July 10th, 2016 ~ Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

NOTE FROM FATHER JOE - UPDATE: Father Dan…I spoke with Fr. Dan on Sunday July 2nd….he was as upbeat as HE can be after neck surgery and having a brace around his neck. He is out of the hospital and recovering with a family friend. Please keep him in your prayers. Father Slawek … as I mentioned last week we were informed by Msgr. Hart, our Priest personnel director on June 28th that Fr. Slawek (along with some other newly ordained priests) are still in Poland due to the fact that their new visas have yet to arrive. We received further word last week that the process for getting new visas approved has been taking longer than the usual six months time. The applications for the visa for the new priests were sent in sometime in March. Msgr. Hart advised us that it might be until September that these might be approved. I will keep you informed if there is any further news. A WEEK OF SAINTS…. This coming week has a number of feast days that we celebrate in the church. We sometimes forget that there are famous and not so famous saints who are held up to us as examples of faith. The feast of St. Benedict b. 480 the founder of the Benedictine order of priests is tomorrow July 11th the Benedictine community is known for education of youth and also for advances in liturgical music. July 13th St. Henry II succeeded his father in 995 and crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Benedict VIII in 1014. He was a true earthly ruler who cared for his people, especially the poor. He is the patron saint of disabled persons. July 14th we celebrate the feast of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, (the lily of the Mohawks) was born in Canada as a member of the Mohawk tribe. She converted to Christianity and served the sick among her own people. She was an example of Jesus in the midst of a lot of turmoil. July 15th St. Bonaventure was a Franciscan teacher and doctor of the church who taught in Paris. He is known for seeking unity among the Franciscan community and often is called the second founder of the Franciscans. July 16th is the feast day Our Lady of Mt Carmel (celebrating a monastery built on Mt. Carmel in northern Israel remembering the encounter of Prophet Elijah and his confronting the false prophets of his day. The devotion to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is very popular. The monastery is still in existence and is staff by an order of religious sisters who welcome visitors to this holy shrine in Israel. Did you ever think about you are called to be a saint by God that is the way get to heaven. We might not be as famous as the saints recognized this week but we have our own story to write too. Hopefully it will be a life lived in faithfulness to God’s way and in service to those who need us…Fr. Joe

“THE JOY OF LOVE”… AN EXHORTATION BY POPE FRANCIS ISSUED MARCH 19, 2016 In the bulletin for the past several weeks I have included excerpts for the fourth chapter of Pope Francis’ exhortation wherein Pope Francis has been reflecting on the words of St. Paul from the first letter to the Corinthians (chapter 12) “Love is patient….etc”. Pope Francis reflects on these various characteristics of love that Paul wrote about to the early Christians. We are nearing the end of this particular reflection as we off the Pope’s reflection on the second of the last four characteristics that Paul writes on love St. Paul says “Love believes all things” in sections 114 and 115 of his exhortation Pope Francis offers this comment on Love believes all things… “Here belief is more in the sense of what we mean by trust. Such basic trust recognizes God’s light shining beyond the darkness, like an ember glowing beneath the ash. This trust enables a relationship to be free. It means we do not have to control the other…Love trusts, its sets us free, it does not try to possess or dominate everything. This freedom fosters independence, an openness to the world around us and to new experiences, which can only enrich and expand relationships. The spouses then share with one another the joy of all they have received and leaned outside the family circle. This freedom makes for sincerity and transparency because they knew they are trusted and appreciated and can be open and hide nothing. A family marked by loving trust, come what may, helps its members to be themselves and spontaneously to reject deceit, falsehood and lies.” JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY… "We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it. Mercy: the word reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life. Mercy: the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness." —Pope Francis THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK… Hope and faith can outshine the darkness of evil. However dense the darkness may appear, our hope for the triumph of the light is stronger still. Though violence continues to stain us with blood, the shadows of death can be dissipated with one act of light. -- from Faith Under: Dramatic Stories of Christian Courage by Matthew Archbold

WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC… We are Catholic because we believe: “Christ is the light of humanity; and it is, accordingly, the heart-felt desire of this sacred Council, being gathered together in the Holy Spirit, that, by proclaiming his Gospel to every creature, it may bring to all men that light of Christ which shines out visibly from the Church.” These words open the Second Vatican Council's Dogmatic Constitution on the Church. By choosing this starting point, the Council demonstrates that the article of faith about the Church depends entirely on the articles concerning Christ Jesus. The Church has no other light than Christ's; according to a favorite image of the Church Fathers, the Church is like the moon, all its light reflected from the sun.--- The Catechism of the Catholic Church 748.
