CANONBURY NEWS Friday 15th February 2019
It has been another busy half term of learning at Canonbury, as you can see from the year group news in this letter. We can’t possibly fit in everything that has been going on so there are a couple of key items I would like to mention: we have chosen to be a partner school with Little Angel Puppet Theatre, with a number of year groups attending shows this year, sometimes linked to their topics and otherwise for the sheer excellence of the experience.
Next half term Y5 will be taking part in a writing workshop followed by a trip to see a show. It is an exciting arrangement and we are making full use of it. For Safer Internet Day, we invited Year 5 and 6 parents to a presentation where Lawrence Anscombe, Computing Lead, shared up to date advice on the area of ‘consent’ when using the internet - consent from parents about screen time and apps/games, getting consent before sharing information or clicking ‘agree’ on pop-ups. The key message was for families to talk about their internet use and I advise all parents to use the Family Internet Plan that was handed out and can be picked up from the leaflet stand by the office. Have a great half term,
Our girls football team continued on their great season, with
even more success, by winning the Premier League Schools
Tournament. This means that they will represent Arsenal
and face the other 19 Premier League teams later this year
at Molineux Stadium, the home of Wolverhampton
Wanderers.
In other sporting news our Basketball Team picked up a
bronze medal and our Netball Team lost narrowly in their
final, but were very proud of their silver medal!
Huge congratulations to Sude, who finished 1st in the Cross
Country Competition this week and to Matilda, Aiden and
Ennio, who did fantastically well coming in 3rd!

School Council
Our School Council meet fortnightly to share and discuss
ideas on how to make our school an even better place. Last
week, the team met with a representative from Caterlink
(the company who prepare our lunches). It was decided that
next half term there will be a special School Council school
dinner, decided by the Canonbury pupils. School Councillors
have taken ideas from their peers and are currently in the
process of deciding which scrumptious options to go with –
P.S. I think pancakes are a strong contender!

Sports Report Sensational Start to 2018-19 Season
So far we’ve had the adrenaline-pumping Indoor Netball Competition. This event was jam-packed with skilful
play, screaming supporters and tactful teamwork. With just 200 points between the Houses, the Autumn Term
ended with: Agua in 3rd position on 900 points, joint second were Fuego and Aire with 1000 points and the
champions: Tierra with 1100 points.
This term we have the highly anticipated Times Table Challenge. Pupils have already shown off their skills in a
timed test, where their score have contributed as points to their house. 4 pupils per year group have been
chosen to represent their house in the X table assembly Face Off. We look forward to updating you on the
results.

This term, Year 1's topic has been 'Get Out of my
Swamp'. We have been learning about a variety of
animals, particularly ones in a swamp. We have
learned about the characteristics of the animals;
whether they are herbivores or carnivores, reptiles
or mammals and the habitats they live in. As a
result, we have made shoe box habitats for our
own swamp creatures using recycled materials.

In Year 2 we have been learning all about The Great Fire of
London. When we found out that Samuel Pepys had buried
his favourite things to protect them from the fire, we went
on a hunt around the school playground to see if we could
find them. We found his cheese and wine buried at the
bottom of the playground.
We then thought about the precious items that we might
save and why. We included some of our ideas in our very
own stories that we have published about living through The
Great Fire in 1666.

Year 3 Rainforest Visitor
In Year 3 we have been learning about rainforests.
Jumanji and his cousin Jeffbob, arrived in year 3 this
term when we started learning about an
endangered creature that relies on the rainforest for
food, shelter and protection.
Later this term we will be visiting Kew Gardens with
an immersive experience, exploring the complex
rainforest habitat and variety of rainforest plants
located in one of Kew’s famous glasshouses. In this
session children will work scientifically by observing,
taking measurements and asking questions about
rainforest habitats and exploring the relationships
between the rainforest plants, animals and people. It
will be an exciting expedition to end our topic.

Year 4 have been applying their knowledge of
electrical circuits, conductors and insulators to
create a steady-hand buzzer game.
If your wobbly hand touches the wire, the circuit
is complete and the buzzer sounds—tricky stuff!
Year 4 Electrickery!
This term both Year 5 classes had a week each at Treginnis
Farm in Pembrokshire, Wales. The children were up and at
it, before daylight and their breakfast, to feed goats, sheep,
pigs and poultry. After breakfast children set about mucking
out the donkeys, picking potatoes and other farm chores.
Other activities involved taking the farm dogs for a long
walk along the Pembrokshire Coastal Path, as well as
visiting the smallest City in Great Britain, St David’s,
exploring the Cathedral and the local sweetshop!
Year 4 holding steady!
Year 5— Muck and Magic!
Year 6 subheading
Year 6 have been learning all about Greece in their
topic 'Greece Lightning'! We have found out lots
about modern day Greece and why people love to
visit, events in history that have shaped modern
Greece and what the remaining buildings tell us
about life in Ancient greece. We even made out own
pop up temples and invented our own Gods!
We will be exploring Ancient Greece further after
half term with a workshop in school from ‘Portals to
the Past’.

Reception Classes had a hoot this term as they
immersed themselves in to the world of all things owl.
They found out a lot of factual information through our
story focus: Owl Babies; our trip to the Little Angel
Theatre to see ‘Wow, said the Owl’, followed a visit by
real owls from the Kent Owl Academy.
