influenced by their

African roots. Different still is the fare of the cuisine of Spain, which is abundant in olive oil, tomatoes, seafood, and meats, often mirroring the cuisines of its Mediterranean neighbors. Furthermore, Argentina relies almost exclusively on red meats (consuming almost everything derived from beef) and is heavily influenced by Italian cooking. In Peru, staples such as corn and potatoes are the most popular, and much of its gastronomy derives from the diet of their Incan progenitors. This variation in staples and cuisine is also evident in the differing regional cuisines within the national borders of the individual countries. As you can see, Hispanic food is as diverse as the countries themselves with cultural history playing a major role in what is served for dinner.

Cuban sandwichThese sandwiches have a submarine-style layering of ham, roast pork, cheese, and pickles between sliced Cuban bread. The key to a great, versus a good, Cuban sandwich lies in the grilling. A great Cuban sandwich is grilled in a sandwich press until the ham, pork, and pickles have warmed in their own steam. Cuban restaurants use a sandwich press, but you can substitute that for a waffle iron. These sandwiches use no mayonnaise, lettuce, onions, bell peppers, or tomatoes; however, butter and mustard are optional. Cuban sandwiches are eaten hot (pressed) or cold (room temperature).

The exact origin of Cuban sandwiches, as we know them now, is something of a mystery, but historians believe they come from the Cubans who immigrated to the Ybor City area in Tampa, Florida.
