For the past several years, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has required districts and schools to communicate Annual Education Reports (AERs) to parents and the community before the start of the school year. However, this year, new assessment and account-ability processes in the state of Michigan delayed the timeline for AERs.

Based on the revised timeline provided by MDE, the 2015-2016 Annual Education Reports for Coldwater Community Schools are now available on the district’s website at www.coldwaterschools.org. Parents and com-munity members are encouraged to review the District Annual Report and the individual schools’ Annual Education Reports online. Paper copies of the District and School Annual Reports are also available in each school’s main office.

Legg Middle School 6th grade students were busy in March practicing for the 2016 Branch County Science Olympiad. Science Olympiad is a national nonprofit organization devoted to increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for achievement in science.

The Branch County Elementary Science Olympiad is a third through sixth grade team tour-nament where students compete in fun, science-related events and activities throughout the day. Olympic-style medals are awarded to first through third place winners and all partici-pants receive a certificate of participation. The 2016 tournament was held on March 29.

Legg students practiced their events four to five times prior to competing as they met with their coaches after school. This would not have been possible without the help of the many LMS staff volunteer coaches. This year’s LMS Science Olympiad coaching staff included; Mr. Knowles, Ms. Bender, Mrs. Holben, Mrs. VanZee, Mrs. Sobek, Mr. Renshaw, Mrs. Fleming, Ms. Welch, Mrs. Wilkinson, Mr. Rossow, Mrs. Wuori, and Mrs. Wilson. Thank you, coaches!

March is Reading Month!March came in like a lion, and Lakeland kicked off March is Reading Month by roaring into the 50s with a Rock n’ Roll into Reading theme. Classes designed guitars that were placed on a huge musical staff in the building. Students who turned in reading logs helped their class guitar icon to climb the musical staff, showing how much they were reading during the month. Lakeland students also got a chance to show off their rocker style as many dressed up for the 50s Rock and Roll theme day. Classrooms also participated in a book swap, decorated bookmarks, and got a chance to ‘Do the Twist’ at a Rock and Roll into Reading assem-bly. To bring the month to a close, students participated in a read-a-thon, proving that they know how to ROCK OUT TO READING!

Twenty Ukuleles Purchased Thanks to Generous Donors

Marguerite Grupke, Elementary Music teacher at Coldwater Community Schools, has started teaching uku-lele lessons in her music classes to students at Jefferson Elementary. The purchase of the 20 ukuleles was made possible through gen-erous donations by a variety of donors including teachers and community members.

On March 6th, 13 Coldwater High School exchange students were afforded the opportunity to see a Detroit Pistons basketball game at the Palace of Auburn Hills through the generosity of Branch County United Way. Many of the stu-dents had a dream of watching an NBA game while studying in the USA this school year, and the United Way stepped up in a big way, providing tickets to make this dream a reality. A huge thank you to Judy Krzeminski and the United Way for their con-tinued support of all our Coldwater Community Schools students and families!

Senior, Brendan Spangler, was chosen as the 2015-16 Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizens Award recipient for Coldwater High School.

The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This award recog-nizes and rewards individuals who possess good citizenship qualities of dependability, service, lead-ership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers, because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.

This program is only open to high school seniors whose schools are ac-credited by their state board of education. Only one student per year may be honored as a school’s DAR Good Citizen. United States citizenship is not required.

Once a student is chosen as the DAR Good Citizen, the student is invited to participate in the scholarship portion of the program by submitting a personal statement and an essay.

Government can be learned in many ways. One way is to read textbooks about what others have done, and another is to take that theoretical knowledge and apply it in an actual government setting.

The State YMCA Youth in Government (YIG) program provides students with a unique opportunity to learn how to be civically engaged by acting as state leg-islators, lobbyists, lawyers and members of the press corps. The program teaches leadership skills, civic engagement, and the values of democracy. The students simulate all phases and positions of the functional state government and are challenged with many of the issues our working legislators must face in their elected offices.

In March, 44 students representing CHS, along with over 600 students statewide, participated in the annual spring YIG con-ference.

CHS students did an outstanding job demonstrating civic knowledge and lead-ership skills and earned many of the top awards. Award winners included Ethan Aerts, who was elected to Speaker of the House, Jayden Kelley as Lt. Governor, Adam Clemens as Senior Lobbyist. Naomi Blansit received Top Lobbyist, and Jared Jackson was awarded Top National Issues delegate. Our Mock Trial Team came back with the “Spirit of the Law” award with both Dillon Gagnon and Evan Henry repre-senting the Supreme Court Justices.
