FAN THE FLAMES OF IMPACTIn 1934, a Camp Chief Ouray brochure told parents, “Camp Chief Ouray presents to every child who attends, a splendid opportunity to develop those qualities which every child should possess and in a manner which cannot be done in any other place.” Seventy years later, while aspects of camp have changed, the essence of camp remains the same.

Research continues to show that youth who attend camp show significant growth in confidence and self-esteem, social skills, leadership and independence, and a willingness to try new things. Through Camp Chief Ouray, the YMCA of the Rockies helps facilitate these changes, providing youth with opportunities of a lifetime.

The YMCA of the Rockies remains steadfast in our commitment to youth development and it is our privilege to be a part of the time honored tradition of YMCA youth resident camping. We are honored to partner with you because together, we are truly changing lives.

My experience as a camp counselor in 1997 is a vivid memory. Everything from the majestic landscape, rustic cabins, and friendly staff, to the excited kids, told me I was given the opportunity of a lifetime. I had more fun than I thought possible that summer and made life-long friends too, but what

I learned about myself that summer as “camp counselor Justin,” was that this was my career calling. My summer at CCO launched me into a satisfying career in recreation management.
