CAMPBELLTOWN JOGGERS NEWS ISSUE: APRIL 2018 CAMPBELLTOWN JOGGERS PAGE 1 What a month it has been!! Congratulations to last month’s handicap winner – Chris Salter. Chris has only recently increased the distance he runs and it is obviously paying off for him! Well done Chris! This weekend marks Round One of the President’s Cup – with quite a number of members away on holidays, this is a great opportunity to qualify to Round 2 or even possibly win yourself a red singlet. We kicked off with the Easter Long Weekend with the annual Soft Serve Run. Our reigning champ and world record holder came down with shingles, and with his debut marathon only weeks away, he could take no chances. This made way for a new King – Mitchell Delamotte now holds the record for the most soft serves consumed on the Soft Serve Run – NINE!! Yes nine!! Congratulations Mitchell and I know there are quite a few of us already looking forward to next year’s run as I’m sure the total will hit double figures, but if Billy is back – where will it stop?? Next we headed to Wingello for a great day organised by Rochelle and Callum. This event catered for everyone from our most adventurous trail runners, our beginner trail runners, our mountain bike riding members and our littlest members. Everyone got dirty especially Darci and Simon’s car but everyone had a ball. Thanks again to Rochelle and Callum for a great event, topped off by a great BBQ breakfast. Special thanks to Bill who came along and cooked the BBQ. Then finally a large group of members headed to Canberra for the Australian Running Festival. Thanks to Linda for organising dinner on the Saturday night once again and congratulations to all the members that got the job done. Special mention to Billy – our new marathon man. We have watched him train hard all year and he was rewarded for his efforts on Sunday. I’ve seen some fantastic results and plenty of PB’s. I’m very jealous I wasn’t there to experience it all first hand! But the fun doesn’t stop there! Upcoming we have the Camden ANZAC run – let’s get a big number there to promote our club to the local community, the Duathlon at Kentlyn, Mother’s Day Classic and SMH Half Marathon. Ted is now away for 3 months which leaves a big hole in the Club! If you are able to lend a hand in any way over this time, please don’t be shy. Thank you to Denis and Steve who will be looking after the track in Ted’s absence. Finally - Save the Date – we have a new exciting venue for our Annual Presentation Night on Saturday 24 November – stay tuned for further details!! Congratulations on achieving your first Marathon Billy, particularly after a few health setbacks. A fantastic result. How many years have you been with the club? On and off since I was 17 years old. I’ve been a fully fledged member for about four years now. What made you decide to do a Marathon? ‘Why not?’ I said to myself, and I’d wanted to tick it off the bucket list (LOL). Just one, I’d told myself, just one – but now I’m addicted! Bring on Blackmores Marathon in September. What training was involved? Not much more than I was doing besides Sunday long run, then I bumped it up every week L in time on my feet. About three quarters of the way through the lead-up to the event, I was virtually running every day except Monday, my rest day. What tactics did you use to maintain your motivation in training leading up to the event? I thought, ‘if you don’t train it’s not gonna be pretty on race day!’ I put a lot of thought into training for that last 12km, when all you want to do is survive and finish it. Describe the race conditions on the day? Blustering winds, with the wind changing directions and the skies threatening rain. The rain did stay away but there were killer head winds and tail winds as well. Were there any sections of the race that were particularly challenging or rewarding? Yes, the first 30km is a fun run, the last 12km determines who has done the training. The most rewarding aspect is seeing friends and family when you cross the finish line. Did you have a preferred training buddy? Myself for one, and John McGann for the second. The third was any CJC member willing to listen to me, but mostly I did it myself. What preparation worked for you in the final days leading up to the event? The one thing that helped me was telling myself not to worry, I’d done the training, so it would be all good. Believe in your training and the rest will follow. What advice would you give other members considering running a marathon? Embrace the training because for your first marathon you don’t want that last 12kms to eat you alive! But, first and most importantly, follow a training plan and don’t skip long runs. Pictured right: Rob congratulates Billy, CJC’s newest Marathoner!
