SSSC Care Accolade Nomination

C-Change VolunteersA big welcome from all of us to our new Volunteers Coordinator at C-Change, Joyce Innes. Joyce has been recruited by the organisation as an essential part of our volunteer strategy.

“To assist us with our vision of supporting positive changes in the lives of the people we work for, we are recruiting volunteers with the desire and ability to share their, interests, local knowledge and skills with the people the organisation work for.” (Joyce Innes)

For more information on volunteering at C-Change please contact Joyce:

We are very happy to say that C-Change have recently become a new provider organisation in partnership with East Renfrewshire Council. This can be confirmed after a recently successful tender by the organisation in the local authority.

C-Change hosted an i-plan-it workshop on behalf of Paradigm and Aspirico on Thursday, 22nd March 2012. The event was attended by Sense Scotland, Thistle Foundation, East Renfrewshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council, East Dunbartonshire Social Work, RNIB and Sunbeam House Services in Dublin.

Everyone in attendance seemed to get a lot out of the day and contributed really well participating in the various discussions and asking lots of questions.

Declan Kelly, Aspirico “The discussion was excellent, thanks to C-Change for graciously hosting the event and for the contribution from June Dunlop and Joe Houston as keynote speakers”.

Terry Langton, Aspirico

“It was great to team up with C-Change to present iPlanit to new providers. Listening to C-Change staff talking about how iPlanit is making their work more efficient thereby giving them more time to focus on people was brilliant. An organisation like C-Change, who has a very clear person-centred approach to everything, really gives iPlanit a chance to show other providers new ways to ensure outcomes are led by people and not funding or processes.”

As you can see from the above pic, we were very keen to promote club night LATE which took place in this very venue one week later, on Tuesday 10th of April.

It was a great opportunity to talk to the public, talk about what we do at C-Change and give advice where possible.

Some of us from both C-Change & Dates-n-mates attended the Art of Living Lifestyle Show at The Arches on Tuesday the 3rd of April.

The Art of Living Lifestyle Show was an opportunity for anyone interested in the health and social care world to come down and pick up some valuable information from various stalls & learn what’s going on in Glasgow.

Event 710 Year Celebration

LATE&

All of us at C-Change & dates-n-mates are very pleased to say that the launch of club LATE was a huge success! Some 280 people joined us to launch Scotland's first truly inclusive club night, packing the dance floor from beginning to end. LATE is aimed towards people with learning disabilities though open to everyone.

Huge thanks goes to our DJ's on the night who were DJ Bowers and Capital FM DJ Garry Spence. A big thank you also to The Arches for hosting the night.

Due to the phenomenal success of LATE and overwhelming demand we are very happy to reveal that we will be holding the next one on Tuesday 7th of August. For all the latest visit our facebook fanpage: facebook.com/cchangescotland

“It was a packed night with a great atmosphere. I’ve not been to a nightclub before and this was a great experience” (Chris McCaffrey, dates-n-mates member)

“LATE completely surpassed my expectations! I knew we were doing something really different and something that could have a huge impact on the Glasgow club scene. The atmosphere was amazing and the dance-floor packed from the moment the first tune was played. The crowd was fantastic and the DJ’s played amazing sets” (Robert Gallagher, C-Change)

Scotland’s first Inclusive club night for people

with learning disabilities - open to all.

Tuesday 10th of April 2012

Page 6: C-Change Newsletter - Talk O' The Toon - May / June 2012

LATE for me was more than a club night, it was a moment. To anyone who did not know what LATE was all about, on entering the Arches on the evening of Tuesday 10th of April, coming into the main room they would have thought its a busy club night with a great atmosphere and a very enthusiastic crowd, though it was this it was also so much more than that.

It was a moment because, this was the first proper club night of its type ever held in Scotland. A genuinely inclusive club night welcoming people with learning difficulties though open to all. For four hours on Tuesday 10th the divide between ‘able’ and ‘disabled’ was all but gone, people with and without disabilities danced, drank and enjoyed themselves in a way I have never seen before.

DJ’s playing on the night were with and without a learning disability. I do not think anyone who was not already aware noticed and if they did not thats because it really did not matter. Labels only applied to the genre of the music and not to who was playing it.

For me LATE marked a fundamental shift in our society, a decade after the closure of large institutions such as Lennox Castle Hospital where male and females were purposely segregated. Where a night out for people with a learning disability meant a few cans of cola for two hours in a brightly lit community hall.

LATE

Dougie Graham(C-Change Media Coordinator)

It was a moment because 280 people with and without a learning disability had a proper night out in one of Europe’s top night clubs. Not so long ago this would have been unthinkable, now the question is why has this not happened in Scotland until now. Though as they say, better LATE than never!

Interview with DJ BowersDJ at club ‘LATE’

1 - How did club LATE go for you?

I was a bit nervous at the start though was fine once I got going, it took me a few tunes though. I was so glad it was such a great turn out! The dance floor was constantly packed and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

2 - There was a camera crew filming you at club LATE, what is that about?

A company called Matchlite have been filming me for the last for a BBC documentary. They have been filming all aspects of my life though particularly focusing on relationships. The documentary will be on TV later this year and features a number of different people with learning difficulties including myself.

3 - Would you like to play future club nights?

Definitely! I had a great night and really hope to make a career out of DJing. I am always looking for more gigs and am happy to play any event. If anyone reading is interested you can e-mail me on [email protected]

Remembering Lennox CastleOur Stories Our Lives

Colin Young & Workshop Facilitators

‘Remembering Lennox Castle’ is a chance for ex-residents to tell their stories of what life was like in the ‘Castle’ and t h e i r t r i u m p h s a n d successes since leaving.

A huge thank you once again to all the participants of our ‘Remembering Lennox Castle’ Project as well as the workshop co-ordinators from Project Ability.

We have been overwhelmed by the skills and contributions of everyone involved in this wonderful project. This has included woodwork, ceramics, drawing, painting, printing, animations as well as giving personal testimonials to camera.

The quality of work produced in these workshops has simply been outstanding. In this block we have really started to see things come together.

One of the highlights so far was seeing a sneak preview of one of the short films as part of this project. The film included animation and testimonials on the theme of life in the former hospital. This along with other content produced from this project will be available to the public via a dedicated website which will be launched later this year.

“It was really interesting hearing peoples reactions after the first showing of the film. There was a hum of discussion about it, it had really jogged peoples memories of their similar experiences” (Meredith - Project Ability Workshop facilitator)

The next block of workshops will commence on Friday 6th of July at Project Ability’s base at Trongate 103. Thereafter a further three workshops will take place on Friday 13th, Friday 20th & Friday 27th of July between 10am & 12:30pm.

If you are not already involved in the project and feel you would like to make a contribution please contact is as [email protected]

Q: I hear you do voluntary work, what does that involve?

I work on a voluntary basis for a wood recycling company called ‘Glasgow Wood Recycling’. They make furniture from wood which would otherwise go to waste. My job is to assist the workshop staff in preparing the wood to be used to make the furniture. To prepare the wood for this I remove any nails or screws then sand and varnish the wood. I also at times help collect scrap wood to take to the workshop.

Q2: How long have you been doing your job?

I have been working at ‘Glasgow Wood Recycling’ for a year and a half now. I really enjoy it as they are a good bunch of folk to work for.

Q3: What have you learned and what do you hope to gain from this work?

My aim is to be employed full time doing wood work or something similar. I am learning how to use the machines and the tools and most importantly how to do the job safely. I have picked up allot of new skills since I started.

Q4: Would you recommend this type of voluntary work to other people?

Definitely! It is has really helped my confidence and I have developed loads of new skills. I have also met loads of new people, which is also a bonus. They are always looking for more volunteers if anyone is interested. www.glasgowwoodrecycling.org.uk

Interview with Andrew Greensmith Volunteer Job

Interview with Katrina Maxwell New Support Advisor

Q1: What did you do in your previous job?

I was employed by the ‘Wise Group’ for the last eight years. I was a team leader for employment advisors, working with people who were long term unemployed to find work.

Q2: Why did you apply to work at C-Change?

I was very impressed with the values of the organisation. I found out about the position in S1 jobs and read more about the organisation on the C-Change website. On of the things I enjoyed about my last job was seeing the positive impact on peoples lives, it was very rewarding. I wanted to join an organisation where I could do the same.

Q3: What are some of your interests outside work?,’I love spending quality time with my family, going to the gym, and love ‘Jon Bon Jovi’ with a passion! I have seen him in concert at least 12 times.

Q4: If you could only visit one place in the world where would it be and why?

America! Would love to tour route 66.

Event 6

I wanted a change of direction and to experience something new. I wanted to take my previous learning and apply it to help other people in the community. C-Change seems a really good organisation and I am happy to be here.

Q3: What are some of your interests outside work?

I have a love of the outdoors including camping and climbing. I also have a dog called Jake who I love to walk. I have a motorcycle and really enjoy going trips on it out into the countryside on my time off work.

Q4: If you could only visit one place in the world where would it be and why?

I would go to Myanmar (Burma) as it has recently opened up to tourists as the political situation there has improved. My Dad grew up there so I am really fascinated to see what its like and experience the culture.

Q1: What did you do in your previous job?

I was a manager in a residential school for young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. I was also self employed as a trainer and consultant.

Q2: Why did you apply to work at C-Change?

Interview with Anita Carvalho New Service Leader

Q2: Why did you apply to work at C-Change?

C-Change appealed to me as at C-Change services are designed and tailored around people the organisation work for, where they have a real and meaningful choice over the support they receive. I don’t like tokenism and C-Change seem to offer real solutions for people. I like the fact that C-Change view the people they work for as at the centre of the organisation, getting to choose what support they need and how it is delivered.

Q3: What are some of your interests outside of work?

I love music of all types, anything from cheezy pop to thrash metal and everything in between. I love going to music gigs and also the odd club night out. I really like learning new instruments and currently am learning the Ukulele! I am really enjoy playing the drums in particular.

Q1: What did you do in your previous job?

Previously, I managed a residential service for people in the criminal justice system with addiction issues. Prior to that I worked to support adults who had issues with homelessness establish and maintain tenancies in the community. I also previously worked in Glasgow homeless services as part of the Glasgow hostel closure programme.

Q4: If you could only visit one place in the world where would it be and why?

I would probably have to choose New Orleans for the culture, the music and carnival atmosphere.

Interview with Fiona Dunwoodie New Service Leader

Page 14: C-Change Newsletter - Talk O' The Toon - May / June 2012

Q2: Why did you apply to work at C-Change?I have been a volunteer co-ordinator before and have also done voluntary work so this position seemed right for me. I also very much like the ethos of the organisation as it fits with my own so this also attracted me to the job. I enjoy new challenges and look forward to introducing a new volunteer system into the organisation.

Q3: What are your main interests outside work?I am a member of two reading groups as I really love reading, trash to classics and everything in between. I also am very passionate about travelling & acting, maybe one day I will combine both. Love walking in the countryside in my spare time, though no hills!

Q4: If you could only visit one country where would it be and why?Thats an easy one, New Zealand! My daughter lives there.

Q1: What did you do in your previous job?I delivered an accredited course called ‘Speak-easy’ to parents and carers, which gave them the information, tools & confidence to then talk to their children about growing up, relationships & other aspects of sexual health. I also trained professionals of other organisations to deliver the course within their area.

Interview with Joyce Innes Volunteer Coordinator

Q2: Why did you apply to work at C-Change?First of all it was the website, I was very impressed with the language used such as people who use the service of C-Change are described as the people we work for and not service users or clients. There was so much good information on the site and it was clear that C-Change was an organisation which has very good values. I thought this is an organisation I would really like to work for.

Q3: What are your main interests outside work?I am a keen photographer and also love art, I paint and draw in my spare time. I am very into fashion, particularly creating clothes, quilts etc. Other hobbies would be reading and running outdoors. I have been discovering my local area in Glasgow by going jogging, its a good way to explore as I am very new to the city.

Q4: If you could only visit one country where would it be and why?Ireland. because all my family are there. I was born in Belfast and have family all over Ireland both north and south.

Q1: What did you do in your previous job?In my previous job I ran a hostel for vulnerable woman aged 16 and upwards. I was a manager and my role was to make sure people got the quality of service they deserved. Th environment was very homely and I mades sure the woman were very involved in the decision making of the service.
