Ferryhill mayor, Cllr Richard Smith has been taken to task over his anti-gay and anti-Islam views by Miss Tess Tickle, a prominent and popular member of the local LGBTQI community while Ferryhill Labour councillors are calling for his resignation as town mayor.
CALLS FOR FERRYHILL MAYOR TO RESIGN OVER ANTI-GAY AND ANTI-ISLAM POSTSFERRYHILL’S LABOUR Town Councillors have said they will be seeking an Extraordinary Meeting of the Town Council where they will ask for the resig-nation of the Town Mayor, after Cllr Richard Smith was accused of posting anti-gay and anti-Islam messages on his personal Facebook page.
The issue has rocked the council and the town with popular drag artist, Miss Tess Tickle, who is from Ferryhill claiming
on her official Facebook page that: “Today is the first day in 32 years I have been ashamed to live in Ferryhill with this delight-ful human at its helm. I fight for Equality and I love my Ferryhill Family.”
Ferryhill Town Council sought to distance them-selves from the row, say-ing: “Ferryhill Town Coun-cil values the diversity of the community we serve. This Council, as a whole, is committed to equality and inclusivity. We would
like to reaffirm our com-mitment to representing and supporting the whole community, including those with protected characteristics”.
Speaking to the Chap-ter, Miss Tess Tickle said: “When the Mayor’s views were brought to my attention I was in a state of disbelief. In fact I was disgusted.
“I felt it was my duty to highlight the hate propa-ganda he was exposing people to. There were
posts of homophobia, transphobia and Islama-phobia.
“A man in a position of power with such strong views against the LGBTQI communities and other religions shook me to the core.
“I have to stand strong and proud of my views and beliefs. I would have thought that the Mayor would have to sign up to the Equality Act before
AFTER CAREFUL consid-eration, the Mayor of Fer-ryhill, Councillor Richard Smith has decided to can-cel his Coffee Morning which was scheduled to take place this Saturday, 30th June at Dean Bank & Ferryhill Literary Institute.
It is hoped this event will be rescheduled for next month.
ON FRIDAY 13th July at 7pm the Dean & Chapter Banner will be paraded around Ferryhill.
Led by the Town Band, it will be paraded from the Aged Miners Homes at Dean Bank down to the Market Place.
On Saturday 14th July, at 8am, the Mainsforth Col-liery Banner, again led by Ferryhill Town Band, will be paraded from the Sur-tees Arms Public House along to Mainsforth Com-munity Centre.
After the parade the banners will be trans-ported to Durham for the Annual Miners’ Gala.
Road closures will be in force for the duration of these parades and will be marshalled by the local police and members of Ferryhill Town Council.

that the police were their friends.
Squiresy read a book to the year one children whilst Spike held the hand of a young girl who was previously petrified of cops.
“They came in to talk to the nursery about not being afraid of the police and the police being everyone’s friend,” said Teaching Assistant, Julie Smith, who organised the visit.
“They brought two vehi-cles in to show the chil-dren; a police dog van and an unmarked car.
“Squiresy brought his
police dogs and the chil-dren all loved having a stroke of Lottie and Kaiser.
“The children then sat in the unmarked police car and played with the sirens and the blue lights.
“The Interceptors stayed for play time and came out to see the children in Key Stage 2. They joined in playing football and ten-nis and even handcuffed a teacher!
“It was a lovely morning and one the children won’t forget.”
“It wasn’t just a visit,” said Spike and Squiresy, “we also made hundreds of friends.”
WHEN WEST Cornforth Primary School asked if the police could visit the nursery children to talk to them about transport and the people who help us, lit-tle did they realise that two stars of the Police Inter-ceptors would come along to see them.
Spike (Road Policing Unit Officer) and Squiresy (Dog Handler), who both feature on the popular show, called in to see the children on Monday 25th June.
The main aim of the visit was to break down barriers, engage with the children and show them

ON WEDNESDAY, 20th June, teams from the town’s primary schools attended the Ferry-hill heat of the Durham County Maths Challenge.
They encountered dif-ferent mathematical challenges and were also required to use lateral thinking, athleticism and their artistic ability.
Throughout the day the lead was changing hands on a minute by minute basis with the tightest final results ever seen, with four points separating 4th placed Thornhill (223 points) and 1st placed Cleves Cross (227).
A sample question from one round, where the pupils were allowed
three minutes to answer each question was: “If you write down the numbers from 1 to 1000 inclusive in numerical order how many times will you write down the digit 1?”
Why not test yourself and see how long it takes you? The answer will be published in next week’s Chapter.
DURHAM PRIMARY MATHS CHALLENGE COMES TO FERRYHILL
ON FRIDAY 22nd June, Chance Drama held their first bingo and quiz night at Mainsforth Commu-nity Centre with the aim of raising funds for future productions.
The night began with bingo where one lucky lady walked away after claiming “House” twice.
The bingo was followed by a pie and peas supper thanks to Colin’s Fish Bar in Ferryhill and finished off with a trivia pub quiz produced by David Stoth-ard.
A spokesperson for the group said: “The evening’s entertainment was compered by the five-star hosts, Derek Staines and Alan Ankers.
“And the night could not

The night was a success, and enjoyed by many, with one lady saying it was a “cracking night with lovely folk!”
“Hosting an adults only night was very new to Chance Drama, and we were thrilled to see so many supportive mem-bers of our community come along,” added the spokesperson. “Many thanks to everyone involved.”

DUE TO Chilton Primary School becoming an Academy, the ‘Friends of’ group have changed their name ever so slightly and are now called Chilton Academy Friends.
The group will still carry on raising funds for the children of the school and hope everyone will keep on supporting them.
Their first fundraiser under the new name is an Hawaiian Sponsored Walk to be held on Friday 6th July, leaving school at approximately 1.30pm.
Chairperson of the Friends, Hazel Coulthard said: “The route will take us past Pentlands Park, Opal Avenue, Beverley Gardens, across the main road passing The Wheat-sheaf, the doctors and chemists, up Burns Road to Keats Road where we will turn left and walk down Ford Terrace to the

Care Home. “We will then cross over
to the library and walk down the main street to the Chapel, past John Herriots Court and back to school.
“At school the chil-dren will be treated to an Hawaiian cocktail (non alcoholic of course) and some fruit.
“We will then dance and do the limbo.
“Please come and sup-port us along the route and give us a wave and a cheer.
“We will be carrying buckets for any loose change you might want to drop in.
“The children have been given sponsor forms and have been asked to wear their brightest col-ours, hula skirts and sun-glasses for the walk.
“Lets just say you defi-nitely won’t miss us!”

THE PUPILS and staff of Cleves Cross Primary are extending an invitation to everyone to join them for their Annual Summer Fair at the school, on Thurs-day 5th July from 6pm.
There will be lots of stalls including tombola, cakes, crafts, lucky dip, sweets and the fiver chal-lenge.
“For the more adventur-ous we have a rock climb-ing wall, bouncy castle and giant slide, as well as a penalty shoot out test-ing your football skills,” said a spokesperson for the school.
“The Fire Brigade are

“Some of our budding musicians will be play-ing their guitars accom-panied by their guitar teacher.
“There are some excit-ing raffle prizes, a name draw with a £50 cash prize and the grand final of Cleves Cross Has Got Talent! will also take place on the night.
“If you’re hungry there’s our annual BBQ, choc-olate fountain and of course hot dogs and chips.
“Don’t forget the tuck shop too with all of your favourites!
“Please come along and support our fair and of course any donations for our tombola stall or raffle prizes will be very grate-fully received. We look forward to seeing you!”
being given such a prom-inent position.
“The support I have received from the people of Ferryhill, surrounding areas, other constituen-cies and political parties has been overwhelming and shows I’m certainly not the only person who is outraged by the mayor’s public posts.
“On another note it’s heart warming to see the community come together to show support and to distance Ferryhill from such views.
“So much great work has been done in our commu-nity and it’s awful to see our lovely town being tar-nished in this way by the person the council has put forward to showcase the best of Ferryhill.”
In a statement, Cllr Smith sought to sepa-rate his personal views from his position as town mayor, hinting that he would not be resigning: “Due to recent posts on Facebook, I would like to clarify my position as Town Mayor”, he said.
“As a Christian and a minister of the church, anyone regardless of faith, culture, race, gender or sexuality is welcome to my support in my role as a Pastor. If they are in need, my door is always open.
“The posts are on my personal Facebook page
and are not connected, in any way, to my role as the Town Mayor of Ferryhill, or a Councillor.
“I’ve considered the content of these posts and understand why they could be read as offen-sive, which is why I’ve deleted them.
“I won’t apologise for the conviction of my faith, but I do regret any offense or harm caused, as this was absolutely not my inten-tion. I fully support and appreciate [Tess Tickle’s] work in fundraising for the community of Ferryhill.
“I would like to think that the people of Ferryhill will appreciate the hard work that I am putting into my role as Town Mayor.
“Moving forward, we have some ambitious plans with a very diverse range of events, and I hope that with all coun-cillors working together, we can deliver these for the benefit of Ferryhill as a whole.”
Meanwhile, the Ferry-hill Labour group issued a statement on Monday saying: “We the Labour Councillors of Ferryhill Town Council want to
make it very clear that we do not condone discrim-ination in any shape or form, be it Homophobia, Gender, Age, Race or Reli-gion.
“We are seeking an extra-ordinary meeting of Ferryhill Town Council where we will ask for the resignation of the Town Mayor and his supporters with immediate effect.
“We have been accused of trying to make political gain through our actions, NOT TRUE, Ferryhill is a good decent place to live with decent hardwork-ing people, we want to see Ferryhill free of hate, which is being directed towards certain members of our community, and that is unacceptable for us.”
Reacting to the Labour group statement on her official Facebook page, Miss Tess Tickle said: “A step in the right direction to make Ferryhill equal and diverse again.”
Although some of the offending messages have been deleted, The Chapter has found that many oth-ers, dating back several years, remain online.

Dr Elizabeth Loney, Con-sultant Radiologist and Care Group Director for Clinical Specialist Ser-vices, said: “I’m delighted that our patients are now benefiting from this inno-vative technology.
“We’ve been amazed and very touched by the
generosity of local peo-ple who have donated to our Appeal. Individuals, groups, associations and local businesses have all stepped-up, recognising the huge benefits these scanners will bring.

PATIENTS AT Darlington Memorial Hospital can now benefit from the sec-ond of two new state of the art MRI scanners at County Durham and Dar-lington NHS Foundation Trust.
The scanner has been purchased in part thanks to the generosity of local people, businesses and organisations who have been donating to a fund-raising appeal.

Chairman Shaun Hillary said: “Since our takeo-ver in July 2017 we have faced so many challenges which have included inherited debt from the old board, dealing with historic licence issues, poor public opinion of the building and a building in desperate need of main-tenance and repairs.
“The entire team have worked exceptionally hard and we now find our-
selves in a position where we have paid off debts, ensured all legalities are in place, made essential repairs and maintenance works to the building and changed public percep-tion about the largest community facility in Fer-ryhill.”

TRUSTEES OF the former Ferryhill Leisure Centre, which was rebranded by its new board as the Fer-ryhill Sport and Education Centre, are gearing up to celebrate the building’s first birthday in style, fol-lowing a monumental turn around described as ‘awakening Ferryhill’s sleeping giant’.
Looking back over the first year, which can only be described as turbulent,
FERRYHILL SEC GEARING UP FOR BIRTHDAY PARTYple from the local com-munity.
Community programmes and events have more than trebled in the first year to add to the busy schedule of sports and education programmes, all of which are widely attended by local community mem-bers of all ages.
The trustees are grateful to Sainsbury’s Local, Fer-ryhill for supporting some of the events.
It’s not hard to see why the FSEC trustees and staff are excited about the first birthday celebra-tions.
Starting on Saturday 30th June, the popular Renegade Jukebox are live in the Cleves Ferry Suite at 8pm with no cover charge.
The following day, Sun-day 1st July, the entire community are encour-aged to attend the family open day, which is free entry.
On the day, visitors can expect a free children’s disco, mascot entertain-ers, table top sales, raf-fles, face painting, mini police as well as perfor-mances by the exception-ally talented and popular local groups, New Dance Generation and Chance Drama.
Large inflatables pro-vided by Party Time Inflat-able and Bounceabout and Play will also be at the event, and much more.
Shaun added: “We hope that as many families and members of the commu-nity can attend as possi-ble. We promise it will be an event not to be missed.”
