Celebrating Grandparents Day Last Thursday we celebrated Grandparents Day with a special assembly, classroom visits and a lovely morning tea in our school hall. It was great to see so many grandparents and friends in attendance. We had over two hundred grandparents visit us, with some coming from as far away as England. Our assembly included touching poems written by four of our Year 6 students, a special performance by our combined school bands conducted by Cameron Smith, the Year 2 choir conducted by Mrs Greenlaw and the Senior choir with Mrs Sherab. Kindergarten also sang a beautiful song about their grandparents. Our classroom visits included further performances, helping with art, sharing our writing and even sketching grandparents. Thank you to Mrs Kneipp and Miss Perusco for organising the assembly, the canteen for providing the scones, the staff who were involved in the performances, as well as setting up and for providing the rest of the delicious morning tea. It was a real team effort. We also need to thank the Sunday Sustainable Bakery who supplied us with amazing gluten free cakes, chocolate croissants and banana bread. Grandparents Day is one of our favourite days of the year and we are glad to have such wonderful families to share this special occasion with. Carnivale of Arts, this Friday 5.00 - 8.00pm We are very excited to be opening the school this Friday evening to host the Carnivale of Arts. The Carnivale of Arts aims to showcase the visual arts in the school and promises to be a great community event. On Friday night you can enter the hall and see over 200 amazing student art competition entries, 26 collaborative class pieces, which will be up for silent auction, along with 12 amazing works from local artists who have generously donated their pieces to be up for live auction. As you leave the hall you will be treated to the delicious scents and tastes of eat street. Byron Bay Samosas, Byron Banh Mi, Yullis and other amazing dinner options provided by our school canteen will all be on offer. You can even grab a coffee from the Wide Open Road Coffee Van. After dinner, why not mosey over to the COLA area where you can shop at some of our local market stall holders, including Byron Bay Candles, Deep Blue Creative Ceramics, Khanun Retro Clothing, Byron Bath Bombs, Pirates Dreaming Jewellery, Fallen Broken Street Hats, Bohemian Dreams Designs Crystal accessories and Jules Hunt leggings. Big Play Day Last Friday we had 50 students participate in the Big Play Day at the Conservatorium of Music in Lismore. The students were split into several ensembles; a Concert Band, String Ensemble, Rock Band, Drum Band and Guitarkestra. The day involved over 100 students from a number of schools in the areas, who have been working on a common selection of songs with their Music in Schools tutors during Term 3. At the end of the day, all students performed in a free outdoor concert in the quad at the Lismore Regional Gallery. It was a great day for everyone involved!

Carnivale of Arts Reminders - 2 sleeps to go!

Winners of the student art competition will be announced at the event, but they will receive their prizes at next week’s

assembly.

We are still accepting donations of plants for the plant stall.

Donated cupcakes need to be at the staffroom from 8.55am - 9.15am. The Carnivale of Arts is holding a Monster Raffle and this year it is an online raffle. There are over $7500 prizes to be won! Tickets are available online for $5 each, or less the more your buy. Simply use the link: https://www.rafflelink.com.au/bbpscarnivaleraffle or scan the QR code included. The raffle will be drawn on Friday 1 November. There will be people out and about in the playground over the next few mornings helping with the sale of online raffle tickets. If you would like to purchase and need assistance with the purchase please come to the front office and we will direct you.

Plant Stall We are also having a plant stall, we would appreciate any plant donations to sell at our market stall. If you have any plants you would be willing to donate, please bring to the front office before Friday November 1. Thank you to the parents who have Carnivale of Arts. Please follow the link to sign up: https://bit.ly/2psPk3b

Keep Cups We encourage all parents wishing to purchase hot drinks at the Carnivale of Arts to please bring reusable keep cups (with a lid). See current advice from Byron Shire Council: #RecycleRightsFAQs Many businesses in Byron Shire offer takeaway coffee cups and lids made from compostable packaging, which is great, but these aren’t yet accepted in Lismore City Council’s organics stream. Unfortunately, at the moment we don’t have a recycling stream for takeaway coffee cups and they will need to be put in the landfill bin for now.

Kindergarten Carnivale of Art Craft Kindergarten students learnt a little about how bees make honey and honeycomb. They then worked with Miss Monty to make some beeswax wraps using cotton fabric, jojoba oil, pine resin and grated beeswax, Each class made their own on different fabric. The wraps will be on sale at the Carnivale of Arts for $5 each ($4 for smaller ones).

Positive Behaviour for Learning Our focus for this week is ‘End of play transitioning’. Students need to listen for the bell. Do your five by five - Stop play, Have a drink, Walk to toilet, Wash hands, Walk to class lines.

Stage 2 Sport - Thursday afternoons All students in Stage 2 will be participating in the round robin Kick Cricket sport session this term at the Byron Bay Rec Grounds. Students will need to bring their broad brimmed hat and a drink bottle. Students will walk to the grounds at 1.50pm and return by 3.00pm. Class teachers will be supervising the games.

Primary Ethics Volunteer Teachers As the end of the year approaches, it’s time to put out a call to remind parents of the need for recruitment of voluntary teachers of Ethics so that the Program can continue at Byron Bay Public in 2020. This program has been running now for nine years and is very popular with parents who see the benefit of their children learning to think in a critical and fun way, about moral issues that arise in their children’s lives. The program can’t keep going however, without the work and commitment of volunteer teachers, most of whom are parents of students. If you want the program to continue and if you think you would enjoy guiding discussion please consider volunteering for a year. The next two-day training session for new volunteers will be happening before the end of the year or early in the new year. For more information and to read our selection criteria, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or to speak to the local Coordinator please email Christine Willmot at [email protected]. I’m happy to meet with you to discuss the details of the program.

Book Fair Our Annual Book Fair will be held on Tuesday 19 November from 8.15am - 4.00pm. This pop-up book store will be held in the School Library. In Week 5, students will make ‘Wish Lists’ in their class library lessons. All students/parents and community members are welcome to be part of this event. Payments can be made by cash, EFTPOS or cheque (made out to the Book Room, Byron Bay). Back orders are available. Please note a website is available for pre-fair browsing. Go to thebookroomatbyron.com and at the top of the page, find the tab for BBPS Book Fair.
