What is Consulting?

What exactly do consultants do?• Consultants help clients address their most complex challenges by:

– Developing executable strategies• A client needs a business strategy that not only meets their needs but is

also feasible.– Driving positive operational change

• Simply implementing change isn’t enough. A client needs help using the changes to improve their day to day operations in order to improve.

– Transferring knowledge and skills• Clients need to be self-sufficient once we finish a project.

Why do companies hire consultants?• Consultants are hired because they provide:

– Skills and knowledge outside of the clients’ competency– External objectivity when internal resources are faced with difficult decisions– Project delivery support to augment productivity of client personnel – Innovative solutions and perspectives or “outside of the box” thinking to develop

more effective solutions

Case Study

1. The Case Scenario

A national health care provider has decided to streamline its financial and supply chain processes and has chosen to implement a new application, PeopleSoft, enterprise-wide. Currently, it utilizes separate systems that vary by region as well as process. The provider realizes that the platform implementation will face various difficulties as it transitions from the old systems. The provider has retained Deloitte Consulting to conduct a gap analysis to help identify the potential risks of the implementation. What important aspects of the implementation should be identified in the gap analysis and how should they be addressed?

Key Questions to Consider:

What are the client’s requirements to achieve an effective implementation?

What risks are associated with implementing the new application?

How do you evaluate the importance of each risk?

How do you gather the necessary information for the gap analysis?
