Art and Culture: Latin America Aug. 6-109 a.m.-noon

There’s nothing quite like a fi shing expedition. Experts and beginners never tire of this sport because there are so many good rea-sons to go fi shing. Here are three that might help you fi nally convince your family to go with you. You never know, right?

1 Spend time with people you love: Fishing trips are a great way to

strengthen ties with family or friends. Plus, everybody can go home with some great stories to tell. It’s a great way to share your passion with those you love and teach them everything you know. And if you take your chil-dren fi shing, it will be a real joy to see the expression on their faces when they land their fi rst catch.

2 Relax in nature: Forget tight schedules, traffi c

jams and daily stress; fi shing lets you relax, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. The country is a great place to recharge your batteries by getting out-doors and into the sun and fresh air.

3 The ultimate treat: Do you love to cook and eat fi sh? You won’t

fi nd anything fresher and tastier than fi sh caught the same day. And it’s even better when you catch it yourself.

Treating yourself to a fi shing trip is all about pleasure. It’s the pleasure of learning or improving your techniques, the relief of escaping your daily rou-tine and, of course, the fun of landing some prize catches—especially when it’s the biggest catch of the day.

2018 SUMMER CAMPS AND ACTIVITIES

The glories of Mother Nature may spring to mind when you think about camping, but this popular

activity is not necessarily eco-friendly, especially when you bring along all the comforts of home. If you keep the fol-lowing tips in mind for your next camp-ing trip, you can reduce your ecological footprint and enjoy nature with a clean conscience.

Limit your water consumption. Don’t run water unnecessarily in camp-ground bathrooms. Take quick showers. Wash and rinse your dishes at the same time.

Take care with your garbage. Don’t leave anything lying around, even if it’s biodegradable; a good rule of thumb is to think of the next group of campers to come along, and how they’d like to fi nd the site. Recycle whenever possible and use the on-site bins, if available. Other-wise, carry out all your garbage.

Use biodegradable or reusable products. Opt for biodegradable soap and bring reusable dishes.

Respect wildlife. Watch animals from a distance, and above all, don’t feed them. Don’t pick vegetation or throw anything into lakes or rivers. Stay on the trails to avoid trampling grasses, fl owers and seedlings, and pitch your tent at least 75 yards from lakes and rivers.

Limit the impact of campfi res. Make fi res in the fi re pits provided for this purpose. Don’t remove branches from trees, or collect dead wood to start your fi res. Don’t burn garbage, and burn all wood to ash before leaving.

Last but not least, reduce your car use as much as possible. For short trips, try cycling or walking; they’re both good for the environment and your health. After all, you’re on vacation—you’re not in a hurry.
