3BULL DOG BULLETINJUNE 1-30, 2020

Jeff Hester announced his resignation as athletic director at Columbus North High School on May 18 after a 12-year

span in which the Bull Dogs captured eight team state championships, claimed 85 team titles in Conference Indiana sports and won 17 CI all-sports trophies (six boys and 11 girls).

In addition, CNHS teams seized 122 sectional trophies, 73 regional crowns and 25 semi-state championships during Hester’s tenure with the Bull Dogs that began in July 2008. The eight state championships during his time pushed the Columbus High/Columbus North total to 37 titles, a figure which stands fourth on the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s list of most state titles by a school.

Hester departs Columbus North in order to become the assistant athletic director at Carmel High School, the state’s winningest athletic program with 154 IHSAA state championships. The Greyhounds have claimed state crowns in 17 sports, including a state-record 35 titles in girls swimming. In addition, Carmel recently was named the winner of the 2019-20 MaxPreps Cup as the No. 1 high school sports program in the nation.

Hester, a 1992 graduate of Elwood High School and a 1996 graduate of Indiana University, will complete his duties on June 4 at Columbus North and begin his position at Carmel on July 1.

“I love Columbus and forever will be grateful for the opportunity I was given to lead the athletic department at Columbus North,” Hester said. “I am fortunate to have been able to surround myself with remarkable people who shared the same philosophy of education-based athletics that I hold.”

Columbus North principal David Clark expressed mixed emotions about Hester’s departure.

“I’m sad and I’m happy,” Clark said. “It’s a two-edged sword. I’m happy for Jeff and the career opportunity he has. However, I also am sad for our school and our program in that he is an outstanding athletic administrator and will be missed.

“He has helped lead our athletic program to many successes, but this goes beyond the wins and losses. The way he has put student-athletes first, it has been superior. He always has had a vision of what something needed to be or what something needed to look like. He always was working on new ways to market us or brand our program. His vision was outstanding. It will be very difficult to fill the open position.”

While at Columbus North, Hester oversaw a program that captured state championships in boys’ cross country (three), girls’ cross country (one), boys’ soccer (one), boys’ golf (one), girls’ basketball (one) and gymnastics (one). In addition, Columbus North athletes captured 13 individual state championships, won 235 individual Conference Indiana individual titles and

were awarded an IHSAA Mental Attitude Award on 11 occasions during Hester’s time in charge.

Hester also oversaw construction of new baseball and softball facilities, the creation of a cross country course at CeraLand Park and significant renovations of Memorial Gym, the Auxiliary Gym, Max Andress Field and to the football and track stadium. In addition, he arranged for a new scoreboard in the Charles “Chick” Newell Natatorium, led efforts to “brand” Columbus North athletics, created the school’s Student Athletic Board, created the school’s Champions Together program and has been part of the planning for the new school-owned BCSC Soccer Complex that should be ready for play this fall.

Hester twice received professional awards while at Columbus North. He was named a District 3 Administrator of the Year in 2015 by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and the District 4 Athletic Director of the Year in 2016 by the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

“The athletic success that was achieved always will be memorable, but the relationships I have been able to build with athletes, coaches and community members is what I enjoyed

most,” Hester said. “Only time will tell of the impact I had, but I hope it is one that is looked upon in a positive light.”

Columbus North football coach Tim Bless confirmed that Hester’s impact has been positive.

“Professionally and personally, I’m very sorry to see Jeff Hester leave us – but I completely understand and support him,” said Bless, also a Bull Dogs’ assistant athletic director.

“Coaching for Jeff and working alongside him in the athletic office, I’ve come to greatly respect his passion for student-athletes, his work ethic, sincerity and consistency. During his tenure, Columbus North athletics has maintained a standard of excellence that not many schools can match. I attribute much of the credit to Jeff Hester. Personally, I have so appreciated Jeff’s unwavering support of me and wish him and his family all the best going forward.”

At Carmel, Hester succeeds Bruce Wolf, who has been a teacher, coach and administrator for the Hamilton County school for 40 years. Hester will work there with Jim Inskeep, who is completing his 20th year as the Greyhounds’ athletic director.

Seniors Tessa Lomax and Riley Eder each received a scholarship award from separate coaches’ groups.

Lomax was presented a Marion Crawley Scholarship from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, while Eder was the recipient of a Carolyn Pieper Scholarship from the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association. Both scholarships include a $500 grant to be applied at their respective colleges.

Lomax was a four-year varsity letter winner and three-year starter who helped the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 72-32 record with two Conference Indiana championships plus one sectional and one regional crown. She averaged 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in 95 career games, and she stands eighth on the Bull Dogs’ all-time list with 519 rebounds. She was voted first-team all-conference as a sophomore and junior.

Off the floor, Lomax has been a strong student who holds a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average through seven semesters. She previously was named

a CI Scholar-Athlete, IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State and ICGSA honorable mention Academic All-State. Lomax plans to attend Indiana State University, the same school where her sister Nadia currently attends.

Eder was two-year varsity letter winner and a valuable support player throughout her career for the Bull Dogs. She also has been a strong student who compiled a 4.19 GPA and previously was named first-team Academic All-State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, honorable mention Academic All-State by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and a CI Scholar-Athlete.

Eder plans to attend Purdue University, where she will major in neurobiology with ultimate plans to become a veterinarian. She recently learned that she had been accepted for direct admission to Purdue’s

College of Veterinary Medicine. The Crawley Scholarship is awarded

in the name of the late Marion Crawley, who was the IBCA’s first executive director after a coaching career where his teams won four boys basketball state championships – two with the Washington Hatchets and two with the Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos. The Pieper Scholarship is named in honor of Pieper, a former coach and administrator at South Knox as well as a founding member of the HBCA and longtime director of the HBCA All-Star Classic.

Spencer Rivera converted 97 percent of his extra-point and 56 percent of his field-goal attempts

in two seasons as a kicker for the Columbus North football team. The Bull Dogs’ senior now will have the chance to continue kicking at the college level following his commitment to Wabash College for academics and athletics.

“I always have heard about the success that has come out of Wabash,” said Rivera, who also considered attending Franklin College and Concordia University in Chicago. “The Wabash football program has been very successful, and their work ethic is unbeatable in both football and academics. It is a small school, so getting to know your teachers is a no-brainer. I am looking forward to that.”

On the football field, Rivera converted 31-of-32 extra points and 5-of-9 field goals for 46 kicking points over the past

two seasons while sharing duties with CN junior Carter Ward. In addition, Rivera averaged 46.7 yards with one touchback on 46 kickoffs. He also was a situational punter as a junior, averaging 25.3 yards with a long of 45 on three punts.

Rivera will be joining a Wabash program that competes in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Last season, the Little Giants went 7-4 and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs. Historically, the Wabash football program dates to 1884 and has an all-time record of 696-392-59 over 133 seasons of competition.

Rivera plans to major in accounting and minor in business before pursuing a career in real estate.

He is the fifth Columbus North football player and the 18th CNHS athlete in the Class of 2020 to announce plans to pursue college athletics. Rivera joins Mitchel Collier (Central Michigan),

Jackson Davis (Butler University), Jackson Payne (Hanover College) and Landon Robbins (Valparaiso University) as Columbus North athletes who plan to play football at the next level.
