Coming This July

Help Welcome Pastor Janine This Summer by hosting or attending a gathering with her. Go to http://bit.ly/PastorJanine and sign up to host a meal or to organize an outing. Can’t do web signups? There will be old-fashioned sign-up sheets in the Narthex, in front of the parlor and in the Fellowship Hall. Janine has a dog and enjoys the outdoors, so if you would like to organize kayaking, a hike, a Yappy Hour or other fun opportunity for people to get together, sign up and let us know! Also, if you would like to attend a gathering or meal, you can sign up as well. Pastor Devon will reach out to invite you to attend.

The Trustees Taking Care of Our Building ,

Summer is the Trustees’ time to try to catch up on repairs, maintenance and small improvements, because the activity in the building is reduced. If you have particular concerns or suggestions that might be addressed, let us know. In any event, there will be lots of opportunities for you to help. Here is what is scheduled already. External Signs - The King Street sign has been dismantled for refurbishment. Soon new signs directing visitors to the Sanctuary and to accessible parking will be installed outside near the green awning entrance. Interior Signs – Soon you will see a few new signs to help people find their way through the building. These are prototypes. The trustees and communications committee would like your feedback before we deploy more interior signs. Narthex Refresh – This summer we will eliminate clutter in the Narthex, relocate the coat closet to outside the chapel, repaint, and bring in new furniture. This will start after services on July 7 and will likely extend to July 8. The new furniture may not arrive until late August. The Orange Room 314 – The floor in the Orange Room is damaged. Rather than make another expensive repair to encapsulate possible asbestos, we will put in a new click-in-place floor and will otherwise renovate the room starting July 11. We can use help with prep work on the 11th, painting on the 13th, flooring on the 15th, and finishing touches on the 17th. General Floor Maintenance – During the first two weeks of August most (but not all) of the tile floors in the building will be professionally cleaned, stripped and waxed. Asbestos Abatement – There are a few small areas in the building that require remediation. This will be done over the summer.

For more information and to sign up to help contact: Clint Stretch ([email protected]) Mark Griffin ([email protected]) David Bissette ([email protected]) for signs other than the King Street sign.

Fairlington United Methodist Women: Rising Up for Human Dignity and Rights In the book of Samuel, Rizpah keeps a silent vigil 24/7 beside the bodies of her murdered sons, warding off the birds and wild predators, from the beginning of the harvest season until the beginning of the rainy season (2Samuel 21:9-14). Like Rizpah, prayer vigils and peace activism have been enduring mission practices of United Methodist Women. Our July activities include opportunities for us to learn about women keeping vigil in our own history. Join us as your time and interest permits.
