  • Promoting Photography as a Visual Art and Contributor of Sustainable Development in Bangladesh

    This calendar features photos from the photography competition “COLORS OF BANGLADESH” which was carried out as part of the UNESCO project “Strengthening National Capacities to Develop and Promote Visual Arts (Photography) in Bangladesh: Contributing to Sustainable Development” over the course of 2019.

    The project actively supported and promoted Bangladesh’s visual arts industries, particularly its photography sector, and thereby enhanced awareness about Bangladesh’s culture sector and its contribution to the sustainable development of the country.

    Under the umbrella of the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which Bangladesh ratifi ed in 2007, as well as

    generously supported by the Korea Funds-in-Trust (KFIT), the UNESCO Offi ce in Dhaka implemented the project in close collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the National Museum of Bangladesh, the EMK Center, Prito Reza Production, and a wide range of stakeholders.

    The project created awareness among the public and the wider photography sector about the 2005 Convention, promoted photography as a visual art industry that is a part of the cultural and creative industries of Bangladesh, as well as supported emerging photographers in their work. As part of the project the UNESCO Offi ce in Dhaka organized photography capacity-building Master Classes, a photography policy round-table discussion, a photography competition, a photography exhibition, as well as public talks.

  • In 2005, the global community adopted the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions as a strategic framework and binding international agreement that ensures that artists, cultural professionals, practitioners and citizens worldwide can create, produce, disseminate and enjoy cultural goods, services and activities, including their own.

    Recognizing that culture can no longer be just a by-product of development, but rather the mainspring for sustainable development, the 2005 Convention ushers in an international framework for the governance and management of culture by:

    » Encouraging the introduction of cultural policies and measures that nurture creativity, provide access for creators to participate in domestic and international marketplaces where their artistic works/expressions can be recognized and compensated, and ensure these expressions are accessible to the public at large;

    » Recognising and optimising the overall contribution of the cultural industries to economic and social development;

    » Integrating culture into sustainable development strategies and national development policies;

    » Promoting international cooperation to facilitate the mobility of artists as well as the fl ow of cultural goods and services, especially those from the South.

    Since 2005, the Convention has been ratifi ed by 147 States Parties, including by Bangladesh in 2007.
