Biographical NoteCarol Ely Harper (1904-2000) was born in Missouri and came to Washington as a child. She attendedWhitman College in Walla Walla and later pursued a master's degree in theater from the University ofWashington. She lived in the same house in Seattle for more than 50 years. Harper was a poet, editor,actress, artist, pianist, composer, and botanist specializing in the iris. She was an acquaintance of MarkTobey, and owned paintings by Tobey and other Northwest artists, which were destroyed when herhouse burned in 2000. Harper founded Experiment Press and the poetry journal Experiment, which sheedited. She was also associated with various contemporary literary personalities.
