CELEBRATE INDONESIA’S OLDEST LOVE POEMFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 10, 2012
JAKARTA – Fusing ancient Javanese wisdom with the magical madness of Indonesia today, Jakarta burns so brightly on the world’s cultural map that poets across the globe are hearing the call.
In that spirit, the critically acclaimed Call to Poetry has arrived for a rowdy but respectful reading of Indonesia'ʹs oldest, most beautiful love poem based on a translation from palm frond manuscripts dating to the ninth century. The Call to Poetry will also celebrate the 20th Century’s best Indonesian poetry with a line-‐‑up of the archipelago’s greatest wordsmiths, including national treasure and Tempo Magazine founder, Goenawan Mohamad.
The evening will also feature an anniversary tribute to Indonesian poet enfant terrible Chairil Anwar, in addition to a unique poetry contest regarding US President Barrack Obama’s childhood in Jakarta. The wining words will be announced at the Call to Poetry.
A sold-‐‑out event in Istanbul earlier this year with its dramatic blend of soapbox chaos and serene verse, the Call to Poetry also includes Indonesian music, with poetry read in English and Bahasa.
Sponsored by the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club, the Lontar Foundation, and Face Bar, the Call to Poetry is also a premier event at the inaugural Jakarta International Fringe Festival. “Indonesia has one of the world’s richest poetic traditions and poetry needs to be read out loud in lively places by lively people,” said Call to Poetry organizer Dan Boylan. “What beUer place than Jakarta for a call to poetry?”
