URUGKO The SCUAA 2010 Special 22nd SCUAA season opens Vol I Issue 1 November 9, 2010 B S By Ira Jacob, Casey Anne Austria, and Zandro Amador In a celebration of unity, some 1,000 athletes gathered for the 22nd season of the State Col- leges and Universities Athletic Association held at Bicol University yesterday. Participating in this year’s show of teamwork and sportsmanship are eight state universities and colleges from the Bicol Region including Camarines Norte State College, Sorsogon State College, Catanduanes State Colleges, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology, Camarines Sur Polytechnic College, Partido State University and Bicol University. Athletes will compete in basketball, table tennis, volleyball, tennis, badminton, baseball, soccer, softball, sepak takraw, and archery. There are competitions in the field events of discus throw, long jump, shot put, triple jump and javelin throw. There are track events for 100 meter dash, 5,000-meter run, 400-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 110/100 meter hurdles, 800-meter run, 1,500-meter, steeple chase, 3,000-meter run, 4X400-meter relay, and 4X100 10,000-meter run. Swimming events include 400 meter freestyle, 100 meter back stroke, 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter butterfly. BU President Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya said that, “After nine years SCUAA is back at BU. We are happy and humbled that the university is entrusted with this major event.” BU hosted the SCUAA in 2001. In his keynote message, Albay Governor Joey Salceda said this year’s SCUAA would be the basis for BU’s partnership with the Palarong Bicol 2011 and Palarong Pambansa 2012 in what is to be a celebration of unity of Bicol through competition. Legazpi City Mayor Carmen Geraldine Rosal said, “We can- not ascend the ladder of progress with crab mentality.” Rosal underscored SCUAA 2010 theme, “Strengthening the Regional Solidarity Through Sports,” saying that teamwork should also be the spirit of governance to rectify crab mentality in public office. Atty. Eduardo Loria, BU vice president for administration said that, “This is the happiest SCUAA ever.” Yesterday’s opening kicked off with a parade from Peñaranda Park heading to the BU Sports Complex. Sports directors presented each delegation. Martin Ba- laybo, BU bronze medalist led the friendship flame lighting. It was followed with the hoisting of the SCUAA and delegation flags led by Dr. Asuncion Asetre, other SUC presidents, and five outstanding athletes from each delegation. BU gold medalist for SCUAA 2009 Jilyn Mendevil led the oath of amateurism, while BU Sports Coordinator Prof. Alan M. Diaz led the pledge for officials. In a celebration of unity, some 1,000 athletes gathered for the 22nd season of the State Col-leges and Universities Athletic Association held

at Bicol University yesterday.Participating in this year’s show of teamwork and

sportsmanship are eight state universities and colleges from the Bicol Region including Camarines Norte State College, Sorsogon State College, Catanduanes State Colleges, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, Dr. Emilio B.
