Leading Through UnderstandingSelf and Others

Our various personality styles often create tension in the workplace when we don’t understand our own needs or the needs of others. We have a tendency to respond to others using the Golden Rule—“Do unto others as

you would have them do unto you.” We need to learn to use the Platinum Rule—“Do unto others as they would have you do unto them.”

Participants will:

Learn their primary personality style in relation to people or task orientations and direct or indirect communication styles.

Learn that it is safe to laugh at their own foibles and freely accept the foibles of others.

Explore how the various styles tend to “misbehave” and cause individuals to be viewed as “difficult” people.

Explore the importance of relating to others based on others’ styles rather than on their own styles.

This training will engage participants in actionable learning activities that:

Engage and entertain while teaching fundamental principles about working with others.

Provide a framework for discussion about personality differences that create conflict.

Facilitate greater understanding of self and others.

This training program is designed for managers, leaders of all levels, and individuals on a track to leadership.

Extraordinary Customer Service:“Little Things Make a Big Difference”

Good customer service is a snap for those who have a positive outlook on life and a genuine concern for others. Extraordinary customer service happens when those same caring, positive people learn to apply the finishing

touches to even the smallest details of their personal interactions. This workshop covers learning to listen, understanding the connection between the little things and extraordinary service, and the keys to professional courtesy and treating everyone with respect. Participants will leave with a better appreciation of how the little things they do day-to-day make the biggest difference.

Skills:

Understand the importance of a positive attitude and approach to customer service.

Understand the importance of caring enough to watch over the smallest details and to go the extra mile in serving clients.

InsideOut Coaching

Great teams rarely produce exceptional results without a great leader or coach. Your team leaders are the people who inspire, affirm, correct, and unleash front line employee performance. To achieve breakthrough

SolutionInsideOut Coaching: Tools for Team Leaders is a program that turns an ordinary, task-oriented manager into an extraordinary, results-oriented coach for your employees. Facilitation Skills toLead Effective Teams

If you have ever heard or resonated with the phrase “death by meeting,” then you know facilitation skills are important. Many of us have experienced meetings we wish we could have avoided. A key function

for any leader is the ability to facilitate a productive, meaningful meeting that staff is happy to attend. This interactive workshop will present the foundations of effective facilitation as well as offer techniques to keep the meeting focused and on task. In addition, the issue of “difficult people” will be addressed.

You will learn:

 Your role as a facilitator.

The importance of an agenda and how to use it effectively in your meeting.

How to keep the main thing the main thing in your meeting.

How adult learning relates to effective meetings.

How to grow as a team using effective facilitation skills.

Crucial Conversations

According to the authors, “Whenever you’re not getting the results you’re looking for, it’s likely that [the inability to hold] a crucial conversation is keeping you stuck. Whether

it’s a problem with poor quality, slow time-to-market, declining customer satisfaction, or a strained relationship, if you can’t talk honestly with nearly anybody about almost anything, you can expect poor results. Make crucial conversations skills your best practices and everything gets better.” (Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, Switzler).

Participants will:

Understand and apply the principles that will help them:

Stay focused on what they really want in a crucial conversation.

 Increase dialogue in conversations.

Notice forms of silence and violence that impact dialogue.

Learn how to get their meaning across even without threatening the message.

Learn specific skills to keep everyone sharing information.

Identify their own style under stress and manage it.

This training will engage participants in actionable learning activities that:

Engage them in identifying and practicing skills that will assist them in moving from healthy dialogue to taking action.

Facilitate greater understanding of self and others in conversations.

Provide a framework for developing more productive communication patterns that will increase their leadership capacity.

This training program, delivered by certified VitalSmarts trainers, is designed for managers, leaders of all levels, and individuals on a track to leadership.

Managing Without Authority

Lots of responsibility . . . but not much authority? Too little control over those who can make or break your success? This session is for you! Learn to develop mutual purpose that others will care about. This answers the

question, “What’s in it for me?” Identify crucial moments when the initiative will either move forward or go south, and be able to effectively influence the players to marshal support. Self-assess your own tendencies toward the polar extremes of micromanagement – which kills cooperation – or interpersonal abandonment, which signals failure. Amp up your own ability to achieve success for your team!

Participants will:

Identify their own areas of high responsibility/low authority.

Learn strategies to help people answer the WIIFM (What’s in it for me?) question.

Practice defining a common, shared purpose that is needed to engage others.

Self-assess for ability to hit “the sweet spot” of leadership, rather than micromanage or abandon others, and learn ways to manage personal tendencies toward these extremes.

Develop an action plan for a current project, including strategies to “manage without authority.”

This training program is designed for managers, leaders of all levels, individuals on a track to leadership, and anyone who is responsible for the results of a team whose members are not their own direct reports.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

According to Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen R. Covey

presents a well-grounded, principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. He contrasts this approach to the common thinking of popular culture today which emphasizes independence over interdependence, short-term wins over sustainable success, blaming others over taking responsibility, and living for “me” rather than mastering the art of “we.”

Participants will:

Learn to move through the maturity continuum from dependence to independence, and finally, to interdependence.

Find the security to adapt to change, and the wisdom and power to take advantage of opportunities that change creates.

Learn to live more effectively as the seven habits are explored.

This training will engage participants in actionable learning activities that:

Engage them intellectually and emotionally in examining the principles that are foundational to the seven habits of highly effective people.

Provide a skill set for understanding self and others to achieve both the private victory and the public victory.

This training program, delivered by certified Covey trainers, is designed for managers, leaders of all levels, and individuals on a track to leadership.

Leading at the Speed of Trust

The number one job of any leader is to inspire trust. In the book, The Speed of Trust: The One Thing That Changes Everything, Covey concludes that trust

is the one thing that can build or destroy every human relationship. According to Covey, “The lack of trust will bring down the most powerful countries and bankrupt the most profitable companies.” There is good news! Trust can be built, inspired, maintained, and when lost, it can be restored.

Participants will:

Choose to make building trust in the workplace an explicit goal of their work.

Reflect on the impact of the real, measurable Trust Taxes they might be paying.

Change Trust Taxes to Trust Dividends, which are the benefits that come from growing trusting relationships.

Create impact plans for building Trust Accounts with all key stakeholders.

Begin using the Language of Trust to leverage positive outcomes in their organizations.

This training will engage participants in learning content that will assist them to:

Understand how high trust contributes to and drives superior results time and time again.

Leadership Through Story

“Humans are not ideally set up to understand logic; they are ideally set up to understand stories” (Roger C. Schank, cognitive scientist). Across business, industry, and education, a strong

message has been communicated that we must confront the brutal facts of our reality, synthesize and analyze data associated with the key metrics of our work, and make quality decisions based on both facts and data. While this is certainly excellent advice for building a strong organizational vision and plan of action, it is hard to get staff committed to the vision using numbers and statistics. Stories are far more effective for this purpose because they pack an emotional punch and they place facts in a context that is meaningful to the listener. This workshop will explore the value and purpose of story in leadership practice and provide practical tips for effective storytelling.

You will learn:

The components of a great story.

How story will help you create a compelling vision for the future.

How to apply your learning as you create stories you want to tell during the workshop.

The Leadership Challenge

“Love ‘em and Lead ‘em.” That’s the tag line Dr. James M. Kouzes, co-author of the book The Leadership Challenge uses in his correspondence. It captures the essence of the time-honored work he and his partner, Dr.

Barry Z. Posner, have done to launch leaders across the nation and the world into great leadership accomplishments. Their evidence and behavior-based leadership model is backed by 25 years of original research and data from over three million leaders. It proposes Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership that apply to leadership at any level of any organization. The book is a classic and the principles are powerful guides to becoming a more authentic and effective leader, who is able to meet the challenges of our turbulent times.

Participants will:

Be introduced to the five practices of exemplary leadership: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart.

Take the “self” version of the Leadership Practices Inventory, a highly acclaimed 360-degree assessment tool based on the five practices.

Identify personal strengths and challenges in the five practices.

Set goals and develop action steps for improvement in the five practices.

This training will engage participants in actionable learning activities that:

Provide a deep understanding of each of the five practices of exemplary leadership.

Stimulate their thinking about how the five practices can be integrated into their daily leadership responsibilities.

Inspire them to become a more effective leader through deliberate practice of the principles presented.

This training program is designed for managers, leaders of all levels, and individuals on a track to leadership.
