The XX – Coexist

The XX – Angels The album coexist features the song Angels. Haunting, whispered vocals married with the ambient, chilled melody allow for the perfect, heartbreaking love song. Each verse tells the story, initially the overwhelming feelings seem unreal, unbelievable. It is the beginning of this relationship and the artist seems smitten. The second verse refers to the relationship aspect of getting to know someone however this is conveyed as very one sided and so the idea of heartbreak is introduced. “Like dreaming of angels and leaving without them” implies that the whole romance is a fantasy. In the final verse feelings are finally recognised by both. The music seems to fade as the final verse begins to emphasise the lyrics. The captivating story reflects that of the majority of songs featured on this album.

Light reflects from your shadowIt is more than I thought could existYou move through the roomLike breathing was easyIf someone believed me

They would beAs in love with you as I am

And everydayI'm learning about youThe things that no one else seesAnd the end comes too soonLike dreaming of angelsAnd leaving without them

And with words unspokenA silent devotionI know you know what I meanAnd the end is unknownBut I think I'm readyAs long as you're with me

BeingAs in love with you as I am

Mise en Scene

The album artwork for Coexist is very simple yet dramatic. The way the X is exhibited as the only colourful feature on the artwork could indicate that without The xx your music will lack colour. In addition the calming colours reflect the calming effect the music has on the listener, the album fills a void that not many of us knew existed. A distinct opposite of the traditional pop song, The music is almost an intimate whisper best understood in the vicinity of your bed in the most intimate hours.

The album name is inspired by the artwork which depicts a puddle of water and oil in a cross.

Romy Madley Croft:“You see a puddle of petrol on the floor — it can look sort of beautiful with the colours that come through it. I looked it up on Google or whatever, and it said oil and water don't mix, they peacefully coexist? And that's what it is when you see those colours. I liked that idea: those two things coming together to make something more beautiful than they are. And I liked the idea of us three coming together; only when the three of us are together, that's when it exists.”
