Dear Friends,

Spring is the season for expressing our gratitude. This special donor issue of Windows reminds me that we have much to be thankful for.

Carmel Public Library provides our community, and the greater population beyond, with collections, expertise, technology and services that span generations – babies to grandparents, students to job seekers, teachers to parents, travelers to hobbyists, readers to naturalists. Building on a foundation of library excellence, we have been busy this year defining new library roles and key partnerships in achieving this vision. We value our traditions as well as embrace change and ready ourselves for the technology and information evolution.

As President of the Carmel Public Library Foundation, I’ve been honored over the past two years to work with a group of exceptional Board Directors, and many professionals and volunteers, who have dedicated themselves to providing and funding impactful library services that ensure service success, grow resources, and increase library efficiency.

Building partnerships has been key to accomplishing this goal. We have created a spirited team-based culture that I’m proud to be part of: our Teacher & Parent Lecture Series with the schools, Community Nights with the Library in Carpenter Hall, our annual benefit at the

There are so many ways to give to the Library. Please know that every single gift you give makes a huge difference. Carmel Public Library grows and thrives because of you.

Thank you for your friendship. It’s been an honor serving as President.

STERLING CIRCLE PLANNED GIVING Leave a Legacy at the Library

Tomorrow’s results are created by today’s dreamers. Many people dream of a way to help support the library and ensure its growth and sustainability in the future.  Some find that a good way to accomplish this is to designate Carmel Public Library Foundation as the beneficiary of a gift from their estate plan or will. These gifts provide a tax deduction and

have a tremendous impact on our ability to keep the library open, relevant and thriving. If you would like information, please contact Amy Donohue at 831-624-2811. Joining the Sterling Circle is easy, and the amount and conditions of your gift remain confidential.

Grateful Farewells to Outgoing Board DirectorsAs another successful fundraising year draws to a close, the Board of Directors offers a heart-felt goodbye to the following outgoing members.  As Bill and Marilyn pass their batons to new incoming Board Directors, we express our sincere appreciation for all their hard work.  We look forward to their continued involvement.

Bill Scearce:  Bill has been instrumental in his role on the Finance and Major Gifts Committees.  Bringing a wealth of business and international finance expertise to the foundation, he has

been an important asset over the years.  His kind-hearted and collaborative spirit will be fondly remembered.  Thank you Bill and Gail.

Marilyn Kren:  Marilyn’s contributions have been many and special.  Her grace and generosity are shared through the art of her letter writing, a rare and treasured craft, essential to the work of successful fundraisers.

Her special event experience and personal touch will be missed.  Thank you Marilyn and Hal.

Special thanks to Ben Heinrich who, while remaining on the Board, will pass the helm of Presidency to Heather Brebaugh next year.  Ben’s steady hand and thoughtful leadership have been

gifts to the library foundation over the past two years.   His presidency has been marked by qualities of integrity, intelligence and purpose.  A trustworthy leader, Ben leaves a mark on the library for future generations.

CARMEL PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATIONP.O. Box 2042Carmel, CA 93921-2042Carmel Public Library Foundation (CPLF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization

The witty dialogue of best-selling author, Mary Roach, and Science Friday host, Ira Flatow, served up an evening of weird and hilarious science stories that kept the sold-out crowd in stitches at the Annual Fundraiser on April 7th. Mary’s books,

which include titles such as Stiff: The Curious Life of Cadavers and Packing for Mars: The Curious Life of Science in the Void, fly off the shelves of the Carmel Public Library and entertain audiences of all ages. Science Friday, which is aired by our partner sponsor, 90.3 KAZU/NPR, attracts more than 2 million weekly listeners and has a loyal following in the Carmel area.

A highlight of the evening featured local students who were invited on stage to ask questions of Mary and Ira. This year’s event attracted a growing audience from secondary and postsecondary schools as well as

our largest community outreach to date.

We are deeply appreciative to those who contributed to the success of the event, including Mary Roach, Ira Flatow, the KAZU team and radio supporters, River House Books, Sunset Center staff, our participating vineyards, and the dedicated board of directors who worked on the event. We are especially grateful to our generous sponsors and benefactors, as well as our amazing community for their support of this event and the Carmel Public Library Foundation.
