TERM 1 WEEK 7 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Enrichment Program Update At Canterbury Boys High School we cater to the specific needs of boys with high potential through a targeted enrichment class. Boys identified as academically talented in a particular area need their interests and skills nurtured. Our program provides an enriched environment with stimulating challenges and opportunities for boys to maximise their academic potential. Our next Enrichment Program Test will be held on Saturday 20th March 2021. There are a few spaces left if you would like to secure your son`s future in this exciting program. 100 Word Challenge Earlier in the week, I sat down with one of our Year 7 students, Selim S to discuss how he is settling in at Canterbury Boys High School. At that meeting I set him the challenge of writing a 100 word story. The 100 word story concept or “Storyathon” has been inspired by the work of the highly acclaimed high school English teacher and university lecturer, Paul Grover. Students are challenged to write a story that is exactly 100 words. Writing microstories is fun and provides students with an opportunity to celebrate writing. They’re tiny narratives challenging students to tighten their language, experiment with words and focus their message. Please enjoy Selim`s 100 word story. He wondered where all the important plays were going to be held now. People queued up every day but the plays were often long and seats were far too expensive his father had said. He had always desired to see one of the great plays like Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet. It didn’t matter now anyway he told himself. Most likely, he would never get to see any of the amazing plays. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT

I visited our Homework Centre yesterday afternoon and was impressed by what I saw. While it was a small group of twelve, students ranged from Year 7 to Year 12. Some were researching for assignments, others were completing Accelerated Reader quizzes, another couple of students were working with the teacher to review classwork and prepare for upcoming exams. Attendance at the Homework Centre, which runs two afternoons a week in our Library, is voluntary. It was reaffirming to see these boys making great use of the opportunities we

offer, showing dedication and commitment to their learning.

Our College students should already have developed their study and homework routine. To be best prepared for the Preliminary Course Final Exams which begin in two weeks, a general guide would be about two hours homework and revision each night, dependent on factors such as which subjects are being studied. I’m sure they are looking at their Assessment Schedule Booklet so they can manage their time well.

College students focussed on their note-taking skills last Wednesday during their ‘College Support’ lesson. We have revamped the College Support program this year to include a regular focus on building skills for academic success, as well as incorporating health and career-related topics to help prepare students for life beyond school.

We’ve introduced two academic programs this term, to continue to build reading and numeracy skills in the junior years. Mr Peter Gilchrist is running small group tuition sessions, called ‘Reading Circles’ and ‘Numeracy Circles’ that focus on high challenge activities to extend student learning, for example inferential comprehension and multi-modal texts. We’ve examined a wide range of data to select students for these programs in order to support them to maximise their potential. I’m sure they will rise to the challenge.

On Friday 19 March we’ll be focussing intensively on social justice, combining the National Day of Action Against Bullying with Harmony Day. Year 7 will ‘team-build’ through a variety of workshops throughout the day, strengthening the foundations set up at Camp at the beginning of term. The whole school will experience the wonderful cultural diversity of CBHS through music and dance performances. We’ll share photos on our Facebook page. We’re encouraging boys to wear their national dress or something orange (which is the Harmony Day colour) so the photos are bound to be colourful.

Year 7 have almost completed their first term as part of the CBHS family. We’re looking forward to meeting our Year 7 parents and carers at our Meet the Teacher Afternoon Tea on Tuesday 23 March from 4:00 to 5:30pm. An interim progress report will be available, as well as curriculum information and a drama performance. It’s a great opportunity to put faces to names, over a cup of coffee and a biscuit.

Thank you, parents, for ensuring your son arrives at school in time for lessons – our first bell goes at 8:35 am.

Being COVID safe - An important reminder Students must not attend school if they are unwell, even with the mildness of symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of taste, and loss of smell. Students need to be symptom free and a negative COVID-19 test result must be received and sighted by the school prior to their return to school. Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test are not permitted to return to school for a 10 day period and they must be symptom free for at least 3 days prior to their return. Students who have seasonal allergic rhinitis or another condition that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms are still required to get tested for COVID-19 and return a negative test result. Where their symptoms continue beyond 10 days, students should provide documentation from their GP confirming their symptoms are typical for their condition. Isolated incidents of sneezing or coughing may not indicate that a student is suffering from an illness.

Where a student is unwell, arrangements will be made to send them home.

Our school is very excited to be part of the exciting Future Proofing study that is being run by the Black Dog Institute and the University of New South Wales. This is a five year study with 200 schools and up to

10 000 Year 8 students that will:

• Help us to understand why young people develop mental health problems in adolescence – and how to prevent them

• Deliver evidence based mental health mobile phone apps to increase young people’s mental well-being

International Women’s Day 2021

On Monday 8 March, Kyle Macks, School Co-Captain, acknowledged International Women’s Day with a thoughtful presentation at our whole school assembly.

International Women’s Day is today – it’s about achieving an equal future for women.

IWD is a day to recognise how far we’ve come towards gender equality, and also how far we have left to go.

Back in 1911, only eight countries allowed women to vote, equal pay for equal work was unheard of – if women were allowed to work at all.

Now, in Australia on average, men are paid about 15% more than women – that’s called the gender pay gap. And there is still gender discrimination and harassment, and domestic violence, which is why at CBHS we are active participants in White Ribbon Day.

Today I’d like you think about a woman you admire and who inspires you.

FOCUS ON A FACULTY Support Unit - Beautifying our Space.

The support unit students have been working hard to create a space where they feel like they can best engage with their work. Through this process they have been developing their self-determination skills.

Self-Determination is a process by which a person controls their own life. This is being taught through authentic learning tasks and goal setting lessons.

Resources sourced from the University of Kansas’ Self-Determination Learning Model of Instruction.

For the first task the students have been researching about AstroTurf, estimating, and measuring the area required, completing the calculations, contacting companies for quotes, and working within a budget.

14s Buckley Shield Knock Out Competition As Captain and Vice-Captain of the Buckley Shield team, on behalf of the team, we are very grateful for the opportunity to play in the knock-out competition and against Cronulla High School.

Although some boys have never played competition Rugby League before, we came together like brothers on the field working together as a team, and came off the field united with our heads high. It was a close game; however, we lost the game and did get the outcome we had hoped for.

We would like to thank our Principal, Mr Dummett for his support in trying to find a field for us to play on, and Mr Tsoletas, member of our P&C for reaching out to the Canterbury Bulldogs Club to ask if they could assist. We feel very lucky that the Club gave us approval to play on the Peter Moore Field. We would also like to thank the Canterbury Bulldogs officials for coming out to the field to meet with Mr Dummett.

A huge thank you to Ms Giameos and Mr McKinley for running training sessions after school in the lead up to the game, and to parents for coming out to watch the game.

Congratulations to Cronulla High school for the win and we wish them all the best in the future.

Inter-school Cricket knock-out at Ell’s Park

Canterbury Boys High School made a fine start to the inter-school cricket season with an outstanding win against Kingsgrove High School. Both sides played with fairness and respect, however, the other team was no match for our talented CBHS bowlers, batters and fielders. CBHS won with an outstanding result of 53 runs, all out for 12!

Congratulatons to Rehaab, Rehan, Aayan, Muhammad, Yahiya, Raadee, Salman, Bilal, Haris, Shariq, Omair, Tabrez, Kodor, Hamza and a big thanks to Mr Miller and Ms Danilatos who travelled with and supervised the boys on the day.
