Program Description Type of Assistance

Polio Eradicationwww.rotary.org

For more than 20 years, Rotary International has played a major role in the fight to end polio worldwide, contributing more than $800 million to the effort through its PolioPlus program.

To date, Rotary members have helped immunize more than 2 billion children in 122 countries.

Financial assistance or volunteer abroad to assist on National Immunization Day.Last remaining endemic countries: Nigeria, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan

Australian Rotary Healthwww.australianrotaryhealth.org.au

Currently focusing on mental health research, Australian Rotary Health has provided close to $27 million to medical research since 1981 as a result of the kind donations of its supporters. It is Australia’s third biggest health problem – after heart disease and cancer. Close to one in five adults in Australia are affected by a mental health problem within a 12 month period.

Financial Assistance (tax deductible). ARH acts as a catalyst for projects that will improve the quality of life for those least able to assist themselves and, also to fund areas of community health not being funded by government. ARH raises donations and invest this money to pro-vide grants for worthy research projects in the medical and health arenas.

Rotarians Against Malariawww.ramaustralia.org

About half the world’s population (3.3 billion) live in areas that have some risk of malaria transmis-sion and one fifth (1.2 billion) live in areas with a high malaria risk. In 2006, there were 247 million malaria cases in 109 countries and territories, causing 1 million deaths.

Financial Assistance. While the vast majority of cases are recorded in sub-Saharan Africa, the Solomon Islands has the world’s highest per capita incidence of malaria.

INTERPLASTwww.interpast.com.au

Interplast volun-teers provide free treatment to people living with a disability from a congenital condition such as cleft lip and palate, or an acquired condition such as burn scar contractures. Treatment is targeted to the indigent population who would otherwise not be able to afford to access services.

Operation Cleft Operation Cleft provides free cleft lip and palate repair surgery to underprivileged children in Bangladesh. There are around 300,000 people with an untreated cleft in Bangladesh. 3,000 – 4,000 babies born with a cleft each year. Over 5,600 cleft repair operations have been complet-ed since the project’s inception in August 2005.
