BYOD at Year 7 & 8, 2014
VISION
Whangaparaoa College will be a lead school in learning, and in achieving excellence in all fields of learner endeavour.
MISSION
Whangaparaoa College will challenge all learners, through a range of opportunities, to maximise their potential as outstanding individuals and as members of the school and the wider
community.
Improved engagement
Improved behaviour
Improved completion of home learning
Year 8 eClasses Trial
A shift from teaching to learning – learners more empowered (Dixon & Tierney, 2013).
We already have over 2200 devices brought to school on average, daily (and have 1400 approx learners).
Teachers and students agreed laptops increase student engagement, with students reporting an increase in the amount of work they are doing both in and out of school … [they] connect ideas in new ways (Argueta, Huff, Tingen and Corn, 2011).
Other Research
With BYODs, “learning is deeper” and learners “engage in more intellectual, conceptual, analytical and creative thinking” (Dixon & Tierney, 2013)
The Flipped Classroom approach enables deeper learning in the classroom (Linda Rubens, Orewa College, 2013)
“Technology has dramatically affected virtually every sector in society that you can think of except education. It is time that gadget goes to school and schools go to gadget 24/7.” (Fullan, 2013, p72)
More Research
Cloud computing has assisted transfer of info between home and school
“The real drive to BYOD is to empower students by letting them make choices about their learning tools.” (Dixon & Tierney, 2013)
School-wide WIFI
Learners can have online diaries/planners/portfolios
We have 1400 approx learners, but over 2400 devices here on average, daily
Other Info …
It is intended that devices will be used WHEN APPROPRIATE to increase engagement and achievement.
There will be times when pen and paper may be more appropriate.
Learners will be given choice, at times, whether to use pen/paper or a device.
We are NOT going paperless
We respect that learners and parents should be able to choose a device that best suits them and that various deals are available.
We will expect learners to have applications to be able to perform various functions.
We will NOT be asking all learners to bring the same device
NOT the cheapest device as they are sometimes designed for consumption rather than creation
Learners will need apps for:
Word processing
Spreadsheet
Presentations
Internet browser
Photos/moviemaking
Need a minimum 4 hours of use from one battery charge
Minimum Specs
Small and Lightweight
Tablet (iPad, Windows or Android) or Netbook
Later in Years 11-13 may wish to use a Laptop or Tablet PC
Best Device for Year 7 & 8 Learners
Y7 & 8 teachers are very keen to use BYODs to further engagement and achievement and to lead the way for their colleagues teaching in Years 9-13
Professional development for ALL teachers will take place during 2014 to ensure they are ready for learners with devices in their classes in 2015
Plans for Professional Development for Teachers 2013-2014
It is sometimes assumed that learners simply know how to use these devices. Yes, they are quick learners usually, but some skills need to be taught.
We will continue to integrate the teaching/learning of specific skills into the curriculum.
We are currently undergoing a Curriculum Review – part of that will be to determine what specific skills should be taught.
Plans to Integrate more eLearning into the curriculum (teaching of
specific skills)
Ensure the device will be good enough for 2-3 years and then be prepared to replace it.
In 2-3 years there may be a completely new/different device and/or way of learning.
