What is BGI®?Held once a year, BGI is an global Tech Transfer Accelerator (TTA) directed at would-be tech entrepreneurs and Innovators (tech start-up / spin-outs under 5 years), working on 4 market-application tracks: i) Medical Technologies & Health IT, ii) Smart cities & Industrial Tech, iii) Enterprise IT & Smart Data and iv) Ocean Economy.

What does BGI have to offer?20 startups are selected every year to BGI accelerator and benefit from expert mentoring amounting to over 1.150h, which includes boot camps in Lisbon (Portugal) and Cambridge (USA), valued at 1M€ of in kind support. Every year about 10 out of the 20 accelerated ventures attracts some form of financing. 4 selected ventures are also supported by BGI Award sponsor - Caixa Capital, with up to €500.000 of convertible notes. Unlike the traditional accelerators, BGI supports alumni ventures for up to 5 years.

What does BGI ask in return?BGI takes no more than 5% post money on a minimum (valuation of €1 million (pre-money) in those companies which are selected for investment by Caixa Capital. Apart from that, BGI does not charge its entrepreneurs in any way. No seed funding per founder is provided nor BGI gets an equity stake during the acceleration or post graduation period of up to 5 years. However, BGI gets a warrant via the aforementioned subscription up to 5% post money on a minimum €1M pre-money.

What is BGI's track record?BGI key metrics: in 4 editions, 80 startups were supported, out of which 55 are active (69%), over half securing venture financing amounting €28 million (post BGI), 62% from Angel & VC. The average venture financing per company is 664k€ and 48.3% of BGI companies get funded by early stage investors. BGI alumni largest cumulative round to date was € 3.9 million per company, whereas the smallest was 40k€. We are planning our first exit in the course of 2015.

How does the accelerator work?

With part of the Organising team based in Lisbon at ISCTE-IUL and part in Boston at MIT, the acceleration is provided via a combination of uniquely designed boot camps (2 in Lisbon@ISCTE and 1 in Cambridge@MIT) that help hone in the skills of tech-based entrepreneurs and focus teams on critical steps in successful go to market and de-risking strategies before approaching investors. Each boot camp typically runs from 1 to 2 weeks and is extremely intensive. After graduation, BGI concentrates/limits its support to the top 12 (out of the 20 per edition) for a period of up to 5 years via a formal catalyst program (1st year) and continuous coaching over the following years until companies exit or fail.

How can you get involved?

BGI is country and origin agnostic, nearly 40% of all submissions come from 22 countries outside of Portugal (Portugal ranks 25 as one the ease of doing business). After having built a strong network in the USA, BGI is currently focused in expanding it's valuable network in Europe and beyond. Meaning that we’re looking for strategic partners in strategic geographies. Most of BGI's candidates stem from a strong network of university and private incubators, accelerators and Business Angel early stage portfolios. Hence, prior to BGI a considerable portion of applicants have secured some form of pre-seed funding that enabled them to carry out some derisking activities.
