I am honored to have been chosen as the Campaign Chairman in this, our 50th anniversary year. In recruiting my Campaign Cabinet, I was taken aback by how readily these astonishingly busy individuals were willing to give of their time and talents to volunteer for United Way and our 65 agencies. It certainly speaks to the reputation and longevity of United Way that year after year, members of our community continue to step forward when asked to help.

As you will see in this guidebook, the work and scope of what has been accomplished over the last 50 years through our agencies is extraordinary. Our campaign theme this year is “Let’s Do More.” How much more could these agencies do if given just $1000 more in their annual allocation? I don’t know the answer to that, but certainly as a Funds Distribution volunteer for many years, I believe that the need is great and that we have an opportunity to help further the noble efforts of these organizations.

I am asking for your help in raising the campaign goal this year. With your support and continued dedication, we will once again make our community a better place to live and raise our children and take a step in the path to begin our next 50 years.

The generosity of the citizens of Northeast Mississippi has had a positive impact on the lives of those in need. In recent years, United Way has touched over 100,000 lives annually. It is truly humbling to think of how many lives must have been affected over the span of 5, 10, even 25 years. Boys and Girls Club of Houston“Children are our future,” stated Craig Digmann, a mission-ary of Glenmary Home Missioners & regular volunteer at the Houston Clubhouse. “Anything we can do to encourage them to prosper & inspire them to have strong morals & values is time well spent.”

By offering extended learning opportunities & educational enrichment during non-school hours, youth improve academic performance encouraging them to graduate high school, pursue a post-secondary education & develop a lifelong love of learning. “I think it is very important to help children realize the gifts they have,” Digmann said. “At the Club, everyone is allowedtobuildconfidence&talentswhichcanbeusednow&later in life.”

Visiting the Club three days a week, Digmann also utilizes his carpentry skills by assisting with Club maintenance, upkeep, & repair of games including pool, air hockey and foosball tables.

The Autism Center of TupeloMy son Lucas came to the Autism Center of Tupelo at age 3 with limited language skills, very little eye contact & zero interest in socializing with other people. As parents, my husband Todd & I were desperate for someone to help our son. We had already searchedoverayearforautism-specifictherapiesinthearea,but there had been none & we were almost resigned to defeat.

Then Sharon Boudreaux came to Northeast Mississippi with her yearsof expertiseinthefield,&openedtheAutismCenterof Tupelo. Almost immediately, my son began gaining language skills. As his ability to communicate improved, his temper tan-trums lessened & his beautiful personality emerged. We soon realized our son had a sense of humor & was incredibly smart.

Lucas has been receiving one-on-one services every weekday for more than a year now – & what a difference! He is incredibly verbal, makes great eye contact, loves to play with other children, can carry on conversations, & has started recently to read. I credit the Autism Center of Tupelo for Lucas’s amazing progress.

Methodist Senior Services’ Sunday FundShe was loved very much at the Traceway Retirement Com-munity campus in Tupelo. For her, every new day was a new world. She remembered very little but could sing all the words of any hymn she had ever heard. She had no living relatives and didn’t have outside visitors, but it was evident that she was richly blessed from the kindness and patience of other residents and staff.

Her social security check was only $300 a month with no pension or other income. She has been living on the money from the sale of her house… but it had run out. Because of Methodist Senior Services’ benevolence fund, The Sunday Fund, this lady was able to remain in her home at Traceway until her death, two years later. Was she aware that the Sunday Fund was paying most of her rent? No! In fact, neither the residents nor the donors ever know who is blessed by the Sunday Fund, butthefulfillmentof God’sministryisaccomplishedjustthesame. It is through the generosity of so many that the Sunday Fund supports seniors in need.

Regional RehabilitationMy name is Rebecca Wright but my friends call me Becky. I’m 36 years old & live in Randolph. In June 2009 while attending an event with my fam-ily, I began to have a severe headache. I lost consciousness & then I had a grand mal seizure. My husband rushed me to Grenada Lake Medical Center where I was intubated & found to have a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Due to my critical condition, I was airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. It was there that I was diagnosed as having a brain aneurysm. My family & I were very scared not knowing the outcome of my situation. Due to lack of insurance coverage at my place of employment, I was afraid I could not afford the therapy that I so desperately needed. We were blessed to hear of the services that Regional Rehab could provide for me at no cost. In the beginning of my occupational & physical therapies,Iwasweak&hadseverebalancedifficulties.Iamnow stronger & safer due to my determination & hard work along with the dedication of my therapists. I still have a long road ahead, but I know the therapists, my friends at RRC, will work with me as long as I continue to make progress. I enjoy coming to therapy because they make me laugh & give me hope for my future. Thank you.

American Red Cross, Northeast MS ChapterAfter dropping her husband off at work, Mary Jones returned tofindherhomefullyengulfedinflames.Aftercallingthefiredepartment, Mary was able to rescue her beloved dogs, Coco & Bubbles. The home was completely destroyed. The Prentiss County Fire Department encouraged Mary and her husband Dan to call the American Red Cross. Food Depot of Tishomingo CountyThe Food Depot started a short eight years ago with a mission of feedingthehungryinTishomingoCounty.Inthefirstmonthof service, a few less than 10 boxes of food were handed out from the doors of Harmony United Methodist Church. Since then, over 68,000 boxes have been given to widowers, families with children, the elderly, & anyone who is hungry. There is NO cost to the recipients – everything is donated. . . from the boxes the food is packed in to the building that stores it, to the food itself. “If anybody ever wonders about miracles, they should come by & help us pack food boxes one Friday night be-cause this is surely one of them. We’ve been going for 8 years now with all volunteer help, no paid staff & a donated supply of food,” says Maxey South, the 2011 Board President. With the help of sometimes over 60 volunteers a month from various Tishomingo County charities, churches, Sunday school classes, Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts & others, the Food Depot continues to feed the hungry. “Just during Thanksgiving & Christmas in 2010, we packed well over 1200 boxes of food weighing about 40lbs each. This has been a countywide effort where everyone has come together to help & I certainly want to thank you for your service,” states South. We are honored & blessed to be writing to you today in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of United Way of Northeast Mississippi. Since this organization’s founding in 1961, we have volunteered in various capacities & watched as “Lee United Neighbors” has grown into a strong, longstanding, highly respected organization. When we gathered together in early 1961, (George McLean, Cliff Eason, John Osberg, John “Red” Rasberry, & Jack Reed, Sr.) it was determined that Julius Berry would serve as the first Chairman of the Board & I, “Mem” Leake, would serve as Fund Chairman. In total pledges that first year, we raised $103,446.90. We allocated those amounts to 21 agencies, with the largest parts going to the Boy Scouts, Cerebral Palsy & the American Red Cross – two of which are still member agencies today. This year, United Way of Northeast Mississippi will raise over $2 million dollars & give those moneys to 65 agencies—my how things have progressed! The two of us have seen many changes in our community over the last 50 years, but some things still remain the same. This community of good, hard-working proud citizens is still one of the most charitable you will find anywhere. We are proud to have been there with Lee United Neighbors in its infancy, & even more so today as we see the extraordinary impact that these 65 agencies are making in our community.
