Problem: At one customer’s site, mill liners were scheduled for replacement during a planned shutdown. Following the implementation of MillMapper’s TM reline forecasting in the previous year, it was discovered that wear rates had accelerated on the plates and several liner segments would have worn to failure limits by the time the shutdown was due to take place. Had the excessive wear gone unde- tected, a subsequent unscheduled stoppage would have occurred at considerable extra cost and with severe disruption to the site. Solution: Due to MillMapper’s TM advanced forecasting capability, the scan carried out in the previous year accurately predicted the necessity for relines for several liners in the months leading up to the shut- down. This allowed plenty of time to organize a scheduled reline shutdown. The forecasts shown in the table below illustrate the wear curve drawn using data from the sched- uled shutdown scan. It shows that shell liners had worn down to their reline limit at that time and would have failed before the original planned shutdown with untold cost to the customer and safety risk to personnel. Outcome: Using MillMapper’s TM reliable forecasting enabled well organized, preventative maintenance and saved this mill operator considerable expense and disruption to their process.
