DESCRIPTION

This is a media kit I helped create at UCF. My group pitched a story about Camp Boggy Creek, a nonprofit organization that provides summer camp experiences for children battling life threatening illnesses. I personally wrote the media advisory and the feature story on Kimmy Lamborn.

Dear ONE Producers,

Childhood is often full of enjoyment and fearlessness. Unfortunately for children facing severe ailments that isn’t always

the case. Their opportunities to play and run around are often replaced with hospital visits and feeling like they don’t

have a place to fit in.

Camp Boggy Creek is a nonprofit organization that strives to provide retreats and summer camp adventures for children

with chronic or life-threatening illnesses at no cost to families. The camp provides experiences that are memorable,

exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound. The camp spans 232 acres and includes a state-of-the-art

medical facility called The Patch. The driving force of Camp Boggy Creek rests in the reliance on community

volunteerism and donations. Volunteers at Camp Boggy Creek can partake in a variety of opportunities ranging from

office administration to activity pals, and full-time employed doctors who commit their extra time providing health care

to children attending the camp. Events such as the Challenge Ride and Ride for Children are also held to raise funding for the camp.

We believe that the story of Camp Boggy Creek’s volunteer opportunities and events committed to helping families in

the Central Florida area would be a perfect fit for ONE. Your stories bring light to philanthropic organizations and

encourage others to take part in the offered volunteer opportunities. Boggy Creek is an organization driven by

volunteerism that dedicates it’s time to helping families with ill children all around the nation find a sense of relief in their complicated lives.

We’re offering Camp Boggy Creek’s story exclusively to you, so we would need to know fairly soon if you’re interested.

We can assure you that Jacqueline Boykin, manager of events and community relations, and Kimmy Lamborn, assistant

camp director, would cooperate fully with anyone you assign. We can also help you arrange interviews with families who have benefited from the opportunities provided by Camp Boggy Creek. Please let us know how we might help. Our direct

phone line is 407-756-4217.

Sincerely,

PUR 3100 Students

Jacqueline Boykin

Community Relations & Events Manager

Jacqueline Boykin worked 20 years in the corporate

world doing sales and marketing. It wasn’t until

she decided to volunteer at Camp Boggy Creek’s

weekend retreat that she realized she wanted some-

thing more from her career than just a paycheck.

Camp Boggy Creek helped Boykin realize she wanted

to have some more meaning in her career, so after

several volunteer opportunities, she was able to take

her skills from sales and marketing and become the

manager of events and community relations. Boykin

describes her job as a full time gig, but she still spends

time with her boyfriend and taking care of her dog, a stray that she rescued.

Boykin’s favorite part of working at Camp Boggy Creek is having the ability to

walk away from her desk and out to see more than 150 children whenever she chooses.

It’s a reminder of why she goes to work every day, to see lives changed and joy

given.

At Camp Boggy Creek, Boykin helps plan and implement events such as summer

camp sessions for seriously ill children, family retreat weekends, and fundraising

events such as the Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children. Boykin describes the Ride for

Children as the event she enjoys playing a part in and planning the most. She loves to

see Rossmeyer’s vision kept alive and to see giving at every level, from large sponsor-

ships to men and women who have been

taking the motorcycle ride for 19 years.

Camp Boggy Creek is an organization

that thrives on volunteers. With a

staff of only 33 year round, Boykin offers

from words of advice for anyone who would

want to volunteer at Camp Boggy Creek:

“At Camp Boggy Creek, the economy

doesn’t impact a child being diagnosed with

an illness. Volunteering will make a huge

impact on lives.”

Kimmy Lamborn

Assistant Camp Director

Kimmy Lamborn doesn’t have any children of her own.

She is a free spirited pottery enthusiast who enjoys traveling

and making the world a better place one step at a time. So it

was a surprise to family and friends when Lamborn decided

to pack up her entire life in Delaware and move to Florida to

work with sick children at Camp Boggy Creek.

She knew she had a passion for children early in life.

While attending a small college in Delaware, Lamborn volun-

teered at a flagship camp for Serious Fun Children’s Network.

There, she worked hands-on with children who suffered from

serious illnesses. When her time there was finished, they rec-

ommended she volunteer at Camp Boggy Creek – a nonprofit

organization who worked with kids in similar situations. So

on a weekend in the spring of 2001 she drove to Florida and

realized her calling. After a short time volunteering and a lot

of determination, Lamborn was appointed as the assistant camp director.

When asked why she loves being a part of Camp Boggy Creek, Lamborn responded with

“Something else happens here.” It’s a safe place for children to just come to camp and forget about

their illnesses. As the assistant director, Lamborn does everything from administrative work to

working one on one with children. Camp Boggy

Creek offers a summer camp as well as week-

end retreats at no cost to participating families.

It’s about making the world a better place.

Lamborn didn’t have a personal connection to

Camp Boggy Creek before starting there. She

just saw a population of people that needed

someone on their side. Lamborn wouldn’t

change what she is doing for the world and it all

started with a weekend volunteering. Without the

hard work of doctors donating their personal time

and strong community involvement, Camp Bog-

gy Creek couldn’t do the amazing things it does.

There will be twenty disease-specific family retreat weekends where up to 32 campers bring their families with them. These sessions allow the campers’ siblings to join in on the fun, and the opportunity for parents or guardians to gather with others who are dealing with the catastrophic situations of having a child with a seri- ous illness. Family retreat weekends provide a needed break for parents while giving them the peace of mind of knowing that their child is receiving the best of care. For seriously ill children, it’s a chance to be with other kids “just like them.”

News Release

Ride for Children to benefit Camp Boggy Creek

ORLANDO, Fla. (November 26, 2012)- Beginning Nov. 30, registration for the 19th annual Bruce

Rossmeyer Ride for Children benefiting Camp Boggy Creek will open. On Oct. 7, 2013 more than

500 motorcyclists will leave Daytona and ride to Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, FL. Within the previous

years the Rossmeyer Ride for Children has raised more than $4,325,000 for Camp Boggy Creek. The

funds allow families with children who suffer from chronic or terminal illnesses to enjoy retreats and

summer camp adventures at no cost.

“Mr. Rossmeyer was introduced to the camp before it was opened by a friend. When he had an un-

derstanding about what the camp does for families, he created an event for motorcyclists to contribute

to Boggy Creek. The motorcycle community is very philanthropic, the event just grew. It’s impressive

that the event continues to run even after Bruce Rossmeyer has passed,” says Jacqueline Boykin,

manager of events and community relations.

Riders will make the no-feet-down ride to Camp Boggy Creek and will be treated to a buffet lunch

donated by Outback Steakhouse, silent and live auctions, music and more entertainment. In addition,

this year marks the first time that registrants can raise funds too. After registration, individuals will

receive a personal fundraising webpage. All donations go directly to providing a one of a kind experi-

ence to Boggy Creek campers.

“Seeing the vision being kept alive, and witnessing every level of giving from the largest sponsors to

the motorcyclists is the most rewarding part of the ride. Every dollar earned goes right back to these

kids,” says Kimmy Lamborn, assistant camp director.
