T he challenges presented by 2020 didn’t stop us from serving families. Family Backpacking Adventures, guided by our experienced staff members, led individual

family groups on backpacking trips, using the wilderness permits we had already acquired for camp programs. We received an enthusiastic response from parents.

FAMILY BACKPACKING ADVENTURES

I am so glad we made the step to do the backpacking adventure and appreciate you letting our crew do a more extended hike. I know this was perhaps a gamble! Though it was challenging, my girls will remember this trip for a long time to come. It was so neat to hear them bragging on themselves on the car ride back to camp after finishing our 9-mile leg out. I think it’s awesome you were able to revamp your programming and offer this to families and other groups. Michelle and I are now feeling equipped to try some shorter trips on our own.

I have done a lot of work with youth over the years and can’t say enough about how well they quietly led and responded to the group dynamic. I felt at ease throughout the trip. Even though my girls couldn’t go to camp this summer it was great for them to return in this way.” AMY

R esilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity. At Camp Chief Ouray (CCO), we teach our campers resilience through programs and problem solving. The year 2020 was our time to practice resilience as a camp.

CCO faced many challenges, but we are grateful you were with us as we faced them head-on. While we did not run the traditional overnight camp in 2020, we did serve kids and families through the operation of day camp and a new Family Backpacking Adventures program. The Camp Chief Ouray Sustainability Fund helped camp financially through a summer of minimal revenue, with over 200 gifts of support.

We were able to complete fundraising to fully leverage the Stueve Family Matching Challenge for Camp Chief Ouray’s capital campaign—Enduring Tradition, Inspired Future. This enabled us to break ground on the Cabin Village in spring 2021, ensuring it is ready for campers in summer 2022.

As we prepare to welcome campers back, we are following guidelines from Child Care Licensing and Colorado Department of Health, to ensure the health and safety of everyone.

We are humbled by your continued support of YMCA of the Rockies and Camp Chief Ouray. Thank you for allowing us to continue with our mission of serving children and families through camp.

As we look at the scholarship donations we received in 2020, the donations we did not

put to use will be carried over into 2021, where we expect to see an even greater need.

The fundraising to fully leverage the Stueve Family Matching Challenge for Camp Chief Ouray’s Enduring Tradition, Inspired Future campaign is now

complete! This is cause for celebration as we work to bring camp magic to 600 more campers each summer.

• Meeting the match will enable us to:

Break ground on the Cabin Village this spring (2021) and have it ready for the 2022 camp season. The Cabin Village includes five camper cabins, a bathhouse and pavilion.

• Projects already complete include:

Infrastructure and expanded paved parking lot

Bunkhouse construction

Chief Ouray Lodge remodel – new and updated lodging for our youngest campers

The final piece to be built is the Camper Hub. The Camper Hub is a dining hall, but much more – it is the heart of camp. Everything happens here – from the service of nutritious meals, to “roaring with laughter” skits, to a rainy-day activity center. The timeline for construction is yet to be determined, and is impacted by the availability of financial resources.

In order to serve more campers sooner, and to honor existing gifts and pledges, the Board of Directors and staff will be exploring multiple funding options for the Camper Hub – including additional donor support and grants – to come alongside YMCA of the Rockies resources.
