SOVIET SCENES: BALTERMANTS’ PHOTOGRAPHS OF WWIIAND PHOTOJOURNALISM FROM THE AUGUST COUP

MUSEUM OF ART OCT 14, 2016 – JAN 8, 2017

This exhibition presents photojournalism from two key historic moments of the former Soviet Union: WWII and the August Coup of 1991 that ended the communist regime. It features photos from the Ringling’s permanent collection. SOVIET SCENES showcases World War II through the lens of

acclaimed photographer Dmitri Baltermants, whose work functioned as state-endorsed war propaganda but also captures the emotional toll of war in terms that continue to resonate. In contrast, the August Coup is shown through a range of press images, including photographs by Shepard Sherbell, among others, that witness the dissolution of the empire and document life in countries that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. This exhibition features various styles of photojournalism and documentary as distinctive content from each time period that underscore both the climax and collapse of the Soviet era.

PATHLESS WOODSMUSEUM OF ARTOPENING NOV 4

In early November the new Keith D. and Linda L. Monda Gallery of Contemporary Art will open with a site-specific installation by the American artist Anne Patterson. Pathless Woods will be an interactive, multi-media installation in which the visitor is invited to walk through a forest of ribbons—sometimes the path is very clear and at other times it is not. The title of the installation is taken from a line of Byron’s poetry, “There is a pleasure in the pathless woods” and references that the visitor can find his or her own path through the installation with each choice determining outcome. Pathless Woods continues Patterson’s exploration into creating synesthetic environments begun with the 2013 project Graced With Light installed to great acclaim at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco.

THE RINGLING’S SKYSPACE MARKS FIFTH ANNIVERSARYCreated by James Turrell specifically for The Ringling, Joseph’s Coat is the artist’s largest skyspace installation to date. The unveiling of this work represented the Museum’s expanded commitment to contemporary art and inaugurated the Art of Our Time initiative. Skyspaces are apertures to the sky that emphasize the immediacy of pure color and light without the diversions of our frenetic everyday lives. Joseph’s Coat by James Turrell is made possible through the support of the Peter A. Vogt Family, Robert and Beverly Koski, and Dick and Betty Watt Nimtz, with special acknowledgment to the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation and to Ulla R. and Arthur F. Searing.

ASIA UNDER THE BIG TOPCIRCUS MUSEUM OCT 14, 2016 – FEB 13, 2017

Fantasies of the exotic Far East have shaped the performing and visual arts of America from the country’s inception. Traveling circuses, exotic travelers in their own right, embraced the undeniable draw of the people and cultures of Asia, including fascinating “Oriental” attractions and spectacles by the mid-19th century. Many circuses created productions around tales of the “Far East” like 101 Arabian Nights and Aladdin. The shows capitalized on every opportunity to promote the mysterious quality of Asia. Explore how stereotypes and fantasies of Asia played

to American audiences under the Big Top through lithographs printed to advertise American circuses from the last quarter of the 19th century through the first half of the 20th century.

ART AND A MOVIECHAO LECTURE HALLSATURDAYS, 1:30 PM

$5 / Free for MembersTicket required, space is limitedJoin us for this film series that explores the complex historical relationship of America and Asia through a critical examination of films that have played an integral role in American popular culture. While we’ve moved beyond simplistic depictions of stereotypical Asian character, these films indicate that it wasn’t always so and we still have work to do. Our discussions will focus on the ways in which American culture has fostered such images.

Art and a Movie is funded in part by the Toshiba International Foundation

OCT 8 Teahouse of the August Moon

This comedy-drama starring Marlon Brando and Glenn Ford is a gentle satire on America’s drive to change the world, and notably Japan, in the post-war years. Post-screening discussion led by Susan Doll PhD, Faculty, Ringling College of Art and Design, Film Historian.

Eddie Murphy plays a detective who is hired to find and protect The Golden Child, a Buddhist mystic who is believed to be the savior of mankind. Post-screening discussion led by a Ringling staff member.

DEC 3 Rising Sun

Based on Michael Crichton’s novel, this film exemplifies how the fear of other cultures can deter the process of learning to understand others and its consequences. Post-screening discussion led by Susan Doll PhD, Faculty, Ringling College of Art and Design, Film Historian.

OCT 1PERFORMING BEYOND THE CONFINES OF GOLDEN FRAMES

The Ringling’s first director, A. Everett “Chick” Austin, Jr. said “the beauty of art is not found solely in that which is imprisoned in the gold frames on gallery walls.” The Ringling’s ever-evolving Art of Performance program launches a new year with a reexamination of its mission to present works that exemplify and explore that rich diversity of ideas and forms at play in the world today. Presented by Dwight Currie, Curator of Performance.

OCT 15 AMERICAN ANIMAL WELFARE: A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVEThis talk, given by Janet Davis, Associate Professor of American Studies and History, Provost’s Teaching Fellow, University of Texas, Austin, will focus on the earliest decades of the American animal welfare movement. While modern animal protectionism is often associated with campaigns against performing animals, veganism, and celebrities declaring that they would “rather go naked” than wear fur, the movement’s roots are deeply tied to the history of religious revivalism and social reform—in other words, strands of activism not readily associated with a modern secular movement. Join us for a book signing and reception after the program.
