Toowoomba High School Band Visit Last Thursday, the amazingly talented students in the Toowoomba High School Band entertained us with an outstanding performance. They kept the students engaged and did much to further develop their love of music and appreciation for the performing arts. Thank you to the Toowoomba High School Band for including us in their annual visit to the North Coast and to Mrs Booker for organising the visit. World TeachersDay We will be celebrating World TeachersDay on Friday 25 October. It is a time to acknowledge and celebrate the great work done by our staff, to thank them for their ongoing professionalism, dedication and commitment to delivering quality education to our students. We can be proud of the high standard of teaching and learning that is taking place at Byron Bay Public School and the way in which staff work closely together, it is a real team effort. Sarah Mitchell, the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning, has called on the wider community to thank a teacher this World Teachers' Day. Perhaps you might consider thanking your childs class teacher in person, letting them know you appreciate the work they do. Alternatively, you might consider sending in a Thank Youletter or email. As a school Principal, I love receiving letters and emails, hearing about the good work that is being done by staff. Public Speaking Competition On Friday 8 November, the Stage 1, 2 and 3 finals for Public Speaking will be held in the hall. Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6) finals will start at 9.30am, Stage 2 (Year 3 and 4) at 12.10pm and Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) at 2.00pm. We would like to welcome all parents and friends to this wonderful, annual school event. Playground, Lunches and the Canteen As a result of the new build, we have temporarily lost more playground space. We will be trialling the use of the nearby recreation fields as an additional playground space during our lunch break, weather permitting. Interested students from Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) and Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) will be given the opportunity to go there on alternate days. We are fortunate to have access to good playing fields and facilities so close to the school. Thank you to staff who have taken on additional playground duties in order to facilitate this change. If your child has chosen to go to the recreation grounds, please pack their lunch for them. On their chosen day, please do not order their lunch from the canteen. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Staff News Congratulations to Amanda Webber and her partner Eddie Woodrow who were married during the holidays. We wish Mr and Mrs Woodford a long, happy marriage. Also congratulations to Natalie Van der Leeden and her partner Dave on the birth of their beautiful daughter, Sunny. End of Day Routines – Passing on Messages to Students The end of the day is a busy time and it is important that your child and their teacher know how they are getting home. If you need a message to be passed onto your child, please contact the school office before 2.45pm. If there is a change to your child’s after school routine, please ensure your child knows and has a clear understanding about the change. A note in your child’s bag for their teacher is also very helpful.

Planning for 2020 We have commenced our planning and organisation for 2020. If you know that your child/children won’t be attending our school in 2020, with the exception of Year 6 students, could you please inform the office. Similarly, if you are aware of any students moving into our area who will be attending our school in 2020, please ask the families to make contact with the school. We need this information to form classes for next year. Also, if you are having an extended holiday and your child/children will not be back at school on the first day of 2020, please let us know in writing, before the end of the year. Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

P & C News The P & C is looking for a paid volunteer to manage the school’s uniform shop. Approximately 4 hours per week. Kindergarten Excursion to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary Last Friday, Kindergarten participated in an excursion to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. We saw lots of Australian animals and got to feed the kangaroos. All of the children loved watching the bird show and learning about animal adaptations in our class learning experiences. As usual, it was a wonderful excursion! We would like to thank the parent volunteers who came with us and helped us to have a marvellous day.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Our focus for this week is ‘Eating Areas’. It is important that students eat the food that is in their lunch boxes or that they order or purchase from the canteen. When students finish eating and allowed to go and play ,the expectation is that they put their rubbish in the bin and lunch boxes and drink bottles away in their bags or their set area.

The School of Life Project

The School of Life Project are currently rebranding their product and will now be known as The 5000 Days Project. Parents have the opportunity to create a video journal of their child’s journey throughout their school life with The School of Life Project. This involves students using an automated video monitor located at the school to answer age appropriate questions each year until they graduate from High School. Each year about 30 minutes of video will be collected and stored securely. The footage is available to students when they leave high school. The cost is $30 per student per year. For more information contact the school office.

Life Education Program - The Life Education Program provided our students with the face to face delivery of an essential curriculum based program that is designed to empower children to make safe and healthy lifestyle choices, both now and into their adult lives. 1/2G Life Education Van Visit 1/2G enjoyed a visit to the Life Education van on Monday where they met Healthy Harold and learned about keeping safe. Through discussion, problem solving and interactive activities students learned how to make safe and healthy choices. The program’s loveable mascot, Harold the Giraffe, entertained the class with funny stories. All classes from K-6 participated in this educational initiative with programs suited to the different age groups.

Kindergarten Carnivale of Art Craft Kindergarten students learnt a little about how bees make honey and honeycomb. They then worked with Miss Monty to make some beeswax wraps using cotton fabric, jojoba oil, pine resin and grated beeswax, Each class made their own on different fabric. The wraps will be on sale at the Carnivale of Arts for $5 each ($4 for smaller ones).
