Vocabulary:

Traiteur - Cajun French or treater in English, healers in South Louisiana draw their practices from three ethnic groups: the Cajun/European-American, Houma/Native-American and Creole/African-American.

Faith healing - Many believe it is a gift from God and look for no other explanation. Traditional healing often involves plants and is based on centuries of trial and error.

Payment - A traiteur cannot ask for payment, but some will accept gifts that are offered.

Fact # 2

Fact #1

Cajun/ European Traiteur – Trai`teur - It would not be uncommon for a sick person to see a medical doctor, a traiteur and, also, say a novena (a Catholic prayer ritual involving saying a number of prayers for nine days) and use applicable herbs.

Fact # 3

Fact #2

Houma/Native American Traiteur – Being a traiteur is a science, just one that is not documented on paper or studied in chemistry labs. And others look for a psychological explanation saying that it works because of the healing power of the belief in the people in their traiteur.

Fact # 4Creole/African-American Traiteur - The traiteur tradition

is not a part of the "voodoo" religion or practice, even

though some of its methods are similar to the Afro-Caribbean

voodoo practices. While voodoo is a more urban tradition in South

Louisiana, traiteur is a rural tradition found in the bayou and

marsh areas

Fact #3

Fact # 5

Fact #4

Faith healing - Many believe their “healing comes from God”. The traiteur tradition of Southern Louisiana has developed through the exchange and adoption of the herbal, faith and magical traditional healing practices of these distinct cultural groups. Faith is the main element and some traiteurs are essentially "pray-ers" for the sick.

“Medicaments” – Many of the ‘healing’ powers of early traiteurs come from their apprenticing with early healers. They knew what herbs, roots, plants had special powers – no difference than today’s doctors and their use of pills and liquids – almost all made from plants.

Fact #5

Vigilantes – Sometimes the new Americans who were coming to south Louisiana did not understand the “old ways” and tried to run the traiteurs off the land or out of the area. They forced many to go to Texas and simply killed others.

Fact #6

What remedies do you know right now?

What one’s have your parent(s) used?

Did it work?

Why did it work?

Why did it NOT work?

What store bought meds do the same thing?

Where did the remedy come from?
