Call for the participants

International Voluntary Service Carbon

Offset (IVS Carbon Offset) for 2017

A carbon offset is “a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for or to offset an emission made elsewhere.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_offset). Other info.: http://www.carbonfootprint.com/carbonoffset.html, https://climatecare.org/carbon-offsetting/ We are calling for participants of our very first, historical carbon offset projects from all over the world. CO2 emission you cannot

reduce anymore by yourself

CO2 emission you will reduce by your own efforts

Why should I join IVS Carbon Offset?

< What is difference from other Carbon Offset projects? >

1. It is done by IVS NGOs with Special 3 months, voluntary workcamps of SCC (Stop Climate Change) Project. 2. Many international volunteers and local people join the work who can monitor and follow up the work. 3. You will get a certificate of a Green Volunteer and can exchange with other Green Volunteers in the world.

Who can join IVS Carbon Offset ANYBODY who will join an International Voluntary Service Project/ Workcamp between 1st May and

31st October in 2017 with using the flights are very welcomed to join us!

This project is organized by

NICE (Never-ending International workCamps Exchange), Japan

NVDA (Network for Voluntary Development in Asia)

CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service)

in cooperation with

ALLIANCE (ALLIANCE of European Voluntary Service Organisations),

GREAT (Indonesia), CYA (Cambodia) and RUCHI (India).

Step 1. Calculate

carbon emission of your

flights here.

Step 4. Register

your participation through here and also make payment to your sending NGO. The Coordinator will confirm your registration and payment by e-mail.

Step 5. Reduce

emission of your daily life and your IVS project. You can use this and also see here. It may not be easy to figure out the exact amount you will have reduced, but we will send you the guidance! This

is not a duty, but a voluntary action as you want

Step 6. Report

your actions and results of Step 5 on SCC Facebook page

with some pictures.

Step 7. Receive

a report of your Green project and a certificate of “Green Volunteer” and

enjoy exchange with other Green Volunteers by the end of December!

Step 2. Decide

the amount of reduction. 10 EUR can reduce 100 kg of your travelling emission (so, if you pay 50 Eruo, you can reduce 500 kg). The amount can be full or partial of

your emission, you can freely decide it (unit of 100 kg) * 80% of money goes to the project and 20% to Coordination.

Step 3. Choose

a Green Project to conduct your offset.

See the later pages for 4 projects in Indonesia, Cambodia, India and Japan!.

How can I join IVS Carbon Offset? - 7 steps! -

For example, the case of Bikotaro (Japan) who will join the BBAB workcamp in Germany in 1-14 Aug. is; Step 1. Calculated the emission by the return flights between Tokyo and Frankfurt - 678 kg. Step 2. Decided to reduce 300 kg of the flights emission (about half of total) by paying 30 Euro. Step 3. Chose the project in Indonesia (Pekalongan) for the Green Project (you can choose only one!) Step 4. Registered and paid 30 Euro to NICE (his sending NGO) in May and soon got a confirmation from Coordinator. Step 5. Bought local vegetables and held a candle dinner in the workcamp. More often used a bicycle in the daily life. Step 6. Posted the action with a few pictures in the end of Aug. Then, communicated with other Green volunteers. Step 7. Received a report from Coordinator about Indonesian project and a certificate around the Christmas time.

Coordinators and Contact address

We are looking forward to working with you to achieve a colorful and healthy world!

KAIZAWA Shinichiro, President of NICE (Never-ending International workCamps Exchage), Treasurer of NVDA Julie Chao, Secretariat of NVDA (Network for Voluntary Development in Asia) Victoria Lovelock, Director of CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service)

* For any ideas, questions and comments, don’t hesitate to contact to; KAIZAWA Shinichiro (Kai) [email protected]

* Deadline is 31st of August. In case it will be full (participation will reach the maximum capacity), it will be clearly mentioned in the registration site.

* At this stage, you don’t know yet how much you can reduce by your efforts in Step 5, but even if the total reduction exceeds your emission after all, it’ll be your great honor

The reduction will be conducted by the “SCC” workcamps from 4th Jul. to 25th Sep., 2017 that will prove the impact (issuing the numbers) with the Hosting NGOs.

Location Hot tropical weather (25-27 degree in the evening and 35-42 in the day time). Javanese and muslim culture. Batik garment is the biggest industry that causes serious pollution to the river. Pekalongan is located 60 km away from Semarang airport. To get to know about pekalongan please see this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pekalongan_Regency)

Background

The project will take place in Pusat Informasi Mangrove (Mangrove Information Center), Panjang Village, Pekalongan Regency. GREAT organizes «Mangrove for Java» project targeting all of over 1000 km endangers coastal areas of Java Island in cooperation with local fisher and farmer communities to answering the needs of preservation. Java coastal area is one of the directed affected by global climate change among many in the world. The project is preserving natural diversity and sea shore from the erosion because of significantly mangrove cutting in the 70’s-80s along with strong waves from the ocean. Pekalongan is the first project since 2016.

Main voluntary work

1. Planting mangrove and other trees in the beach 2. Conducting school visits and universities for environment education 3. Running a green campaign in city centre 4. Utilizing the mangrove fruits to be syrup, snacks and foods and promoting it.

Results in 2016

SCC (Global Voluntary Service to Stop Climate Change) 2016 project in 01 Aug. - 31 Oct.;

1. Planted 400 mangroves that will reduce 400 kg of 𝐂𝐎𝟐 approximately. 2. Nursed 400 seedling of mangrove trees and planted 50 pine trees. 3. Raised fund by selling syrup made by the mangrove fruits in the festival and the shop. * It was conducted by 2 volunteers from Indonesia and Cambodia with one short term workcamp.

Plan for 2017 SCC (Global Voluntary Service to Stop Climate Change) 2017 project is planned in 04 Jul. - 25 Sep. with 5 international volunteers (called now!) and local people. The target number of planting trees is 2,000 that will be defined by the amount of the fund raised by this carbon offset. There will be also a short term international workcamp here in 2-15 Aug. as well as the bilateral

workcamps with Japan in 17-23 Aug. and for 10-23 Sep.

Project 2. Cambodia (Trapaing Sangke, Kampot province)

Host NGO CYA (Cambodian Youth Action): SORN Sophat (President) e-mail

Location It is located along the sea string therefore most of the time it’s windy. The community consist of Moslim and Buddhism groups but they are living and working together in harmony. The local people are mostly fisherman, but now also able to earn some money by organizing guiding tour for the eco-tourists and providing their food and accommodation.

Background At Trapaing Sangke Fishing Community, CYA works to transform a local fishing community to an eco-tourism site by making bridges for tourist to explore the area inside mangrove forest, planting mangroves to protect the sea level rise for the villages and saving fish in the fish production season and participate with local people in collecting and planting mangroves seeds since 2012.

Now, this community is getting more popular among local tourists and also international volunteers to join our workcamp here. CYA’s volunteers plant about 1000 mangroves every year and seedling mangroves seeds about 10,000 mangroves seeds on its nursery every year.

In 2016 during the SCC project, During their stay, there was a protest from the villagers because a large corporation had destroyed and removed some mangroves near the village. It was heart-breaking for the volunteers and the local villagers, but they have never given up! In the next morning, they planted around 500 mangroves trees altogether!

Main voluntary work

1. Planting mangroves inside the protected area of the community 2. Collecting mangroves seeds and seedling in its nursery 3. Participating with local people to help them doing rice harvesting 4. Fixing path to the village as it destroyed by flood this year 2015

Project 3. India (Patta, Himachal Pradesh state)

Host NGO RUCHI (Rural Centre for Human Interests): SINGH Dharamvir (Executive Director) e-mail

Location Patta is located in Solan district and a hilly rural area where people depend on agriculture for sustenance. The land is sloppy and confined to small terraces. Land holdings are also small. Some get jobs on daily wage basis on road repairs and other construction. It is a Hindu area but they respect all religions and cultures. The largest industrial area of Baddi is 20 km away.

Background The area has serious problems of deforestation and land degradation, population pressure,

unrestricted grazing by animals and sanitation. Climatie change affects their farming and living

conditions. The resources are sufficient but the people, due to lack of education and awareness, fail

to conserve the resources.

RUCHI had 30 years experience in the community projects and the local village groups have

also been executing watershed management projects for about 5 years. The project aims to have

better environmental concerns and a greener environment with decreased carbon emission. Every

year, massive plantation is done across roadside to stabilize soil and increase green cover.

Main voluntary work

1. Planting fast growing trees with soil binding capabilities across the roadside and in RUCHI

campus. The area is prone to land slides and soil erosions.

2. Tending to fruit trees (Guava, Mango and Amla with onion and ginger) in RUCHI farm. The work

may relate to mulching, removing weeds, pruning and preparing organic compost.

Project 4. Japan (Minamata, Kumamoto prefecture)

Host NGO NICE (Never-ending International workCamps Exchange): IGUCHI Yasunori e-mail

Location

The area is famous for huge public pollution of mercury happened over 60 years ago. It is located in southern Kumamoto prefecture of Kyushu island with a beautiful semi-closed sea and mountains with several villages, where traditional culture remains strongly. There are many mandarin farms and the local onions are said to be so sweet that you can eat them like an apple!

Background

The pollution has been totally cleared away and it’s completely safe now, but the image of Minamata is still “dirty” or “dangerous” and some people are discriminated in getting jobs or finding marriage partners. The first 10 years of workcamps since 1992 made a significant impact to create a forest on the reclaimed land which was built in the process of clearing the mercury from the bay. This forest bears new lives as a symbol of revival and is an important place to pray for the victims of Minamata Disease, as well as for the world to reflect on the effects of modern industrialization.

As well as many other parts of Japan, bamboo trees, that was originally brought from China by human being, have been severely spreading and damaging the other trees and eco-system.

There is also a new project to revitalize the marine environment. There is a lot of rubbish on the beaches, but when it’s clean, there is a lot of sea food such as oysters and sea urchins. Rehabilitation of seaweed forests is taking place since a few years ago.

Main voluntary work

1. Trimming bamboo trees that can increase the whole amount to fix carbon in the forest. 2. Making bamboo charcoal from the ones cut in the Work 1 and use it for BBQ, etc. instead of oil. 3. Other work such as harvesting paper mulberry trees, citrus fruits, onions, etc., helping to run the marine environmental education projects for middle school students and ocean life investigation.

Results in 2016

SCC (Global Voluntary Service to Stop Climate Change) 2016 project in 01 Oct - 28 Oct.;

Cut 143 bamboo trees and made 277 kg of charcoal from them that reduced 1,840 kg of 𝐂𝐎𝟐 * It was conducted by 8 volunteers from Japan, Mexico and Europe.

Plan for 2017 SCC (Global Voluntary Service to Stop Climate Change) 2017 project is planned in 05 Jul. - 25 Sep. with 5 international volunteers (called now!) and local people. The target number of carbon reduction is 6,000 kg that will be defined by the amount of the fund raised by this carbon offset. There may be a few times of international weekend (very short term) workcamps in Jul.-Sep.
