The name and colours of the area’s new A-League Football team will be decided in consultation with the community in the next few months.

In December, Football Federation Australia announced that the combined United for Macarthur and South-West Sydney FC bid was successful.

Their home ground will be Campbelltown Sports Stadium when they field a side ready to play in the 2020 season.

To have your say about the name and team colours go to www.mswunited.com for details.

NEWS IN BRIEF

COMMUNITY AWARDSSome outstanding residents have been recognised at the Campbelltown City Australia Day Awards ceremony.

Other winners were:

• Young Citizen of the Year – Angelina Arora

• Sportsperson of the Year – Damita Betham

• Community Group Initiative of the Year – Dharawal Men’s Aboriginal Corporation

BILLABONG PARKLANDSWe want your input into the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands project that is planned for the corner of Moore Oxley Bypass and The Parkway in the city centre.

Plans are underway for the $18.75 million project that has been announced for Federal and State Government funding under the Western Sydney City Deal Liveability Program.

The concept for the design draws inspiration from the Dharawal National Park and includes a swimming lagoon, zero depth play area and water features connected by a meandering stream across the site beside Bradbury Oval. It will open by December 2021.

Share your thoughts and ideas with us for input into the final design on Council’s Have your Say page on the website.

CONTACT YOUR COUNCILLORSWe encourage community participation and consultation. Contact your Councillors by mobile or write to them at [email protected] or by mail to PO Box 57, Campbelltown NSW 2560.

NEWS IN BRIEF

CAMPBELLTOWN CITY COUNCIL I 3

PLANNING PROPOSALWe are seeking community feedback on a proposal to change the number of houses allowed to be built on certain properties across the Campbelltown City Council area.

Council wants to minimise the number of higher density development types being developed on land zoned Low Density Residential (R2).

You can see the proposal on Council’s website or at Council’s Civic Centre, 8.30am to 4.30pm weekdays.

Submissions close 1 April 2019 and can be made in writing to Council, PO Box 57, Campbelltown 2560. The final decision will be made by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment.

A rebooted Ingleburn Alive street party is expected to attract record crowds in March with a new format and bigger and better attractions.

Ingleburn Alive Revived will have a later start time to avoid the hottest part of the day and four distinct zones focusing on the Ultimate Kids Playground, Carnival Alley, Foodie Lane and Market Street.

The popular event that takes over Oxford Road and adjoining streets will kick-off at 3pm on Saturday 2 March and lead up to a spectacular fireworks display to conclude the event at 9pm.

Specialty market stalls of clothing, jewellery, candles, showbags and much more will line Oxford Road. There will be a full program of multicultural and entertaining acts on the central stage. Macquarie Road will become a play space with an outdoor roller skating rink. You can hire skates and safety gear for free or bring your own.

Nardoo Street will be transformed into Foodie Lane to include picnic tables and greenery with plenty of shade surrounding the area to enjoy some of the city’s most popular food trucks, as well as local restaurants. Details on Council’s website.

FEEDBACK

A big ‘thank you’ to the hundreds of people who shared their ideas

about Ingleburn at the Love Ingleburn Pop-Up Hub and via online survey held in

December last year.

We have taken on board your feedback and are developing plans to enhance Ingleburn’s town centre.

Go to Council’s website for details.

THANKS FOR YOUR IDEAS!The designs of seven parks are underway thanks to the community feedback gathered at parks across the city late last year.

We had a fantastic response to the onsite consultation sessions, online portal and social media that will now feed into the design for the upgrades at St Helens Park, Ambarvale, Ruse, Eagle Vale, the new open space precinct at Macquarie Fields and off leash dog park at Bradbury.

Everyone involved will be contacted about the final design and construction timeline.

Stay tuned on our website for the next opportunity to have your say.

Compass has a fresh new look to share our news, events and activities with you.

We are passionate about keeping our residents informed about Council initiatives and projects that could affect them and delivering it in a way that is accessible and easy to understand.

This quarterly community newsletter

has been an important part of staying in touch for almost 20 years.

Let us know what you think about the new design, the stories and any ideas you have for Compass either in writing to Council or on the ‘Have your Say’ page on our website.

Council has launched its next phase of bush regeneration to improve koala habitat at Smiths Creek Reserve in partnership with Greater Sydney Local Land Services.

The project will improve habitat of this key koala corridor in the heart of Campbelltown and enhance the Shale Sandstone Transition Forest vegetation (a Critically Endangered Ecological Community) by removing invasive woody weeds and vines.

Anyone wanting to help can join in the efforts of the Smiths Creek Bushcare group.

Details on Council’s website.

IMPROVING KOALA HABITAT

CATCH A CARPEveryone’s invited to throw in a line to help protect our local waterways by reducing the carp population as part of the Catch a Carp competition in April.

This is a great family event with free entry and a range of prizes up for grabs for mystery length, biggest carp caught, most carp caught and smallest carp caught.

The free event will be at Eagle Vale pond from 7am to 10.30am on Sunday 7 April. Find out more and pre-register online on Council’s website.

The event is the only day of the year that fishing can be conducted at the pond, and participants 18 years or over will need a fishing licence (some exclusions apply).

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS

BE PART OF THE CLEAN UP!Join us on Sunday 3 March for Clean Up Australia Day and help keep our parklands and waterways free from waste.

We’re calling on local volunteers of all ages and abilities to help clean up Fishers Ghost Creek in Bradbury, from 8am to 12pm by collecting dumped waste and rubbish from the waterway and surrounding park.

Volunteers should wear long pants, enclosed shoes and bring along a hat and drinking water. The meeting point is The Parkway in Bradbury opposite Bradbury Public School.

For more information or to register for the event, visit Council’s website.

BIOSECURITY IN THE SPOTLIGHTDid you know that weeds are destructive to our natural bushlands and our farmland? Weeds cost Australian farmers around $1.5 billion a year in control measures and a further $2.5 billion a year in lost agricultural production.

You can help by managing the plants in your garden and removing any weeds that are identified in the Biosecurity Act 2015 on Council’s website.

GET INTO THE ENVIRONMENTStay connected to the local environment through Council’s Environmental Program.

The program is a one-stop-shop for people wanting to know what environmental events and activities are happening in their community and how they can get involved. The program includes Bushcare tours and events, Macarthur Centre for Sustainability Workshops and events at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan.

The February to June program can be downloaded from Council’s website or you can collect a copy from one of our libraries or Council’s Civic Centre.

CHEMICAL CLEAN OUTGet rid of those old paints and chemicals safely at the next Household Chemical CleanOut event on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April.

The annual event is run in conjunction with the NSW Environment Protection Authority and will be held from 9am to 3.30pm at Council’s Waste Depot in Leumeah.

You can drop off items such as paint, pesticides, motor oils, batteries, gas bottles, fluorescent tubes and chemicals. Up to 20kg or 20L of any one item per household.

Remember to handle and transport your chemicals carefully. Details on Council’s website.

National Close the Gap Day – 17 March 2019 - is a day of action to pledge support and campaign for achieving Indigenous health equality by 2030.

Studies have shown that the life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is 10 to 17 years lower than that of non-Indigenous Australians.

The Close the Gap campaign recognises this and emphasises that closing the gap in early childhood development, schooling, housing and employment is the key to also closing the health gap.

WHAT ’S ON

ANNIVERSARY OF THE APPIN MASSACRE

The anniversary of the Appin Massacre on 17 April marks a sad time in Macarthur’s history when many of the Dharawal people from this area were killed in 1816.

A memorial service will be held at Cataract Dam on Sunday 14 April hosted by Winga Myamly Reconciliation Group, the Aboriginal community, supporting service providers and all interested residents are invited to

attend. The event starts at 11am and finishes at 3pm.

Council will hold a flag raising ceremony outside the front of the Campbelltown Civic Centre at 10am on Wednesday 17 April in memory of the Dharawal people. Following the flag raising a morning tea will be held.

This event is for the whole community.

SORRY DAYNational Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance held on 26 May each year.

This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.

Stolen Generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.

Join in:

• Participate in reconciliation walks or street marches

• Talk to your children’s school or pre-school about organising something to commemorate Sorry Day (flag raising, morning tea, guest speaker, colouring competition)

• Have a discussion with your family about National Sorry Day

RECONCILIATIONNational Reconciliation Week (NRW) - 27 May to 3 June - is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation.

If reconciliation lives in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, we can create a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Get involved:

• Talk to your family and friends about what reconciliation means to you

• View an Indigenous film or TV program

• Check out an Aboriginal Art exhibition

• Cook a meal using Indigenous ingredients and share with family and friends
