Bursars Basics WorkshopDarla Freeborn, Whitworth University
How are day-to-day operations in the Bursar’s Office most effectively handled? What practices can help lower your receivables balances while at the same time maintaining good future alumni relations? How do you handle personnel problems and build a good team? Join us for an afternoon full of good information and a lot of sharing and discussion while we cover a myriad of essential practices. We’ll cover everything from payment plans, cashier/money handling practices, and customer service to collections, federal regulations, the audit, those tough personnel management issues, and more. So, whether you’re a bursar new to the industry or a seasoned bursar looking to review, refresh, and maybe get a few new ideas, we’d love to have you join us.
Leadership Workshop
Are you a leader or just the “boss?” What does your approach to leadership say about you? What skills are needed to be a good leader? How do organization, communication and time management affect one’s ability to lead? As a leader, we guide our Bursar staff through change, challenging times and conflict. We help our team set goals and lead the way to accomplish them. Whether you are new to a leadership position and wanting to strengthen your leadership skills, an experienced Bursar leading a team and looking for new ideas, or someone with plans to lead in the future, this workshop will help you recognize what it takes to create, motivate and lead a successful team that’s envied by other departments! Come prepared to share ideas, interact and have some fun as we learn ways to improve our performance as a team leader and a team member.
Session Descriptions
Best In-House Collection PracticesChristina Cardinale, Manhattan College
What can we do in house before we send to an agency, and why would we choose to devote the time and energy when a third party will do the work for us? What techniques do you use to contact students, skip tracing, regulations that must be followed?
Effective Team-Building - No “Trust Falls” NeededDarla Freeborn, Whitworth University
Do you wish your staff was more willing to jump in and help when issues arise? Do you have folks in your offices that have an “it’s not my job” attitude? It takes time, effort, and leading by example, but you can put together a top notch team willing to jump in and help anytime the need arises. In this session, we will talk about what it takes to create a good team as well as some fun exercises you can do to encourage teamwork. Come prepared to share what works well in your office, too--we are all open to new ideas!
Financial Leadership Boot Camp: Bring It!Fidel Calero, American Student Assistance
Being financially savvy is actually all the rage. And being a leader is kind of awesome. However, many of our students lack the basic financial knowledge and confidence to make solid financial decisions. So how do you get in the know? Join us for this down-and-dirty, in-the-trenches session that will give you the must-haves on budgeting, savings, and credit, along with the resources and references to help your students be successful.
How to Handle a Difficult Situation While Keeping a Smile on Your FaceChristina Cardinale, Manhattan College
As the bill collectors on campus, we are definitely one of the most hated individuals on campus. This session will review how to maintain your cool while dealing with students, parents, faculty and staff members. We will also have “story time,” where we can share examples on how we diffused difficult situations.
Managing Conflict: Dealing with Difficult People & SituationsSandra Plenski, University of California Hastings College of the Law
As managers, we all deal with conflict from time to time. We may also have to work with difficult people and situations, both within our higher education institution and beyond it. If handled badly, conflict can do real harm and leave scars within the workplace that may not heal. If handled well, however, conflict can be very useful. This session will explore various effective techniques for handling conflict in the workplace and other organizational settings. Also to be discussed are the 9 most difficult personality types and how to know which difficult behavior is temporary and which is chronic along with ways to control situations so that repetitive patterns finally cease.
The Ins & Outs of Managing Your Perkins ProgramJan Hnilica, Wheaton College; Adrienne Wassell, Illinois Institute of Technology
The days of opening the window at the Bursar’s Office at 9:00 AM to serve long lines of students queued up waiting for you to open are giving way to students & parents that want to transact their business with the University at 3:00 AM, literally from anywhere on the globe. Attend this session to hear about how electronic and mobile solutions are radically changing the way we do our jobs. We will also make time at the end of the session for participants to share some of the innovation things that they are doing.
The “New Look” Bursar’s Office: e-EverythingBill Edmunds, Gentleman’s C Higher Ed Consulting
Join us for a good open discussion as we look at the new regulatory updates for the Perkins program, cover some basic FISAP training, talk about delinquent account/collection issues, and weigh in on the overall pros and cons of the Perkins program itself.
