Enhancing ERP Performance by the Power of Cloud 3

AbstractManufacturing excellence hinges on agility. For manufacturers, the ability to anticipate and adapt to constant changes in the market landscape would help them to derive a competitive edge. This case study focuses on how one of the leading food processors in Asia leverages the combined power of SAP S/4HANA and HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) to drive agility.

In Manufacturing, the Only Constant Is Change Established in a few decades ago, Company A is a leading food processor in Asia. In 2018, the firm was ranked among the Fortune Global 500. As one the leading agribusiness groups, Company A has hundreds of plants and a broad distribution network covering India, China, Indonesia and dozens of other foreign markets.

SAP S/4HANA proves to be a viable solution to help our Client achieve an agile manufacturing process. Previously, our Client, one of the biggest food processing firms in the world, was using SAP ECC to monitor their operations. Unfortunately, by 2025, support for the platform will cease. With five years left to the deadline, there seems to be an urgent rush to move to the next-generation business suite – SAP S/4HANA. Subsequently, our Client needed to make the upgrade sooner than later given the volatile nature of the manufacturing sector. Plus, the new technology has a myriad of new features and capabilities.

SAP ECC, an on-premise ERP system, can no longer keep up with the increasing complexity and demands of the sector. On the other hand, cloud infrastructure, as an enabler of responsive and adaptable business processes, has emerged as a must-have technology to improve the Client’s ability to react to constantly changing customer and market demands. This drives the need for deploying SAP HEC.

The Client’s current system has 10 different SAP instances that form particular SAP systems for its wide range of manufacturing plants across several countries. In addition, the large number of customized objects (>1,000) and integration systems (>10) within the Client’s system made the integration project extremely complex. Performing the migration on their own will place a pressure on the firm’s IT staff, who might lack the time and effort to take care of their SAP systems . Accordingly, the Client decided to consult a professional external partner with a strong technical competence. FPT was eventually chosen due to hands-on experience in SAP.

Transitioning from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA

A Step-by-Step ApproachOur Client expected to enjoy a prompt delivery with excellent end-to-end services. Given the tight deadline, we established two teams to share the workload. The Functional & Test team, were responsible for data migration of functional modules (FI-CO, MM, SD, PP, QM, PS, PM) and execution of integration tests. The Technical team took charge of system development tasks.

The project had two main phases.

The PlanThe first phase lasted for 4 months and entailed moving from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA. Our team undertook a multi-step program to help the Client migrate data from the previous system to SAP S/4HANA.

Firstly, our team scanned over 1,000 objects to evaluate the differences between ECC and S/4HANA. Based on the information gathered, we performed custom-code preparation. When moving to SAP S/4HANA, there are a large number of custom codes that need adjusting. Some custom codes in the ECC model might not perform as expected within S/4HANA. Therefore, our teams had to modify and redefine some of the Client’s custom codes to match S/4HANA.

Besides, as the ECC’s blueprint was no longer appropriate for the new platform, our team was well aware of the need to change the new blueprint that better tailor for some new S/4HANA-based process of FI, CO, MM, SD modules. The last step involves lifecycle testing. User Acceptance Testing (UAT) was conducted to ensure a smooth performance of all functionalities. After every necessary test took place, the transitioning project had officially been commercialized.

As the migration to S/4HANA had been fruitful, the next natural step would be deploying SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC). SAP HEC is conducive to reducing the hassle and time of running SAP S/4HANA. Therefore, the second phase of the project addressed the cloud migration part of the business project and had a 3-month duration. The goal of this phase was to move from on-premise servers to SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, a private cloud hosting service for SAP HANA.

The ResultOur team managed to perform a smooth migration to SAP S/4HANA. Existing features perform properly. Thanks to readiness checking and go-live support, the migration did not impact on the daily operations of the platform.

The new SAP S/4HANA solution helped our client to run their business processes smoothly and enjoy the latest features of SAP S/4HANA.
