Festival honors the Guilbeau and sonnier FamiliesFestival honors the Guilbeau and sonnier FamiliesFestival honors the Guilbeau and sonnier FamiliesFestival honors the Guilbeau and sonnier Families

The Guilbeau and Sonnier families will be honored guests at the Acadian Memorial Festival and represent Acadian fami-lies arriving to colonial Louisiana over 250 years ago. The family mosaics represented in the Acadian Memorial Garden reflect their ancient beginnings.

The Guilbeau surname is French and thought to be a derivative of a Germanic personal name comprised of "Wil" meaning will or desire and "Berht" meaning bright or famous. The name is first found in the Poitou region of France where the Seigneurie of Guilbault or Guillebeau originated in 1456. Across the shield is an ordinary or "bend " which sig-nifies defense or protection and is a mark of high honor. The silver and white roundels signify generosity.

The Family

Joseph Guilbeau dit l'officier, Magdelaine Michel his wife and children, Marie (m. Michel Bernard), Charles (m. Anne Trahan), Anne (m. Charles Babineau), Rosalie (m. Paul Thibodeau), Marguerite (m. Silvain LeBlanc), Felicite (m. Silvain Broussard), Francois (m. Magdelaine Broussard ), and Jean (m. Marie Arceneau) were in the Attakapas Dis-trict by May 1765. Joseph, family patriarch and comrade of Beausoleil Broussard was buried 1 September 1765. Magdelaine Michel was deceased by 25 May 1788, the date of her son Jean's marriage contract.

Also in colonial Louisiana, along the Mississippi River in the Cabannocé District was Jean Guilbeau, son of François Guilbeau and Thérèse Boisdeque, native of Lorient, Brittany, France and a resident of Assumption Parish when he married Adélaïde Tollerest, of Nantes, France, on 6 August 1798; and Joseph Guilbeau, born ca. 1731, who married Catherine Comeau on 2 October 1767.

The Sonnier/Saunier/Saulnier surname is of ancient French origin in the Périgord region of France. It means salt extractor or salt merchant. The ordinary or "chevron' across the shield represents the roof of a house derived from the French word "chevron" meaning rafter. It signifies protection and was granted to those who partici-pated in some noble enterprise, had built churches or fortresses, or had accomplished some work requiring faithful service. The symbols are "Etoile", stars with six wavy points representing celestial goodness or a noble person; sun, ombre de soleil; base, silver water.

The Family

The Sonnier family was in the Opelousas District by late April, early May 1766 when they appear on the Spanish census of the District. Titled "Acadianos" listed is Silvano Saunier (m. Magdelaine Bourg), Joseph (m. Marie Thibodeau) and Olivier who appar-ently died a bachelor. Also on the census is Pedro Thibaudeau (m. Francoise Saunier), Joseph Cormier (m. Marguerite Saunier), Joseph Chrétien (m. Magdelaine Saunier). According to Stephen White, Francoise was Sylvain Saunier's sister and half-sister to Joseph and Olivier Saunier. Marguerite and Magdelaine were Saunier cousins.

On the River at Cabannocé was Joseph Saunier (un-named wife but children), Joseph Saunier (m. Marie Landry & Marie Thibodeau). He moved to the Attakapas District sometime before 1803. Jean Baptiste (m. Marie Anne Roy), Mar-guerite (m. Charles Forest). Marguerite (m. Guillaume Hamon), Marie (m. Antoni Boutari) and both arrived on the St. Remi in 1785. Marie Josephe (m. Claude Aucoin) arrived on the Ville d'Arcangel in 1785. Anne Saunier, Veuve Babin moved to Attakapas and married Michel Cormier.
