Heel is a pharmaceutical company that has specialized in the development and production of pharmaceuticals made of natural ingredients. It is considered a pioneer in the area of scientifi c research of natural medicine. Open-mindedness and curiosity defi ne its way of thinking and working. Its thirst for knowledge and spirit of research go back to its founding father, Dr. Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg, and drive the company to this day.Around the world, 1400 people work for Heel. Over 900 employees work at the company headquarters in Baden-Baden.The internationally active company does business in more than 50 countries across the world and distributes around two thirds of its pharmaceuticals outside of Germany.

Some of its best-known products are: Traumeel®, Euphorbium comp., Zeel®, Neurexan®, Vertigoheel®, Engystol®, Viburcol®, Spascupreel®.As part of two IT modernization projects, fi rst the non-SAP solution for material control fl ow systems using SAP EWM/MFS and then the proprietary warehouse management using SAP EWM were replaced and consolidated in one SAP EWM system. Environment subject to validation

The processes and software solutions in operatio-nal logistics in the pharmaceutical industry must be implemented according to the GMP (good manu-facturing practice) principle to guarantee that only goods classifi ed as unobjectionable are delivered to end customers.

The professional quality management at Aberle Software has developed over the course of a large number of projects in the pharmaceutical industry. Using this quality management system, Aberle Soft-ware was able to help Heel successfully validate the system

The task

Heel operates a two-fl oor logistics center at its com-pany headquarters in Baden-Baden with the following areas:• Incoming goods • Manually operated high-rack warehouse• Automated high-rack warehouse• Pick-by-light system• Packaging and shipping area• Connection to production

IIn the past, separate IT systems that were connected to one another via interfaces were used for warehouse management and material control fl ow systems. The division of the task in connection with interfaces and the long-term provision of secure operation proved to be diffi cult for Heel. Additionally, the non-SAP solutions did not suitable for Heel’s long-term, strategic orientation toward SAP..

The solution

SAP EWM and SAP EWM/MFS were optimally adjusted to the processes, needs, and logistic situation at Heel.In a fi rst project in 2012, the material fl ow control systems of the automatic high-rack warehouse were switched to SAP EWM/MFS during operation. This called for a special interface solution to allow SAP EWM/MFS to operate under the old non-SAP warehouse management. In 2016, warehouse management was switched to SAP EWM – also during operation. In addition to the auto-mated high-rack warehouse with workplace functions integrated into the conveyor technology process, now the pick-by-light system and the mobile end devices in the manual warehouse areas are also controlled directly from within SAP EWM. The external quality assurance system from Heel is integrated into the functions in question via SAP QIE.
